51 is a very short chapter, but it's critical for the impact I'm going for with the character in question. However, a lot has been added to the interactions at the end of 50 that should be reread before moving on to 51!

Enjoy!

Its one week too early for such a special Valentines gift Bryce

Tim Murray

Oh you sneaky bastard. You’re trying to turn the tide. You won’t make me like Abel. I refuse.

Warlord

Ah so she was hoping they’d stand up to her for Rei. She still a bitch though

Daniel Harpin

Short, but very important chapter. Gives a glimpse into the mind of Abel.

Tom

That's... a terrifying thought

Gabe Yohn

SEE I KNEW IT! There is a very calculating MIND behind this whole ordeal! Abel knows something about the enemy that I don't think even Dent knows about. She is doing her job and we don't know all the information yet. Hate her or not, I like Abel's character and the role she plays. It's a chess board, and she has a role in the war.

Nicolaus Fountain

I am starting to not like the MIND as much as Abel.

Gama

Phenomenal additions! I'm physically feeling the anger of the situation. Great writing.

Dungeonborn

The MIND is a machine. It can only operate on logic and data. Abel is a human. Even if she’s psychopathic she should have a better understanding of emotions and empathy. The MIND also probably has different directives it has to abide by so it probably didn’t really have too much room to operate. Though I agree that Abel is apparently not just a bitch for the sake of being a bitch. Rather she seems/ acts like a bitch because she’s playing 4-dimensional chess while firesong is getting the hang of checkers.

Tim Kilgore

This may sound strange, but I really like that ending of chapter 51.

Jonah

Amazing chapter, hoping for spec upgrades though after so many matches with Kalus and Jetwing!!!

kirbydabear

Dang it, Bryce. Why you gotta make Abel seem halfway rational. Why can't she be some half-crazed megalomaniac hellbent on abusing the fragile power she wields. But noooo her actions are actual logical and potentially even make her whole character redeemable. I mean, I still don't like her but it's harder to keep the passion lol.

Michael Wuestenberg

Excellent. Most excellent. Emphasizing the tension between the "very senior" and the actual trainers is an accurate representation of reality. They both seem to have the same goals but different ways to achieve them. Also, kudos to the "deus ex machina" for keeping MIND in the dark & having to reason it out. (After all, it isn't a human, is it?)

Garret Bazurto

I am really glad we got a weekend chapter, I have been really looking forward to more. The chapter 50 changes were great combined with the short chapter 51. I really felt the anger and frustration. Then you hit us with the Abel perspective and I am like no, don’t make her understandable and possibly redeemable! I like hating her. Can’t wait to see what comes next.

Hope

Hey Bryce another fantastic chapter, really like the revisions to 50 and 51 definitely fit better now within the framework of the story. I like knowing that the mind texts are always in red and I am not totally sure that the machine is totally on the side of the humans. Able being a cautious and calculating person fits and checking the staff checks. Still she's not a good person.

Nicholaus

Goddamnit, I do not want to like General Abel. I'm going to feel so betrayed if you make me like her😂

Sugoi

So she was pushing for push back. I was wrong on it coming from Rei but nonetheless. I’m also at a loss here. I don’t remember if Abel is the main General or there’s some form of Co-Generals who are at the head of the ISC, but Abel using herself (the peak in command) as the test to see if Rei can be safe from herself by his trainers and Galen’s staff makes little sense. She’s already organized the attack on Rei and the threat of transfer so the institute and Rei would be forced to push harder. Was that all in an attempt to see if she’d be stopped, or some other motive? This book has honestly ruined Abel’s character from book 1 and 2 for me. She doesn’t seem to be the calculating General aiming to save humanity in unfavorable ways anymore. She’s acting as a kid would to see what they can and can’t get away with. This all just has me at a loss at how she even rose to her position.

Sam

I don't think anything will make me like her.

Dan

Appears the MiND is using ABEL as a gauge of human emotional reasoning in chapter 51. I hope chapter 52 will reveal some strength upgrades as least, and the upcoming meeting with Sarah. Announcements to the upcoming systems should be coming and Galen’s gearing up all teams for those? So much ahead and to look forward too! Great writing Bryce, can’t wait for next chapter!

