Going to be doing these occasional  "Let's Chat About" sections where I'm going to be looking for feedback (see?? I said I ask for some!! lol) on specific topics.

Today, I want to talk about Logan Grant, and his relationship with Viv.

As many of you can tell, I have set myself to try and turn Grant from someone everyone hated to someone everyone comes to understand and (hopefully) slowly grows to like. He's never going to be a perfect character or person, but his flaws will be tempered by the people he surrounds himself by, and reasonings for his actions and personality provided eventually.

I don't want to do this all at once, of course. It's supposed to be a steady, climbing change with the promise of redemption. My goal is to use his defeat by Rei, his past, and (especially) his relationship with Viv, to peel away at people's opinion of Grant.

So my question is:

On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you feel Logan Grant's growth is being handled so far, especially with respect to his relationship with Viv?

Clarifying comments are obviously appreciated!

Personally, I think you’ve set it up really well in the first book. I’m a sucker for redemption arcs like grant’s. One thing I’ve really liked was chapters from grant’s perspective

Adam

Definitely a 10 after this last chapter. Loving the effort Grant is making at being a better person. There's a visible struggle.

Devin Jaros

10!!!! Grant was the most interesting character to me from book 1 and I’m loving his begrudging emotional/relational growth so far. I do still need a bit more back story to make his relationship with Viv feel more “real”, but we are only halfway-ish through book 2 so I assume that clarity is coming!

Hxrley Danielle

I think it’s going great, but we are liking and forgiving him too quickly in my opinion. Maybe a few weeks (theoretically speaking) of him being a bit more stand-offish and it’ll be perfect. Bc I actually like him already, I just think he’s weird. Maybe an intervention with someone like Dent will through everyone through a loop lol

Shreyam Kumar

On the Grant side, I feel it’s a great job! I feel a bit more of seeing Viv feel proud of him, or just get closer to him after he’s done something great (like defend Rei) and maybe Grant’s impulse to look at Viv to take strength would be something that would work well

Rajeev Roy

I like the idea of what's happening with Grant and the intent if I am not mistaken is to have a friendly rival type character. it is very much in the right direction however it does sometimes seem like he is swinging between being comfortable with Rei and being uncomfortable. Rei's reaction towards him on the other hand is perfect.

Wraithmarked Creative

yeah this is the concern I have. pacing. I'm happy with the direction, but the rate is a little much. he may need to slip up soon, but I'm not sure how or where. probably a rage about something not squad-related, but enough to remind them that he's still not whole maybe a good place to provide a chance for him to explain his reasons for being who he is... hmmm...

William Dyer

I liked his little talk with Rei where he acknowledges that he's working on it. It is much more relatable that he knows he has issues and that even if he is not completely 'good' that he is trying. I think the easiest way to make us like the character is that you show he is trying. Not that he necessarily succeeds all the time.

Mike Frenkel

I vote 8. I don’t believe in perfect humans and thus I don’t like perfect Mary Sue like characters. I feel like the reasoning for Logan’s early behavior is strongly realistic and theres enough hints dropped throughout the books that theres something in his backstory that’s made him think the way it does. But he fits the well intentioned extremist trope very well for a reson. He’s not a jerk for the sake of being one. The relationship with Viv is why I went from 10 to 8 for this. I felt like that came a bit out of left field. It makes sense why that relationship is helping him grow, but I would have wanted some more buildup. Again, I get why Viv fell for him: he’s a good guy at heart and his intentions were to benefit the whole student body. But i felt like it ought to be a bit of a longer road between her pissed off at his bullying of Rei and her falling into bed with him.

