Sharinel

This is just a dull chapter imo, 2 dimensional villain cackling in the background and the plot was advanced a grand total of nowhere. Maybe it will read better as part of the overall book but as a standalone chapter I have no idea why this was written

Yuvraj Baheti

Awesome chapter! Very interested to see what exactly Abel wants from this training session.

Warlord

Jesus she’s ruthless

Brandon King

This chick is ruthless. Great effort by Rei though. He really should be doing combat training with the second years at least once a week by now.

Warlord

Bro what villain Abel isn’t an antagonist

Nicolaus Fountain

I'm just waiting for Rei to push back. Tell Abel you know what you take Shido and give it to somebody else cause I quit! We know that Abel will back down because she has already shown that when Aria's dad threatened to resign.

chris kizziah

Now let’s see everyone level up again so Abel can be justified in her demands

Liy

So...Rei fighting match after match for less than an hour in this chapter seems pretty mild compared to the 16 hours vs Lennon at the end of book one. Rei had the motivation to push himself to his limit then, but that need to win is over, and he has dialed back that effort. Abel IS motivated to get him stronger, and for good reason. I don't see anything wrong with her pushing here given what she knows. I would imagine if Rei and the others knew the stakes, they would endure without complaint.

Baconater

Whoo wee, my first words at the end of that revised chapter were NOT kind. Mini-Dolores Umbridge is about to catch some hands

Liy

Only issue I had was her disregarding the doc's orders, but she doesn't seem to be pushing Viv at all, at least.

Jonah

Great Chapter, I'm excited for the spec upgrades after 2v1 and THEN 1v1 with Kalus, not to mention hit him!!!! THANKS

Voror

There were some breaks during the time with Lennon though but overall I agree with the point. What I'm curious about is what the eventual gains will be from this if there are any. If it's just one uptick or two in a stat that might be a bit disappointing and I don't think that is what Abel is looking for either.

Voror

Best guess is Abel is trying to see if she can force either evolutions or skill upgrades by pushing as hard as possible. In part probably based on those theories they had behind why Breaker developed. A part of me would be curious to see Rei vs the rest of Firesong.

Brandon King

Bryce, can we get confirmation or denial that Logan activated overclock voicelessly??🙏🏾🙏🏾

Nomad

So many fights in a row that even Bryce lost count!

Dan

Very good chapter! Appears Abel is attempting to cause an evolution in Rei. What awesome changes are you planning for Reidon Ward? Can it be externals?!

Bill Hilliard

Pretty sure at this point Abel is trying to force an evolution or new ability. Rei has put himself through worse (him and the Lasher for 12 straight hours) so he can take it. Im hoping that his device (with the help of the mind) is smart enough to hold back until she is gone so she backs off some. I mean I get why shes pushing so hard, with them losing the war and all but jeeze give poor Firesong a break lady! 😂

Bill Hilliard

I caught that as well! Either that or Rei was so distracted he didnt hear it called out.

Bill Hilliard

It is fun to hear that Rei is now able to at least give a tiny challenge to the S ranks now even with them “dumbing” it down to his level it is impressive! Im interested to see how much Shido is going to affect others.

Liy

Rei vs Lennon went for 17 matches without even resetting the field, and that was after a full day of intense "warmup" (just finished that book so it's fresh in my head lol). Then they went another hour before he stopped to let the CAD update. No breaks mentioned for hours of back to back matches. Abel tells him to fight 12 2v1 matches, and then fight an S ranker, and he's excited for it. She is testing his limits. I think the breaks are mainly for psychological rest since getting ripped into over and over is mentally taxing, but Rei doesn't have that issue compared to the average first year. He gets a breather while the field resets, and that's all he needs to go again. I do hope we get some good upgrades for all this, but they've been at it for half an hour so far.

Matt O'Connor

Fantastic revisions. I much prefer Abel in this version of the chapter. She comes across far less cartoon villain and much more General seeking to push them to their limits. Giving breaks to the others, listening to the suggestions, even if not about Viv. I still despise her, but her characterisation in this is more nuanced and three dimensional.

