Still deciding on this guys personality so it will be interesting to see if it changes for the final!

**********

There was a thump of someone sitting down beside him, and Rei started painfully, opening his eyes and blinking against the brightness of the Arena light. He looked around a little blearily, wondering if maybe one of the other first years had come to keep him company, or even if he’d have to argue with a stubborn Viv that yes, she did actually have to get off her ass and go and fight. The latter might have been an unlikely sight, sure, but it was about a thousand times more plausible than the reality.

Next to him, his silvery eyes narrow and cold, was none other than Anatoli Sidorov.

“Ward,” Sidorov said flatly, as though his sufficed as a greeting. “How goes the basking in the spotlight? Again.”

Rei was so taken aback by this question he spent a solid few seconds just staring the second year.

“S-sorry?” he finally spluttered, completely dumbfounded.

“Don’t be coy, first year.” Siddorov’s voice was low, his lips a flat, unamused line that had the hair on Rei’s arms standing on end. “You’ve been the golden boy of the Galens Institute for a while now. Must be nice.”

Rei couldn’t have been more confused if he’d opened his eyes to find himself abruptly teleported into some medieval fantasy world. He glanced around to find Dent gone—probably off with Aria and the others—and Takeshi cleverly engaged with her back to him by the rest of Siddorov’s King’s Law. Which only alarmed Rei more, obviously. “Golden boy”? Him? Ever since the Intra-Schools maybe it was true that there wasn’t anyone left in his class that didn’t take him seriously, but given what most of the first semester at the Institute had been like, calling him “Golden boy” seemed a little out of touch…

Then and there, staring at Sidorov with wide eyes as he tried to figure out what the hell was going on, Rei decided he didn’t like the second year.

Not one bit.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Rei got out at last, and he was pleased to hear that his voice had steadied. The jolt of adrenaline that had come with finding the ace of the second years seated next to him had taken the edge off his pain, too, so he was able to glare back at Sidorov in turn. “Actually, let me rephrase that: What are you talking about?”

Sidorov’s expression hardened.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about, Ward.” The cool tone of his voice had taken on a venomous edge. “You’ve got everyone wrapped around your little finger, don’t you? Laurent, Dent, the Colonel. I’ve heard a rumor you’re even getting special instruction from the sub-instructors once we get back to school. That true?”

“And what’s it to you if it is?” Rei asked flatly.

Sidorov grimaced in annoyance at that, but didn’t answer. Instead, he looked Ward up and down, his eyes lingering momentary on Shido’s paired bands.

“That CAD… Seems like you won the lottery, didn’t you? How the hell did you get assigned something like that? What did you say in the third portion of the exam?”

Rei stiffened, and this time for an altogether different reason. He wasn’t surprised in the least that Sidorov was seemed to be assigned Shido all the credit for his meteoric rise. Rei was used that and then some, and it would take willful ignorance at this point for people not to start whispering that there was something special going on about Shido. No. Rather, Sidorov’s last question was toeing a dangerous line.

A very dangerous line…

“Third part of the assignment exam isn’t something we talk about,” he said slowly, watching Sidorov’s apathetic face. The second year’s expression could have been made of stone, though, for all he reacted.

“The MIND’s not gonna swoop in and take your Device back because you let something slip about the test, Ward. Users are to valuable to get the boot for something like that, especially cadets like us.”

Rei raised an eyebrow at that. “‘Cadets like us…’” he repeated slowly. “Wonder what you mean by that, Sidorov…?”

Again, however, the Lancer didn’t even flinch. Not a hint of a frown, of a smile, of pride or shame. He just… looked. Like a statue. A very dangerous, very close, statue.

“Some things don’t have to be spelled out, Ward,” Sidorov answered after a moment. “But I think you’re smart enough to know what I mean. And you didn’t answer my question. What did you say to get assigned that CAD?”

“I didn’t answer your questions because I’m not going to answer your question. What’s your baggage, man?” Rei forced himself to sit up straight, working hard not to wince in discomfort at the movement. “You’ve got balls to be ignoring Dent’s orders, I’ll give you that.”

“What orders?” Sidorov asked flatly. “We’re just not allowed to ask you about what happened out there.” He waved a hand lazily over where the rest of his squad was still keeping Takeshi distracted, indicating the still-empty Arena floor. “Didn’t mention anything about that particular subject, did I?”

“That’s thin argument,” Rei growled.

Again, Sidorov didn’t react. It was like the guy didn’t know what emotion was, like the only thing that mattered to him was what was directly in front of him. Sure enough, he opened his mouth, undoubtedly about to push further for an answer.

Then, though, he froze, and first the first time his expression changed ever so slightly as something on Rei’s other side claimed his attention. His eyes widened ever so slight in what might have been surprise, and his whole body tensed as though involuntarily.

Before Rei could look around to see what had taken the second year so aback, a familiar voice spoke up from his left, and he understood immediately what had put the Lancer on edge.

“Walk away, Sidorov. Now.”