Craig Bentsen

I think continuing to show us some more Viv POV parts will help things settle. From my perceptions, a lot of the "what the heck" types of comments from Book 1 were that we couldn't wrap our heads around exactly why Viv would, in theory at the time, ignore her friendship with Rei to have a relationship with Grant. There wasn't any externally-visible-to-the-reader reason for her to do so that didn't at the same time cast her as shallow, self-centred, or naive: ye olde "attracted to bad boys". Fast forward to "today" and we see Viv being appropriately cautious / torn / very angry at him on occasion - but I'm not entirely clear still on her reasons for doing so in the first place. We still only have the behind-the-scenes talk after the incident with Grant's crew of sycophantic followers. I think we are starting to get a clearer picture, but my mind at least views not only Grant's behaviour on-screen as key to his redemption arc, but I also clearly want to crawl inside Viv's head a little more to understand what was redeemable about him in the first place.

Lorenzo Cattaneo

I love how Grant is growing and learning to manage his emotions! But I ended up voting 8 with Viv in the context. They are not the main character and we don't see much or their interaction, which is fine, but it feels a bit wierd that whenever Grant does something good Viv is so surprised. She clearly knows more about him than anyone else and she's been pushing for him to be "better", so I would expect her to be more proud and happy than surprised. As I said, it fine that we don't see the details, but the few interactions we see make me feel like the two of them don't really have a connection and she's no different than the rest of the team

Marz

I feel that Grant giving Rei that “peace offering” was a perfect touch and a great way to really kick things off. Shows that Grant really is trying.

Sean Flood

People going crazy whenever he acts human is cliché at this point, I wish they’d just get over it.

Dahoud Askar

I think it’s going really well, whether it’s a slip up or more of his POV to show what kind of struggle he is having, I do think you’ll do an awesome job demonstrating that this isn’t internally without conflict.

Wraithmarked Creative

You know this is a really good thought! I've been matching her to the others, but that's an easy and good opportunity to distinguish their relationship

xXFLorimXx

I like the way and the pace at which the changes happen. To be honest, his relationship with Viv happened to fast and was kinda random in my opinion, especially if you consider his situation with Rey. But since it is already written I'd maybe like a little throwback from Viv's point of view how it even started. I think it could be build in, in a section that is reflecting on the progress of Grant's character

kyle walker

My issue with their relationship is the lack of trust Viv has in her relationship with Rei.

Curtis

Going to offer a different perspective here and hope I don't get mobbed for it. There are a lot of different reasons people disliked Grant, and that makes redemption tricky. So far I feel everything you have done has been directed towards people who disliked Grant because of his antagonistic relationship with Rei, and by the comments I think that's been working very well. However, my problem with Grant is that he is very judgmental and he thinks it's appropriate to use violence to enforce his worldview on others. Not only has this issue not been addressed, the last few chapters has seen Rei and the others also adopt this worldview and we've seen it endorsed by Dent! Viv also has this "persuasion through violence" approach to life, which is why I felt her and Grant worked well together. I was looking forward to seeing them work through this character flaw as a couple. However I'm beginning to think this story doesn't see it as a flaw at all. So, yeah, I think my reason for disliking Grant is slightly different to the majority which is why the 'redemption arc' hasn't really been working for me.

kirbydabear

I mean, why Viv fell for him (and I'm not sure that's exactly the right phrase) is pretty simple: they're both 18 and apparently very attractive.

José Costa Martins Jr.

I'll be honest, I hope I don't get mobbed I think your result is expected, but the approach has too many problems one of which is that it is not satisfying and it kinda acknowledges that there was a flaw in book 1. You are trying to fix an "explicit problem" (by reddit comments) with an implicit (sneaky) approach and I don't think that is going to work with the majority of the readers that have a problem with Grant in the first place... I don't know if you never had a bully in school, but if you did it would feel a complete betrayal if a friend of yours befriended that bully, let's not even talk about dating. With that said, I also think you are missing a MAJOR opportunity to create a redemption arc for Grant and make him one of the most liked characters in the entire franchise. For the first 20 chapters, there are so little problems to deal with that the book does not create tension, therefore it is difficult to move the plot forward... At least, that is how I feel, we've had 20 chapters and almost nothing bombastic happened... So, without trying to tell you what/how to write, I'd love to see the relationship between Rei and Viv take a hit because of Grant, then have Grant fix it thus providing him with a redemption arc... And from that you can advance the plot in so many ways that I think it would be awesome (also, it looks like that is what you planned all along, I'm pretty sure about it) edit: fixed typos and other small phrases