Matt O'Connor

Also, technically speaking, but shouldn't Aria get the next seed as the fourth member of their training group, followed by Logan who Rei has been linked, if not friendly, with and fought more often with/against than Chancery? I'd laugh if out of nowhere Grant was the one with the powerup despite them looking at her.

saynt

they had been working on voiceless command, i had assumed they had all mastered it until this chapter

ProVVoke

Its better, but Abel's character is still boring as presented. She's just another in a long line of people who are willing to destroy in the name of their goals, its just that she sees her goal as the survival of humanity. I understand that's supposed to present a conflict to the reader, but she's boring because shes completely at peace with it and hasn't been shown to have any inner struggles or legal limitations with her ability to sacrifice anyone and anything to reach her goal.

Hope

Another fantastic chapter, Abel is another evil character, I would like to see her taken down a bit. And pushing Rei like this is either pushing for an upgrade or something less pleasant

Sam

But remember that Lennon called Rei a monster and stated that this was not normal for a first year.

Misty

I would love to see Rei handing Abel her ass in the future

Garret Bazurto

I enjoyed the revisions to the chapter. I didn’t like Abel before and the additions make me not like her even more. It was a nice change to see Rei vs Kalus and hold his own even though Kalus was slowing things down for him. I can’t wait for the next chapter to see if there is something Abel was pushing for in particular. But also hoping we might get to see the Rei and Sarah conversation.

Crouky19

Pretty pleased with this Abel's version : Sol want him to push forward even with health risks. This Abel was exactly Firesong's fear

Gabe Yohn

Im honestly a bit... I don't want to say confused, but this chapter makes me think... Abel is obvious trying something and I do believe she wants the best for Rei & Firesong. She is a general after all. Could an incompetent person be in that much power I doubt it. Story wise I'm excited but it does seem like they are making a bigger issue out of this.

ProVVoke

What do you mean she wants what's best for Rei and Firesong after all? She's not some idealized parental figure, she's a general. Her entire job is to spend lives and materiel as efficiently as possible to advance the interests and goals of the state.

Dee

Abel just really sucks, the end does not justify the means. There's no real care for Rei or Firesong, just what use she can she get out of them. Really cannot wait until she gets her well deserved comeuppance. Awesome read 📚 Thanks for sharing!

Jonah

I'm waiting for the 3v1 to actually give rei some difficulty

Dungeonborn

Best in a sense of excellence with their CADs and fighting in general. Abel probably sees then only as cadets/soldiers to be moulded into the best weapons for the ISCM she can.

Rasmus Salling

I do find the attempt to provoke Kamiya a bit off character as compared to what has been presented previously, eg. the cold but non-malicious character from the hospital "encounter". So far my impression was that she was just purely focused on the survival of the ISC, with basically all means being left on the table. Eg. An objective "ends justify the means" character. Why the jab at Kamiya? Unless there is some history or purpose? That said, it's not like her character is completely fleshed out yet, so perhaps she is just less calculating than I've picked up on so far.

Johnny Spriggs

When will the next chapter be available

Dirty Dibbler

She wants to create the best weapon the military can use in a war they were already expecting to lose within the next few years. My guess is that she intends to push Rei until he either shows her a glimmer of hope that he can be the difference in the war effort OR confirm that he’s not the answer so she can focus the ISCMs resources on finding it. Based on the positive comment at the end of the chapter, I think she’s seeing the glimmer of

Dirty Dibbler

Perspective check. Do you think Rei and Firesong would be so apprehensive to this style of training if they knew what Abel knows? From Abel’s POV, humanity is facing an extinction level event within 5 years. An event that that they expect to lose. Now here comes an 18 year old kid who, for some reason, is offering a glimmer of hope that humanity might just be able to survive this. (still not sure how one person could make a difference, maybe the Arcon is a hive mind with a single controlling entity that Rei could temporal step to and destroy?) If Rei knew that and was able to handle that weight on his shoulders, do you think he’d be doing anything but training? Anything but getting prepared for the fight to save humanity?

