Pretty simply. Rei is now by *far* the strongest first year. Proven by his ability to fight Aria and win. His growth, all things considered, will slow down. We know this because his biggest jumps are made when he’s losing fights, and that’s just not likely to happen anymore unless he does more training with people like Lennon

Temporal Shift: A truly ultimate ability (theory). Rei activates the ability after a period of time into a fight, not because it needs EM energy to build up like repulsion, but because some battle data is needed for predictions. Then, once activated, time essentially stops, and Rei simulates the rest of the battle, or more likely at the beginning a short period of time from activation, maybe 30 seconds or so, but its simulated in 1 mode of type shift. Then Rei ends the ability activation and is forced into a second type shift mode (brawler-> saber for example). NOW there are two Reis one in each mode. The simulated type follows the battle plan that was simulated, while the shifted Rei takes advantage of openings and essentially has to team up with a pre-programmed him. Insanely hard to master or even use effectively. Upgrade this over time like type shift upgraded and eventually you'd have 6 Reis, 1 in each type weaving a storm of steel around the battlefield. Bonus points: Lennon echoes the ability(ies) and we get an absolute archon blender.

I think the stats we see are for the Preferred Mode, Brawler. When he Shifts into Saber or his new Mode, I'm sure the primary stat will be high C's or low B's

whats funny is rei thought about doing that in iron prince when he was in the brig but wrote it off at the time cause he couldn't even touch aria at the time. if he had tried it with catcher he'd probably be halfway through the b's by now

It wouldn't surprise me if Aria had endurance or defence at B0 (think she's C7). Rei's other stats have always been lagging a bit due to his growth, wouldn't be that weird to think Aria's defence (or Grant's strength stat) were higher than their overall CAD rank.

I thought that Rei would end up in the older student bracket from the time I first heard it mentioned many chapters ago that “in exceptional circumstances “ first years could be placed there. Bryce even made a point to mention that Aria would have picked Rei’s brawler friend for their group if somehow Rei wasn’t there.

I was thinking the same thing. It's probably going to depend on which type he's using, assuming he got a new type from Type Shift, and the upgrade doesn't just mean something else. The evolutions seem to be prioritizing what he needs to survive in these fights. Since this evolution prioritized everything, there's no telling how Shido changed. Maybe he's got the full suit now, not just the helm too. 🤷‍♂️

I think Temporal Step will effect his speed and cognition stats in the same way that Overclock enhances Strength and Endurance. Temporal refers to time. Aka: Time Step, which may further look like lightening if Bryce continues on the motife that type shift brought. This us just a theory. Rei having a custom variation on Overclock and a custom variation on Arsenal Shift would make sense.

One out of the box theory I have is temporal step allows a step back in time by N seconds (say 30) rather than just time dilation. Would be a little drastic though.

A lil less OP than jumping backwards (if only because you have to be able to think ahead enough to know what you are about to blink forward to). Do you realize the implication of this... Rei at C9 is considered adequate to face those S1s? So what kind of beast will he be at Pawn? Shido is a vengeful CAD... he does not like to lose! I think you are over thinking it. Of course C9 would not be considered adequate to face S1 enemies. If he's lacking he grows. It doesn't mean that he grows right away to be 'adequate' to tho enemies he was lacking against. He would have many many 'severely lacking' fights against those S1s even if he grows after every fight. But, I can also picture it. :)

I don't know, duelist is speed focused, and would pair better with a teleport-esk step-ability. I just think duelist wouldn't add much change in fighting style other than make a smoother transition between saber and brawler. Phalanx is defense focus, but would act as an extension of the saber form, with saber being more transitional between brawler and phalanx (I mean in combat, not that he couldn't jump from on form to the next.)

Also, type shift is cool, but no one has mentioned that it may come with some arsenal shift automatically built in at some point, and it would be really cool to see a far more A-type weapon or evolution.

Friends, the questions here are a simple ones. 1) is the MIND involved in the attack in order to fast track him? 2) is it the fleet doing what they did early with the test manipulations to see his limits? 3) is it his family trying to gain his favor in coming to them for additional aid and support? 4) is there another group or player in the game that has not yet revealed themselves? 5) combination of all of the above? 6) just tell me to shut up and stop speculating.

I think the question is: why would anyone want to fake kill him by a hundred blade strikes? You can rule out unknown players - because you don't get any lesson, warn away, or anything similar without an accompanied threat. So we have Central, the Mind, Reese, and Kamiya. Then we have to ask ourselves, why S1? Now it could be that whoever chose the bots did so with the victims highest spec deciding the bot level, but it would more likely be deliberate.