John Cooke

My feeling is that the perception of Grant as he was written in Iron Prince was an interesting one. On the one hand, he was clearly set up as the "final boss" with his fight with Rei being the climactic end to the first arc of Rei's story, and he obviously has deep issues with Rei, but very little is done in the text to try and explain *why* Grant has such issues. Viv obviously knows, and that has shifted her perception of Grant from a good looking hunk of man meat with an attitude problem to a good looking hunk of man meat with a tragic past. But the apparent narrator of the book (not the author per se, but a telepathic space magic entity perched on the shoulder of one of the characters (usually Rei), recording their experiences and thoughts, has no insight into Grant's issues. Yet. So, with Grant's motivations and background being largely a question mark, there is nothing to use as a framework to justify his a-holish behaviour. Now, as we progress through book 2, Grant's background has still not been explained although there are a couple more hints, but his attitude is changing as he sees Rei in a different light, and as Viv is not willing to tolerate his remaining tantrums. It is a bit uncommon, because a lot of authors try to leave a more obvious trail of breadcrumbs for the readers, or even just give them the reason. I am sure that will come later, but this approach, with the truth trickling out one step at a time, is much more like real life, and I like it.

Jake Creates

I think overall the relationship is going fine, but it’s not Vic and grants relationship I think is a bit… unbelievable at this point. I honestly am surprised that rei and Viv don’t have a MUCH more strained relationship over this whole issue. Rei should NOT be okay with how secretive viv is acting about Grant. Rei has shared pretty much EVERYTHING with Viv, all his secrets, including some *huge* ones. After all that, now Viv is like, “no I won’t say *anything* about a boy I like.”!? That’s an imbalanced relationship, made all the worse by Viv *insisting* Rei keep her up to speed constantly. Now that Rei has other friends, this imbalance should dawn on him, causing him to back away from the kind of friendship they have, and someone (maybe even grant) should point out this discrepancy to Viv so she can realize what she did.

Shaolas

Right now I’d say you’ve only provided a brief off camera conversation that can explain Viv’s interest in Grant. Other than purely physical attraction she may have for him. Having said that I’m also fine with it building at the pace you’re going. My main critique overall is I’d like to see more conversations between people where Rei isn’t there, and where the conversations aren’t about Rei. You’ve got a great world built that I feel you could take some time in exploring, and some great characters. Also Reese needs some kind of back story to be a better foil/villain.

Daylan Ethridge

We keep seeing things from other people's side but to be honest a lot of people seem to have an issue with Rei forgiving Grant as they see as so easily because Rei hasnt been very forward with his point of view on it. Maybe given the latest chapter has given Grant his moment to stand up and publicly act on Rei's side we can finally have a true talk between Rei and Grant where Rei gets to talk it out and explain his point if view and why, if he is accepting Grant, that he is doing so. The readers dont have to give Grant a second chance. Rei does. But I also predict that scene needs a little more setup and Viv's involvement more. It likely wouldnt feel natural until Rei reveals his secret to the others

Shannon Bryce

My issue is there's obviously a deep connection between the 2 which is fine but he mentioned in one of the chapters that he had snuck her into his room a few times which is the level of seriousness to the relationship that she really should have been talking to her best friend and teammate about prior to this point.

Scott Hayward

Highly rated not so much because of the content on the page or it’s particular pacing. Rather that the impact he and the relationship has had on the community of readers. You’ve sparked emotion and reaction and that in and of itself is good. Assuming you have a plan then I trust it’s good. I’d of course like more depth around the character especially if my personal theories are close to correct. But it works because we care so keep it up.