Dirty Dibbler

Seems too soon, he just had an evolution to get Breaker mode, pretty sure he hasn’t even ranked up once. I’d bet she’s trying to push him to see if he really can be the hope of humanity in the war against the Arcon

Dirty Dibbler

This book is going to end with a fight against Sidorov

Dan

That could be it also. Just Breaker mode is a up close and personal power, he lacks the long range immediate striking power. Temporal step gives him a huge advantage, but it is a charged ability. Seems like when Rei is pushed to the breaking point he evolves in the story. Just my humble opinion. Bryce is driving, I’m just trying to guess his route so to speak. I also feel that family issues and unknown family issues are taking away some of Rei’s focus, possibly. Time to meet Sarah, and get past that anxiety.

Dan

I believe I mentioned that some chapters back. Totally agree with you on that point

Dan

Agreed! Information and truth can be the greatest motivator

ProVVoke

That feels somewhat morally equivalent to the people who ask silly questions like, "Would you call a black person the N-word to stop a nuclear bomb from exploding in a city?" Also, even if it is true that humanity appears to be doomed at this moment in the story, what makes Abel's decisions on who and what to sacrifice and what to push for the correct ones? By your logic, Dent could assassinate Abel because she's actually fought on the front lines, is an A-type herself, and thinks she knows how to train Rei better than Abel.

Dirty Dibbler

That’s absurd, both your silly moral question and your asinine comparison. Abel isn’t killing anyone or trying to train Rei, instead she’s trying to see if he has it in him to save the world. if anything it’s a extrapolated trolley problem where she’s choosing to let the train hit Rei or Billions of people, but again, she’s not trying to kill him, she’s testing him

PapaJaypes

Loved this chappy. Thanks Bryce! Abel reminds me of Harrison Ford's character in Enders Game. I remember him saying things like, "My job isn't to be friends. My job is to produce the best soldiers in the history of the world" and "this is battle school, not nursery school" I suspect that much like Jasper, we're meant to really dislike the character at first, then grow to respect her and empathise with the impossible leadership position she's in, then grow to even like/love her. For me, I kinda like her. And yeah, as other commenters have pointed out, obviously what she's looking for is a change/upgrade in his specs to happen so she can witness it first hand.

Fleetpanda

To me, she's coming across less as ruthless and more reckless and just kinda... an ass. A 'leader' disregarding the wellbeing of her charges to this extent is ridiculous. This situation in particular is WAY over the line, as a medical officer was on hand and voiced concerns. Legally in the moment she's in a grey area as she can technically override medical 'advice', and they can't disobey her orders. That ends when disregarding the medical advice actually gets people hurt physically or mentally. Maltreatment of subordinates is a crime in the military, and disregarding Medical to this extent is really toeing that line.

Andrew Foster

Right? I thought they all were able to mental calls and rei was able to do mental activations for type shift. Thought that was what they had started doing at the ends of their private practice sessions.

ProVVoke

Not my silly moral question, its something racists tend to ask as a kinda gotcha question. And sure, the situation in the book is an extrapolated trolley problem. But again, I ask, is Abel the right person to make the decisions? Just because she is at the "controls" of the trolley, doesn't mean she's qualified or capable. And maybe she only sees a classic trolley problem, but what if she hasn't noticed a third option like throwing the switch at precisely the right time to derail the oncoming trolley? And we know that she isn't the most qualified because there's an AGI in the story, the thing all the tech bros of today argue will literally become god the instant its created. Really I'm arguing from a more anarchist perspective that questions the legitimacy of hierarchical power and it's inherent assumptions about the proletariat's tendency towards panic.

M.Vo.

Great stuff. She may have reason to want to spur growth, but she revels in it.