Sam

Her actions aren't actually logical though. She really expects his trainers (both Kamiya's and Galens') to stand against her when they are all in the military and have to follow the rank of command? She's insisting that they all risk court martial just to prove a point only to herself.

Brandon King

Loved it. Able is a cold piece...I respect it tho. Those are the people that get the hard things done in the military... Now...there is NO WAY the next chapter doesn't start with: "Processing combat information......"

Daniel Bellick

This has nothing to really do with the chapter, which had an awesome ending (great job!), but will shido have like an overall base stat breakdown? His stats change so drastically between all the different modes, they barely seem to make sense anymore if he levels anything.

Justin Stephens

Really awesome pair of chapters. The implications of the second one, particularly where the MIND is saying he doesn't understand the logic behind her testing Ward makes it obvious that she's been behind the sus things that have happed to Ward and almost certainly the hack also (though if the hack wasn't her, it will be damn interesting to find out who). Also there are too many perceptive people in that room to not catch on to what Abel was doing. Jasper almost certainly knew what was going on. This is the first time I've read a revision of chapter 50, and I suspected what she was doing about 2/3s of the way through the chapter. I would absolutely love to see another short chapter where Maddison is knocking sense into a raging Guest and helping him put the pieces together.

Scott

Well, if nothing else, I bet Rei ranks up in endurance!

Robert Gibson

When will we see the results of the extended combat? How far will the effects reach?

gratch42

Weird thought: How does CADless F-cognition Abel assess the fights? Slow-mo replays via NOED? Some pad replay? Or like most things she’s only interested in the final result and will slowmo review recordings later?

Jared Plunkett

Once again I love how you write Abel. She is so easy to dislike but at the same time you can understand her. She has the weight of humanity on her shoulders and is desperate for any inkling of a solution. She has had to send soldiers to their deaths for decades. And now her best weapon is in the form of young people who she has to be willing to do the same.

Dee

Still really don't care for Abel 🫠 great chapters anyway..

Lyn Shirley

I doubt General Abel cares who likes her. She has a difficult job and she probably is aware of other generals at Central who are not her friends. The switch from villain to protector was brilliant. Very slick 180° turn.

Misty

Abel is okay I guess but I still think Rei should get to pummel her sometime soon. Also there's no way Rei doesn't get a CAD level upgrade to B7 after 14 matches against two C-rankers and 8 matches against S-rankers. The next chapter should start with that, in fact. Also can anyone suggest why is Bryce trying to make us like Abel now? And who the hell is actually the villain???

Richard Jackway

A thought just occurred to me - I had always presumed that 'Growth' rarely moved for a user because it was tied to a User's ability or willingness to learn. Because of that, I always presumed that Rei's dedication to learning & his ability to learn (not just mentally but physically as well) were what resulted in him being assigned S growth...

Zane

People’s comments on Able are really annoying, Rey is in a military, he his to be commanded and sacrificed if need, it bugs the crap out of me the military leadership is so inconsistent

JustOneEmperor

Yeah I don't buy the "I'm just seeing if he is protected enough" nonsense. It may be personal bias. But after the entire S-Rank stabbing at sectionals and the torn lung, she is still literally torturing him. But besides that, I think it is interesting how the mind seems to be directly talking to Abel after mentioning to Dent that it is also fed up of her, yet let's her make choices directly against what it wants. Kinda makes me rethink how much influence it actually posesses

Liam Zay

The actual villian is the alien race (its been a long time and I forgot what they are called) that humanity is at war with. There's certainly shitty humans around, but the aliens are a threat as to humanity as a whole

Brandon King

I'm thinking that firesong Will probably have earned a couple day off after this c*** show. Maybe a certain someone will have time to go talk to his sister!

Esch

Man, imagine the jump Shido is going to do after what that bitch Abel just pulled? Our boy Rei is gonna jump a few ranks.

Jake Creates

Fantastic as always, but 51 should really be the end of 50.

Polyist's Apostle

I think it's more the fact that there is an expected level of human decency from the top brass, even if it's bare bones. I don't disagree with you; at his level, Rei is just a number on a spreadsheet to someone of Abel's level, even if he is a very shiny number with lots of sparkles. But Abel should at least be expected to have a certain level of human decency and respect for her soldiers, and that lack is what makes her an even greater villain to most people.