Zaul

Just wanted to say. That i think Grant is my favorite character actually beside Rei. There's alot of kinship between this story and some of my own experiences (broke my back and had to through many years of rehab) and the story of all the relationships with grant is very real. I feel like you truly nailed it. His relationship with Viv i think is perfect. It's kind of hard to fully understand from Rei's/our perspective... but i feel thats kind of the point. We are all outsiders to it and only those two feel it. And of course Viv would be different to let Rei know everything. Their bestfriend relationship.. isnt perfect... because its one in which their young and growing. I like others would like to see the Viv/Grant relationship hiddens bits. But i think that comes with time. No matter what, i think this is new for all of them and I'm a big fan of the direction it's going

Gb

It works but now he feels like Viv's pet instead of a whole person. I completely trust us finding out more about him and his reasoning later although i think we got some big hints already. So it shouldn't take Viv pulling him around as much to bring him to the proper conclusions about Rei. It kind of feels like Grant do good and Viv pets him. Grant do bad Viv hits him with a newspaper. Hard to make that likable especially since he doesn't talk much. The last few chapters develop him in the right direction. I guess it could just be quicker for him. Obviously the team still needs the time to come around.

KRDiamond

I love what I can see of the arc you are aiming for with Grant. He clearly has these hang ups for a reason. Motivation from being in the team and seeing the dynamics between the others as well as seeing more of what Rei goes through and how hard he works is great. The Viv motivation I have a bit of a problem with mostly because we have seen so little of their interactions. Other than both of them being young and hot there’s not much pointing to why they would be together let alone why either of them would be motivated to make big concessions. Even with her knowing some of Grant’s backstory it was a huge betrayal of friendship in first book and we don’t have enough on page time showing the emotional component for either of them. I agree with several of the comments above how she seems to be just as surprised as others when he does well and it feels like there is very little connection or understanding between them because of it. I also think the pace of improvement by grant is too fast. He should have more setbacks. Even having huge motivations to be better at controlling his temper it should still be something that at least takes him the rest of the year (unless something really major and life changing happens along the way). The quick turn of grants perception of rei is actually believable. Someone who sees the world in such a black and white way would actually be capable of that shift once it smacked them in the face like getting beat by rei and then watching how clever and hard working he is. Another unrealistic part there is how quickly rei and the team have let things slide. He’s a pretty chill and forgiving person and seems content to not be super petty about it which is cool. But the lack of a visible blowup from anyone during the weeks of training (even if grant was content to be quiet and sullen most of the time) is hard to believe. I really really really like some suggestions above that there were not consequences to Viv’s actions in book 1 and that having grant actually try to help fix the strain from an argument about it would be an amazing way to both tidy that up and also have a progress moment for him and rei. Giving him a moment to actually show that concern over someone he cares about having a big emotional problem would 100% get me over any concerns I have about Viv making a crap friend decision (based only on what we have been able to see for Rei’s perspective). Overall, I really like what you have been doing and if you were to leave the pace of improvement where it is now it would not make me dislike the book. I’ve read plenty of books where emotional pacing was far more unrealistic and still loved them. I only offer this opinion because 1) you asked and 2) I was a grant once upon a time. So I have more of a personal opinion about it. I had an explosive temper and while I wouldn’t go out of my way to bully you, if you pissed me off I would make sure you knew it. I would have also beat up the other kids if I thought they were ganging up on someone like he did too. I collected several friends basically because I saw that people were emotionally abusing them and walked in and stole them from the group. But there were severe social consequences to being my friend. Other kids wouldn’t want to play with them even if I wasn’t around. I saw that and made an effort to change because even though I didn’t care about those other kids’ opinions, I didn’t want my friends suffering over something they cared about because of me. So grant being concerned if Viv and Rei’s friendship was starting to fracture because of him resonates with me big time. But obviously I have the above bias 🤷‍♀️ What you have shown us so far does really vibe with me. But he should crack more often in the early parts. And he really needs a scene where he can talk. Not necessarily rush to give his backstory of why all the anger. But give him an onscreen chance to try, fail, and try again. That would make it easier to believe that the others are seeing progress and are content to let him get there at his pace. Sorry for typos and terrible grammar. Something this long is hard to type and edit in a tiny lil box on a tablet.

dcshort2

I like what you've done with Grant in Book 2, thus far. He's socially an outcast due to his behavior the past semester, and he's working on it. Self-reflection is difficult, especially when one has anger issues, and he works perfectly as the challenge Rei has to overcome at the end of Book 1. I like what we've seen, and I trust that you have a even more development in store for us. Looking forward to it.