George Van Buren

thank you Bryce, nice interplay between the top of each year, looking forward to the rest of the conversation

Kaji Aldewolf

It's only a matter of time before people start asking indirectly, and then directly. Good thing Ward has some good protection... But to a point

Shreyam Kumar

Bets on that being the Lasher!!!!

Michael

How are y’all pronouncing Sidorov’s name because I swear I read it differently in my head every time idk why I just feel like it’s Russian

Jason Bradford

Yup. It’s Lasher time…and Sidirov is a douche. Next target…..

Grakyn

Patreon bandwidth took a hit this week just from me hanging out and hitting refresh waiting for this. I'm an addict. Thanks Bryce!!!

LeaphyMoon

People are going to starting hating him to. Started as E and now suddenly he's the highest ranked first year? Claiming a rank that has taken some years, and he got it in months? People will be pissed

Kaji Aldewolf

Oh yeah, that's already started. He's going to have to deal with a lot of animosity once he gets back to school probably. Yay for social dynamics~

Georgina Shultz

I'm excited to see more of this conflict, Sidorov has been looming for a while now

kyle walker

weirdly enough...this is exactly how i pictured Sidorov

Zac

Is anyone else reading Sidorov's dialogue in a Russian accent? Also, Mr O'Connor, it's getting really difficult to tell who has the better "don't mess with me" lines between Dent and Lennon. Looking forward to when this next chapter drops! :)

Gregg Moses

I love Lenon, he is the man!

LeaphyMoon

I pronounce it sid-er-off, imaging it as Russian

Will Buck

I believe Luke Daniels say sid-er-off. Maybe sid-er-ov. His first name is Anatoli though so it's definitely Russian.

kurt bodenstedt

You can apply the rule of 2 to dent and lennon for who can be more badass in enforcing school policy

Adam

Oh fuck yes

Keleros

This was a cool interaction with the second years, but I really hope this doesn't mean we need to wait longer than tomorrow to see the reaction Grant and Cashe have to finding out about Rei's S rank

Adam

Love the difference between Grant and Sidorov as antagonists. Really looking forward to their interactions! Bring on more Lasher!

Ray Gadd

The comment about cadets like us, that could open any number of different boxes from elitism to mind blowing.

Sam Mason

Definitely seeing it as jealousness. With Lennon and Rei both being A type, Sidorov having a lancer typing, and nothing "unique" to claim as his own. He feels suppressed and out shown by his third and first year counterparts.

Keleros

Well, the first time Rei and Sidorov could meet in a real SCT match would be next year at this same point. if in a bit more than half a year he went from F-8 to C-9 what will he be by the time he has to face him? He is most definatly afraid Rei will just outshine him, and badly.

Sam Mason

Sidorov would also have been in Aria's position as the top first year in his class. But rei literally just showed him that it wouldn't be worth much next to his growth

Katherine Clark

Kit Kat...I've missed something! Don't understand your comment. Please explain. I will say, Cadet Siderov certainly does not like to lose....and he is concerned!!

Coramoor

did a psycho/sociopath slip past the MIND

Sugoi

During the intra school battles I believe. Sidorov basically one shotted a different 2nd year.

Fleetpanda

Hmm I can get being pissed about his growth, but being actively antagonistic at *this moment* seems odd and like it’s just asking for trouble. Also what’s the goal o_O he’s just antagonizing someone sidirov knows will be successful. It’s not like he can go and get assigned another cad. In other words, Sid is nuts

Grakyn

Ramping up the angst and friction between these two for a coming battle in Book 3. Calling it.

Ibiso Charles

Didn’t Grant ask about Rai’s growth speck a while back? I think it’s when the testing parameters where tampered with at school.

saynt

yes but rei didnt tell them

Keleros

It was heavily implied in the last chapter that both of them found out when they got to their seats. Since the MIND was debating letting them know but Dent said that the discussion was pointless and they were both having a wierd look implying that Rei told them.

Daylan Ethridge

With Grant having turned over a new leaf and Reese being removed we needed a new opponent and Sidorov is looking like he'll be nice and dislikable!

Xien

The MIND likes to be entertained... Variables damnit

Xien

Especially after the very definitive beat down the Lasher handed his as

Xien

YEA he's a little psycho... What's crazy is how he rules his team? Color me crazy... What did he do to whip them into such good stooges?

I still can't think of anything

I hope Bryce doesn't 'redeem' him in the future. The story needs an arsehole, and major Reese is becoming less relevant. I hope Rei puts the beat down on him personally. Maybe sid and Reese make a haters club and start getting nefarious

Jeff McClure

I’m actually getting a more sinister vibe from the dude. Like he thinks Rei gamed the MIND. Like he understands that the third part is what actually decides the CAD and you get sorted accordingly. It feels like he is asking for other reasons than just because he is the “golden boy”. Especially, given his current reactions. It wouldn’t surprise me if the power behind “Sid” is related to the attacks on Rei. There so much weaved here that I am excited at the possibilities. But, this is just me spitballing and I don’t even want an answer except in prose form.