Only Kamiya would not know Rei has S ranked growth, so only they would make the mistake of creating bots at his highest. However, if you were super worried about Archons and a kid not developing fast enough, that would include Central & The Mind (Dent has already said he needs to develop at his own pace).

Maybe it was an attempted murder. Maybe a certain amount of even simulated pain can actually cause the body to shut down. I feel like I’ve seen that before in another series. And because Rei has such a high pain tolerance already and Dent interfered, the attack failed.

Because the question seems to be who, most likely suspect would be a corporate competitor to Kamiya. Take the following from chapter 6: “Simple enough. You will make Kamiya’s interest in Reidon known. You will make it know—through the right channels, of course—and you will make it clear that any party who attempts to join us on this dance floor with find themselves cut off of every product Kamiya might be providing them, now and forever. If they aren’t already a customer, then their parterres will be cut off, and so on, and so forth.” Basically, you threatened me to stay out, so I stayed out but broke your toy another way. Best guess is they failed to take into account his tenacity and expected him to quit after the experience. They are probably the ones who got paid by Salista to do the other hack, but then figured they could build this in as well... just because. Removing Reese from it due to him only being re-assigned and not killed. Removing Central due to their reaction. Removing Dent due to her saving. Removing Kes due to her asking why the bad feeling. Removing the MIND due to his statement that the ISCM was unlikely to do something crazy as they were trying to slow the spread of knowledge about him, which also clears Central again. Removing Kamiya due to them wanting to play honestly and fair ish, and the birth/seed giver as they would never jeopardize their future any more than they already have over this. Removing anyone relying on Kamiya because they know Kamiya is going to investigate them over this. So competitor who can then say "look at their empty threat" that is why you should go with us...

There is also the group that provided Aria's mom with her little cheat trigger. They are a player here too, and her thoughts about getting played by them could have something to it. She did carry their thing right into the stadium for them even if she didn't trigger it herself.

I was thinking his parents as well. We don’t know exactly what Kamiya helped with in the development of CAD technology. It could very well be that they helped build the arenas, and that would give the parents opportunity. 🤷‍♂️

Guess I should have been more specific. It feels like manipulation like this turns Rei into a dependent variable, rather than an independent variable. In which case, Rei is no longer something to be measured and observed, since the outcome is constrained and predetermined. Does that help explain what I’m getting at?

I guess the question might just come down to the number of constraints the MIND is comfortable with. It’s clearly using DENT to mentor Rei, so that’s some kind of constraint. I just feel as if overt manipulation like this during ISCM tournaments seems out of “character” when it could do this during any simulated combat. I just don’t see the motive for this instance *specifically*.

Is the MIND in charge of evolutions? I thought it assigned the CADs, but evolutions are determined by the circumstances surrounding the CADs.

Where I see the variable is the evolution. Let's say the mind wants to see what happens next but has no control of the event, so forcing the process isn't necessarily a constraint as it is a speed up.

do we actually know anything about how CADs evolve? i mean we know work hard and you'll get stat increases but evolutions seem different and happen at different times for everyone

With the way the Dent chapters read, with the text of this Kess (which i believe to be a short hand version of her CAD name), I assume that CADs are each their own AI that would probably evolve with their own experiences taken into account. Though, as far as I'm aware, we don't know if the mind has anything to do with it or not

Do you think there is any possibility the Archons could be involved? Information about them is pretty limited, and while they are presented as not fully ¿intelligent? or active outside of the war zone I feel like that information could be proved to be inaccurate especially looking at Kes being a fully conscious intelligent being based on their technology. I feel like archons having some access to the networks and hacking capabilities shouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility, and Rei could be seen as a threat. - also would work with shifting the narrative towards what I imagine will be the broader conflict of the series.

Agreed. We are told that Dent could barely break the barrier. Thus, it would have been unexpected. He nearly had brain damage. Someone wanted him to become a vegetable and it was a person with access to the mafia group Salista used. Most likely someone corporate with big bucks. I agree his parents are very likely suspects.

I like the idea of the Archons possibly having a pre-cognitive ability and preemptively trying to stop the rise of a god tier CAD user; however if they did I can't imagine them "losing" the war. I think it's far more likely someone in Central command is notice the pattern of stronger opponents equals more growth for shido and trying to force evolutions. A very effective training technique to "Power level" shido. Which honestly has been proven correct from their point of view because I doubt they give a damn about psychological trauma. Very cold and logical which fits what we have seen of Central so far.