Amanda Jones

I think maybe if he shows off a protective instinct towards females during a situation, it would lead to a good timing of him explaining himself. Cuz in the past grant got mad at rei for pushing Viv in friendly manner

Amanda Jones

I actually think the pacing is semi decent for grant and vivs actual relationship cuz she's drawn hard lines and told him to deal with his issues first

Liston Jent

While I know the books largely focus on Ward, and to a lesser extent, Laurent, having more interaction with Viv and Logan visible would be helpful. It's stated that Grant has been 'working with' Viv, but aside from The Ultimatum, we don't see much of it. In general, the pacing and direction seem correct, and the arc in general is great. I especially like the last two chapters, where Grant takes an active role in helping Ward. In general, I'd say add a few more 'private moments' with him and Viv, to get more of an idea for the way he's struggling and working through things, or at least hint at them more.

Keleros

Honestly he was well set up as a redeemable character in book 1, he dislike's subterfuge due to his insane daddy issues and has a very I need no help attitude that many men take to avoid psychiatrists. I'd say willingness to change to be with Viv is a great reason and getting to see him try to change and work through his things is going well without taking away from the story. I am kinda surprised that for an academy that turns teenagers into essentially demigods they don't have mandatory time with a psychiatrist but I think Grant's redemption is going well, especially after he gave up his transferred anger on Rei, probably going to go over a lot better once the entire team is on a first name basis and trusts each other

Randy George

I really like the development of Grant. One the one hand you lose the "arch-enemy" figure but you gain another character to root for as he faces his demons and becomes a better person. Personally I'd like to see Rei, Grant, and Catcher become like "3 muskateers". AND work on getting Catcher a girlfriend. Maybe Cashe??? That could make for some awesome team dynamics wouldn't it?

Decorus

My biggest issue is less about Logan and more about Rei not being more open about everything with his remaining team mates. The biggest stumbling block is a relationship is a two way street and right now it’s all on Rei’s terms. This really makes it impossible for it to go anywhere.

Babasola Osikoya

This is also my fear. I hope it takes more time rather than it being glossed over.

Babasola Osikoya

I'm curious. What do you mean lack of trust?

Joe Barzilai

I LOVE the development of Grant in book 2! His interactions are amazing and his growth makes me love where he's going. My only question in the long term is going to be if I'm reading book 1 into book 2 with them both complete, is the transition to decent human too fast? I don't know as I've been reading book 2 Patreon updates on release. I almost want a little more movement in book 1 because book 2 feels completely natural, but book 1 has some abrupt shifts in attitude. I'd have to read them both with a fresh perspective and I've read them too many times for that. :-)

Anonymous

Hadn't thought about it but 100% on the idea that all these kids should be having a sit down with a psychiatrist at least once a week. And some cases, more than that. With some thing like 3x per week mandatory "self study" periods in the psych building by yourself so that all the other kids can't tell that one person is getting a lot of 1:1 time with a psychiatrist.

Stuart Harrison

I'm loving the Grant stuff. His POV's are especially great. I do understand that this is a fast change in him in the time frame of the book but it is working. The only thing I would like is a little more openess with Viv and Grants relationship, it has the same feel as Rei's secret at this point were everyone basically knows it just needs to be said.

Z.W.Heald

I get why you would do this but I say I’m good without input on your book. If you want to do something I say do it otherwise you are telling someone else’s story and not yours. So I vote 10.