Sugoi

I’m not sure what’s the plan for Abel in this story you know? She really just feels she’s this book’s villain because without her there isn’t one. Reese was snubbed last book giving Firesong and their associates the breathing room they’d need to grow and be 1st year cadets. Something Abel signed off on because it was hampering Rei. Right now she just feels flat. She’s spoke little, disregarded everything the specialist suggested for Viv, Rei and Aria. Ignored Von Bor and Chancery/Logan. Is she pushing for push back? Is she looking to see how far she can get away until Rei snaps himself? If so, it still has me asking why? If she wanted to have Rei tested mentally in such a way allowing Reese’s dismissal was pointless because he’d be the proper tool for it and was doing a hell of a good job. If anything does come out of this choice in Abel’s actions hopefully it makes sense I guess. I do wonder though, when exactly will other schools be informed of the 1st year Systems and beyond tournaments? I’m pretty sure there’s less than or around 3 months until Summer? I just find it odd for this to be happening so late into book 3. With roughly 10 chapters left if Bryce sticks to what he did for book 1 and 2. That leaves Rei’s last one or two parameter tests, announcement for the 1st year’s tournament, Sarah and Rei having their planned one on one. Aria, Logan and Chancery getting their respective upgrades/shards, arguably something new again for Rei? Idk it’s a lot I feel book 3 should have that wouldn’t fit greatly in 10 chapters. Ending book 3 towards us moving into the tournaments is what I’ve been expecting since the end of book 2 so long ago. Now it seems it may be a little into book 4 until we actually hit the tournaments. Thanks for the extra pages nonetheless. See ya next chapter.

Victor Summerhill

Love the chapter, the update just made me a little more upset with Abel. But I’m still stomped at why the announcement for globals hasn’t been released, and I’m only saying this because if Abel wants to see just how strong Rei and the team is (collectively) wouldn’t globals and beyond do just that. Not to mention she would be able to be present not cause a rift, and get answers. Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part but Abel being there just seems out of place considering no one knows what could be coming besides Rei, Aria, and Guest.

Thunderbug

I’m with you on this. Not sure how long he wants this one to be. But it feels like little has happened (compared to book 1&2)

Sugoi

I believe we can consider Valera in the know how group. She has the MIND in her ear after all, but yeah it is odd no information has been shared even among the schools as an early heads up compared to the masses so the cadets can be prepared. What’s the point in have Rei be pushed so hard in this “off season” of sorts if his competition weren’t preparing for tournaments after their first year Sectionals? Arguably Firesong needed the head start so that everyone outside of Aria and Rei can catch up to high tiered 1st years on Earth or other planets/systems. For wanting more “spears” over individual powerful “nukes” on the frontlines, Abel and the ISC are holding themselves back by not having every cadet train their hearts out.

Sugoi

Yeah we were held back greatly in the early stages of book 3 because of Bryce not knowing how he wanted Edgewalker to turn out. I believe it wasn’t until we were in the 20s or 30s until Viv was back in action and able to use the ability. That’s 1/3 - 2/4 of the book dedicated to Viv, and we still have no idea in what’s up with the MIND talking to her and “protecting Dent”. Outside of Rei having his single conversation with Hiroto, I don’t recall much of the first half of book 3. This book has it’s moments of giving me what book 1 did, but overall it seems we’re going to be ending this book on a sour note.

Heather Herren

Has Aria got a new ability lately? I think she is the only one I haven’t noticed getting abilities

Jason

I agree thr pacing isn't great with this book. However, I did see online how he is planning to combine chapters, and if you compare word count instead of chapters the book is actually only 50 percent to 66 percent of the way done. So we're probably going to get more than 10 more chapters. I still don't think we will get to any tournaments in book 3. I think it's pretty much going to have all the members of firesong getting shard status, and rei getting another huge upgrade but I'm thinking this time it will eother be zhido becoming sentient or him gaining access to the mind like dent has. Then it's going to end right before the systems tournament. But I agree they need to let the rest of the students know about the other tournaments. Even though it's for the whole system, Astra 3 has the best schools in the system and galens being the best school on Astra 3, it's pretty safe to say galens will have multiple teams competing so they should let the cadets know soon so they can start preparing. As of now all the students think they are just doing the group stuff still so they can stay ready for the following year. They might be training differently if they knew there was a tournament coming up in 2 or 3 months.