Scott Sherrett

I like that if you keep Sidorov's personality as is we will have a strong antagonistic character that Rei can do something about similar to Grant but a much higher threat as he's a second year that's in the top tier while Grant was a top tier first year. Two very different tiers of power so to speak. Great chapter either way love it all!

cafenacet

Sidirov's a jerk, but I do sorta get where he's coming from. Rei's been working his butt off, but it's not like the rest of his group or Lennon or (probably) Sidirov are slackers. Outside of the one cram session before his fight with Grant and maybe some of the coding he does to his implant, it doesn't seem like Rei is training more than his group. But despite his disadvantages (physical weakness and part-time job limiting his training pre-Galens and not having any combat instructors like Aria, Viv, and Catcher did) Rei skyrocketed past everybody else and got three abilities in the time other people were lucky to get one. This isn't a writing complaint, just a consequence of the worldbuilding. But yeah, without any insight into how the MIND determines CAD assignments, it can seem like you got screwed over with a subpar CAD because the MIND didn't like you or whatever. Also, while A-Types can be much more hit-or-miss than the other types, when they hit they *really* hit. Poor Sidirov just got a boring Lancer CAD. (I will say that him being mad Rei is getting special treatment is a bit rich, since Dent flat out says that the hardest working and best cadets will get more resources. I'm sure Sidirov has benefited from this policy too, if not to the same degree.)

Dylan King

I would actually really enjoy it if you kept Sidirov like this, but instead of him being angry at Rei's special treatment, having him be angry at Rei's lack of awareness of his special treatment, as dent said, the best get special treatment so they can continue to excel and so the rest have incentive, Very much a "check your privilege" or at least be aware of it, kind of situation. Im really glad i signed up im thoroughly enjoying reading these as they come out.

Dylan King

also i apologise if this is what you were talking about in regards to feedback, im just super into how your story is going and wondering which way you are gunna go with it "out loud."

Shannon Bryce

Lasher. Yay. I just assume/hope its him

KRDiamond

Oh yay a chapter! This week has been hell but this can be my reward. Chapter Fridays are the best 🥰

KRDiamond

Probably good soldier material. If the MIND predicted he doesn’t have what it takes to be the best in the SCTs then he will end up on the front lines instead

Brandon Quill

Lennon is pissed. I love it. (Also, digging this slight characterization of Sidorov, been curious about him for a while)

Michael Keene

I can understand why sidirov is angry/jealous of Rei. He might be the star of the 2nd years but he's always in the shadow of Lennon. I think he has a chip on his shoulders, especially with rei receiving all the attention that he has. Looks to be another banger of a chapter! As usual lol.

Reaperess

I think it's more accurate to say he was in Grant's position before Aria, Rei, and especially Viv got a hold of him.

Linda Thompson

Thanks for the sneak peek, tomorrow is getting closer 😊

Kory Leach

I don’t think Bryce would have that conversation be a “Meanwhile in the Batcave” moment. As it will be a significant part of the trust building in the team. Rei will let them know, I’m suspecting either in a room after the finals or upon returning to Galens when Firesong can be alone and for the questions Cashe and Grant will have.

Mike Frenkel

I may be reading into this a bit much, but since I'm a russian speaker, I can't help but notice Sidorov's name. It's super common, often used in humor alongside Ivanov as a stereotypical Russian name. I wonder if you meant to name him that in a similar vein to Rei's name foreshadowing the lightning he seems to becoming more and more associated with. Sidorov's a hard worker but he's stuck with very mundane abilities, and wants to be more then that. Everyone around him, has crazy things going for them. Unique weapons, abilities and skills. Meanwhile he just has to plod along. Also, thank you for using Anatoli as a name. It's so annoying that every Eastern European person showing up in fiction is named either Michael, Vladimir or Boris if they're a guy. Seeing a less common one is great.

Mike Frenkel

It is Russian. The proper pronunciation is See-duh-ruhv. The v at the end cuts off, so its more like "f" instead of "rove" and the o is pronounced like uh instead of "ah" or "oh". The first name is pronounced like it's read, but with a longer "e" sound at the end and a y as in "yup": Ah-nah-toh-lee-y.

jacob shlagel

The way sidorov says users like us. Immediately made me think back to when the mind said he needed more variables and really makes me wonder what his interview with the mind was he seems to know more than he should

Gregory Van Gundy

That's an interesting bit that I wouldn't have known or put together (the Anatoli Sidorov portion). So, your comment was definitely much appreciated by me, 😁

Mike Frenkel

The name is almost certainly deliberate. His team’s name is King’s Law, which is taken from Sidorov deriving from Isidor and Isis, the egyptian goddess of kings. I love how he and his fits so perfectly with his name.

Sam

I took it as him just being cocky; users like us, that is talented users can get away with stuff because we are so good.

jacob shlagel

But it seems like he also insinuates that Rei is only where he is because of his CAD, also because of his arrogance I don’t think he would ever put himself on a level with a first year or admit that the first year was in his class