Bsoxmk2

Now I'm imagining a sitcom like sub plot where the rest of the team is trying to set Cashe up with some guy only to find out that she's had a girlfriend all along, not a secret but it just never came up.

kyle walker

Seems obvious that the one person she could trust and confide in is the person she avoids talking to. Makes it seem like their relationship is very one sided.

Joanne Hans

I'd like to see them become one of the great love stories in the series. But I don't want Viv to be the dominant in the relationship.

jeremy kotenberg

I really appreciate that you're being fairly subtle with it and it's not being shoved in our face.

Zebrababies

In terms of redeeming the character I think it’s going well. In terms of his relationship with viv, we’ll we haven’t really seen anything about it yet.

Alan Zhang

In the first book, when there was foreshadowing and allusions to Grant's character and possible redemption arc, I was marginally against it, as the sheer amount of shittiness he gave Rei seemed to be way too much to just be daddy issues for cowardice. I still somewhat feel that unless there are multiple events that compounded into such a burning hatred for cowardice that he made life hell for a new unknown cadet, his treatment of Rei was over the top and therefore can only be attributed to being a shitty person and a bully. That was why i wouldve leaned away from a Grant redemption arc. However, as that is pretty much impossible to undo without leaving a lot of loose ends, I think the way the redemption arc is going is pretty well paced. While I think it couldn't hurt to have a little more information about Grant, I have no real problems with how it is proceeding. His relationship with Viv, however, i think needs much more explanation. For viv and grants first interaction when viv has so much anger towards him to leave such an indelible impression on viv that morphs (i think rather quickly) into them liking each other seemed too fast without knowing what happened in that interaction. Viv and grant felt like they were somewhat forced together, given how close viv and rei are. I dont think the magnitude of horrible treatment that grant gave rei, regardless of reason, would be easily ignored by viv. again, however, that particular ship has sailed. i think grants character would benefit from receiving (maybe from sidorov or some other icsm cadet) some of the bullying behavior that he so gave rei, helping along his character progression. I think it would also be good if his relationship with viv hit some serious problems, maybe even leading to a break [like in friends >:)] Rei, catcher, viv, and aria had a lot of trauma bonding and in order to integrate grant (and cashe too), i feel like some bad things need to happen. forgive my rambling, patreon isnt the best location to start a doctoral dissertation.

Joanne Hans

I wonder if Grant told off Reese for something he perceives as cowardly would help the team and instructors see that he needs more help with his what I can only think of as some form of PTSD. Most people would not go off on a higher ranked officer if they thinking straight.

Jason Bradford

I like the direction you’ve taken him, Bryce. I think he’s

Jason Bradford

struggling to deal with the fact that he respects his new teammates - it’s not something he’s accustomed to dealing with, and he certainly never talks to anyone about his pain. Now Viv demands both, and youve made his character one that is honest regardless. One thing i picture that you havent sdded yet? I picture he and vivs relationship as a lot more physical - her smacking him, jumping on him, wrestling him - hes a big manly jungle gym for her

Bill

logan is beauty and viv is the beast right?

Decorus

It doesn’t feel like a natural progression forward as Logan personality wise is going to spiral at being outside the inner circle. To get him to open up and start moving forward Rei needs to tell Logan and Cashe his growth spec in the hospital to cement the the team as an actual team. Logan personality wise is more likely to lash out, because he’s being kept on the outside and isn’t being trusted. Cashe is a problem, because she isn’t developed in any significant way.

Dougie Mitchell

I'm pretty happy with the progress so far, his issues and redemption are going along at a slow and reasonable pace - as you would expect. My only issue is that I do think Logan and Cashe really should be in the S club

Tina Benshoof

For me, the pacing of Logan's growth is ideal, and I get the sense that he sort of understands why he's not totally trusted yet, or at least isn't impatient with having it completely resolved. I'd give it a 9/10, with just a wish that Viv would open up a tiny bit about it being a relationship at all.