Sam

The Archons, those are the villains that humanity started a war with.

Christian Kalemkiewicz

Everyone is focused on the people, but I think the MIND is the real mastermind here. Remember… it needs variables. So it’s using whatever (or whoever) it can; even Abel and Dent. I think that’s why we see some shifts in their personas. The MIND seems to be trying a variety of different approaches. Valera is the safe protector, and Abel is the hard anvil. Those two may think they are doing what they think is best, but the MIND is the one secretly influencing those decisions. We can now see it’s obviously talking to both of them, and I wouldn’t put it past the MIND to try different things to see what Shido responds best to. It also seems like it likes to play dumb. You can’t tell me the most powerful AI in the world can’t figure out what Abel’s doing. Just guessing here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out Abel was somehow gaslighted into doing this, thinking it was all her idea, when really it was the MIND dropping certain hints at certain times. To me, the MIND is playing everyone like puppets to get the desired result.

Brandon King

Yeah...don't get what the need was to have that section be it's own chapter... would have been a fine end to 50🤷🏿‍♂️

Misty

I mean the human villain, not the aliens.

Scott

So if Abel came back to the staff and trainers and said “look, I did that to test you - to make sure you would protect our priceless assets”. Then she could instantly be (mostly) forgiven I think. And maybe even somewhat appreciated

Adam Verdeyen

I think this book especially, but the series in general have an important theme that ties into these chapters perfectly. Does the end justify the means? Obviously that subjective and the real question is how far are you willing to go to save the human race? Rei and his team should hate Able, but if his team is the best chance they have to at least stop the archons cold then I would say that training session is justified. He will grow from that experience and it is small shit compared to being attacked by S rank projections, I feel like that is a level of torture no military should be ok with. In this case what she did was push him to exhation, America does the same thing for longer periods to our special forces.

Daniel Posey

Ok seriously that's ALMOST a redeeming quality for the General.

Colby Golightly

I’m getting confused with the pacing of the book. Book 1 and 2 moved through the semester and were easier to grasp the end goals, but for book 3, I haven’t quite seen an end goal. I mean, are they even still 1st years? How long has passed since Viv has gotten out of the hospital? Who is the enemy here? I understand the book isn’t finish, I just can’t tell if the story is progressing at all. I absolutely love books 1 and 2 and cannot wait to see more fights against other schools. Or possibly some insights into the Archons.

Zwil

She’s CADless????

Mistfate

I’d argue it makes me hate her even more

Daniel Posey

I'd say that it shows just how ruthless she is. But ultimately she's on the same page as Dent but interpreting the information that she has gotten differently so she is moving forward in a different direction. At least she isn't completely in the dark and only doing it for some sadistic reason.

gratch42

Think she was described in the hospital scene as a powerful presence even without having a CAD. CADs are expensive and for people on the front line. This military probably has lots of CADless people for support, logistics, strategy, command that don’t require a CAD.

Richard Jackway

Pretty sure that is Sidorov. Also time for a villian or two at Intersystems - particularly as they'll probably get Rei to fight in the 2 / 3 year fights (likely literally no one should come near him in first year)

Rando Calrissian

I still say she deserves a fragging, the grenade being a dummy is up for negotiation

Brandon King

However, that would remove all of the leverage of the threat to ship. Rei and Aria to Sol. She still wants them pushing and taking the upcoming first year intersystems seriously..

Raymond Lenihan

I think it's quite obvious they are still first years, the book is building towards the System and Intersystem SCTs that are, for the first time ever, including first year brackets. The whole reason behind Rei finally accepting Kamiya's offer of sponsorship was because Aria's dad came in and told Rei and the colonel if Firesong didn't win the whole of the first year tournament Rei (and Aria too maybe?) would be transferred out of Galen's to Sol. There's not really a specific antagonist, its Rei and the team fighting against the threat of being broken up and also against Abel in a general sense, especially lately

Misty

Okay that's possible

Andrew

Ya but when in the year is it. First semester and second was book 1 book 2 was the third are they really still in the forth? If so when is this tournament? In the summer?