Lou Collobert

No I have to disagree in one respect. There is no grey area in any first nation military (which are the only ones that I have enough knowledge to speak on.) Unless combat conditions are currently involved, no one has the authority to overrule medical officers opinion on one of their patients under their care. That rule goes all the way up to the Commander in Chief, which Abel currently is not. Tell you the truth I am a little unsure what Abel's position is besides in the high command.

Lou Collobert

Agreed this is so far off character for Abel I am having to wonder, if he is fishing for villains for the story and trying to make Characters fit a new mold

Max V

The announcement for globals is a good shout. I also dislike that Abel straight up lied at the beginning of her introduction as well about, "I'm not here to create any sort of disruption" line. She removed 2 of the people helping train and get the most out of Firesong's training, not to mention taking over the training session more or less by forcing Rei and the team to go back to back to back sparring, which isn't normal, as far as we can tell from von Bor's reaction. Also, what about her insistence that she was in approval for testing if focused training can force certain evolutions she signed off on when speaking to Colonel Guest a few chapters prior? She's definitely seems to be suffering from a lack of exact purpose from my point of view. I would love to be proven incorrect.

Fleetpanda

The distinction is between medical advice and a medical order. A senior officer can ‘technically’ override medical advice, however it usually leads to a sh*tstorm, as it opens the door to formal complaints. They cannot override medical orders. That’s why Viv, who has a set written restriction isn’t being pushed as hard. Realistically this would never ever happen to a cadet in training. If a medic says stop on a training field, then instructors stop. It’s *technically* allowed for an officer to over ride it -no laws being broken. But it’s beyond stupid to do it just for training, and can risk being taken out of command if things go wrong.

Jonah

Please post a chapter this weekend!!!!!

Rus Chiasson

Has Rei talked to his sister yet? I’m waiting to jump back into the chapters until that happens

Brandon King

I'm not sure how the conversation with Sarah is going to go, but I really hope it ends with something like this.. -Voice only slightly quivering, Sarah looked at her little brother and asked, "So what, now?" Rei, swallowing the lump in his own throat, smiled down at his sister. HIS sister. "Wanna spar?" Do your thing, Bryce. That's just my daydream bro. 🥲

Scott

you bring up a good point - i wonder how the rest of the team now stacks up to the rest of the first years, Galens and beyond? based on their training and trainers they should all be taking on two at a time of the rest of galens, and Rei 3 maybe 4!

Scott

was sort of (no, was seriously) hoping for a chapter this weekend! its been a ... bit of a bummer weekend. Got lots of friends in Minneapolis and they have been unhappy!

Aerich Rea

Bryan, do you have plans on getting the rest of Firesong to catch up to Reidon or will he be a one man team eliminating other squads in future SCT's?

Aerich Rea

Sorry I meant Bryce!

Liy

In book 1, Rei, Catcher, Viv, and Aria all got pretend slaughtered by Lennon over and over for the whole session (couple hours?) without a break because they forgot to ask for one. This chapter has been only HALF an hour of back to back matches (as stated by Jasper, and each match only lasts a couple minutes). Grant and Cashe maybe aren't used to it, but it's not that extreme for this team. Viv is the only one I'd be worried about right now, but she really does need to catch up, and she isn't Abel's focus at this point. Abel is not a fun person and will hopefully get in trouble for sending the doc away, but I don't see anything evil about her yet. Sidorov is the biggest villain in book 2 at this point. He's brainwashed or blackmailed the whole year two class, it seems. And I don't think we've seen the last of Dirk Reese.