Mark

I have been enjoying the Grant story Arch. Someone with a traumatic history can't change overnight. Viv's brutal honesty and caring personality is perfect for Logan.

Mark

I believe that's coming sooner rather than later. It's just going to take another event against Rei and their support for him. Absolute trust must be earned, and I think that event is coming during sectionals. Remember Aria's mom got access to something she shouldn't have and she doesn't want Rei around her daughter. I think she's going to try to mess with Rei somehow thinking she is protecting Aria.

Matt Moran

Grant was such a good rival. I feel like something has been lost and his turnaround has been rather quick. I like the direction though. And some of his scenes have been great.

Blake Rich

Especially as I re-read the consolidated chapters (1-20) and how you've refined the interactions, I'm loving it. I look forward to the continued refinements as the book progresses. (Hopefully everyone is re-reading the chapters as they come out -- I love how we can see the progression from raw, first stab to fleshed out story line with each new drop)!! Grant feels more real now.

Rachelle Swain

I'm loving the redemption arc, but would love to see some kind of regression or lash out that results in some more formal intervention by teachers to help him grow through his trauma. It's important to remember that a person so deeply affected sees repercussions in different areas and everyone needs help growing past failure. I also love the idea of the hated rival becoming the "this person might know me better than anyone" rival, which I think is where you are going, they will never be besties but they will always help push eachother in various ways.

PaulBFB

I've said it a bunch of times, I had my doubts about that, but I REALLY like the way that it's going so far. I think Logan and Rei could end up with a great buddy dynamic. That being said - I think there's a bit of a mismatch between how much/how quickly Logan is changing and how much we actually see a reason for it - so I'm sure his relationship with Viv is having a strong influence on him, but the fact that we hardly ever see it and not even "hear" about it second-hand makes it feel a bit abrupt. Maybe that's the intention, and from Rei's POV it's supposed to be a quick change and later we hear about the whole process? I feel like it's not so abrupt as to be jarring yet, but it's going in that direction a bit. On a related note - Viv being extremely tight-lipped about what is going on between her and Logan to Rei seems fairly out of step with the rest of the dynamic of their friendship. If Viv was my closest friend, that would raise all sorts of red flags for me; while I respect the wish for privacy to some extent, not wanting to tell your close friends anything of what is going on (or that there is anything going on at all) is often a sign of an unhealthy relationship.

I don’t know if it’s already been mentioned somewhere here, but I’m pretty sure we’ve gotten a major hint at what made him so spiteful towards cowardice. There’s a chapter where they explain about the ai’s inability to spot a person’s potential true intentions or something along those lines. It gives 2 examples. One a serial killer and another a general who abandons his post to the archons or something to that effect, and as a result it leads to the deaths of a ton of innocent people. I think that might have been his father. But I might be wrong. If I’m right though. That seems like a very realistic reason to develop such an adverse reaction to the hint of cowardice. I just think it’s Viv’s reactions to him that seem a little too convenient to me. Not properly fleshed out or not enough time to lead to her eventual softening up to him. I don’t really believe it, I guess is what I’m saying. Maybe we have to see more direct conversations between Viv and Logan in the next book where they actually discuss his issue with Rei and she really challenges his reasoning etc. at the moment it is almost like the game of thrones tv show thing they did where they made Daenerys a Monster over night. I could see what they were going for but they rushed that transformation and as a result it wasn’t believable. Hope this makes remotely any sense. Lol Edit: I just started reading the early released chapters of book 2. I think you’re handling the Viv and Logan thing expertly. My frustrations were solely with her decision making in the last book. Now that we see her interactions with him. I appreciate what you’re doing.

I like the arc but think it's been too smooth. There should be bumps. Two steps forward, one step back. Ingrained personality issues don't magically disappear because you meet a girl. To portray otherwise isn't realistic and is the wrong kind of lesson to teach your younger readers.

Writing wise i think youve done a great job, but i think I’m in agreement with a lot of people here when i say he cant do it right all the time. He needs to mess up and pick himself back up and try aagain. Personally i see something along the lines of a fairly even team battle where the other team is heavily strategy focused and triggers that rage in grant either a scout running away from him or something that he gets lured into a trap and ends up dying and creating a really rough situation for the team even if they still win. Something that aria can step in and have kind of a “were a team or were not, choose” moment for that kind of tentative part of the group to fade as he puts as much effort as he does for viv towards the whole group

Ben Heggem

agreed but too late to back track now after he's written half the book. maybe tweak a few of the first interactions, but changing them all is almost like rewriting and I don't think this is a big enough situation to warrant that

I think the step back was when Grant unloaded on Rei at the team training battle and had got an ultimatum from Viv.

As a character, he is growing and gaining more depth and relatability. But there has been no more progress or added depth into his relationship with Viv.

I think Logan's progression and internal monologue has been very good and have been hoping to see more things from his perspective since the short convo with Rei after their fight. There has been very little light shone on his and Viv's relationship so not to sure on what to comment on it. Obviously being the private people they are to such things, we'll never see much externally over time. But, even from Logan's monologue, or even potentially Viv's, it would be good to see more rationale. Regardless of whatever of us thinks, his and their story has been enjoyable to do date, keep it up!

Completely agree. Having Rei and Aria turn a blind eye to Viv and Grant is a major issue at the moment. Grant has seen no repercussions for his actions in BK1. Viv pressures Rei to speak about his meeting with Kamiya yet gets hostile when Rei wants to speak about Grant. Too one-sided relationship.

Agree with those who’ve said there’s not been enough experience of Viv and Logan together. It would help to see more of maturing/trying Logan also.

Rexclamation

Not giving criticism at all, but the fact that Viv was almost hiding it at first, and that Reidon (using his first name because it’s the best MC name I’ve ever ran into) had no objections to it is interesting in terms of character growth. People don’t hide things they think is right. And usually people get mad at their best friend for cozying up with their bully. Could be a growing point for both of them :)

After chapter 22 it’s perfect!

Yall need to get in more fist fights not screaming matches... I don't know there's something primal about beating the hell out of somebody that did you dirty. A finality to it. Like, "Okay, this is my point. I am right. And you need to accept it. Or imma beat the crap outta you." And as a man, you just gotta accept it. And there's a primal part of your brain that has to respect it, if you have any kind of honor. That's what happened between Logan and Rei. Y'all are too used to "talking out your feelings." Sometimes, you just gotta fight. Tell me, when's the last time you ever turned a bully, or an enemy into someone that respects you by "Talking to them." It never happens. You know what does make them respect you? A black eye, and busted lip. It's not really something everyone is comfortable with these days. But litterally for thousands of years of human history accross hundreds of cultures, this is a big part of how boys solved their problems with each other.

I'm a little late here, but some of my favorite chapters are the ones told from Logan's perspective. I would love to have more of those.

Ayce-o-Spades

A bully is a bully no matter the reason. Viv deserves backlash along with Logan. If your ”best friend” starts dating your bully can that person truly be trusted. You don’t act shitty and then have everyone around you just shrug it off, it is completely unrealistic. Viv is an awful friend and Logan is still simply an a-hole. I voted 2 because the way this played out is completely off putting and unrealistic. Also why does Viv hide so much when she excepts everyone else to tell her everything? Her relationship with Rei is completely one sided. I know it’s unchangeable at this point but wow good job on ruining Viv along with Grant who was already a POS.

John O'Connor

I’d still prefer to see him dead honestly. Viv deserves better.

Travis

It would be great to have a chapter just on Grant to get to know him better, and maybe have a bit more visibility on private time between him and Viv. Grant’s past as a driving factor for his anger issues is a great opportunity to let readers dive into who Grant is. Right now his behavior change seems a bit shallow because it feels like Viv is forcing it. Realistically behavior change comes from someone wanting to change. Beyond Viv, why does Grant want to change?
