I am almost positive there's going to be a v2 of this chapter cause i'm not really happy with certain elements of it, but for the time being this is my "don't get it right, get it written!" version!

Chapters will be dropping as Bryce completes them. That means anywhere from every 1 to 2 weeks on average, though sometimes waits may be longer.

Recall that these are rough chapters, with no editing other than a single pass-through as Bryce writes.

On a similar note, we are not asking for advice or corrections at this time. If Bryce wants feedback, we will certainly reach out, thank you! If you want to voice concerns or complaints about the chapter, you may now do so over on the Reddit discussion thread below! Notifications are turned off on those conversations, so they're a free-for-all now (within the rules of the subreddit, obviously)!

Yay a new chapter! Just curious was the “confused about the Gatecrasher’s name” bit because you personally couldn’t remember it while typing away? Because there’s no way Rei would forget that field name…not when he sleeps with a Gatecrasher body pillow and all…😉

I hate saying this, but I have to agree with you Bryce. It’s not a bad chapter by any means and it still left me wanting more (damn you and your cliffhangers). There’s just something missing, not sure what, which is why I’m glad I’m not writing this book.

Ooh… finally done with that very long day. Long breath. Things moving along again. Fight times! I was hoping Rei, who’s still a bit shell shocked, would have looked at the statues around the arena and then remembered to squeak to Aria he might have accepted something that he forgot to tell her about.

Very nice chapter! Moves the story along nicely, and ends at a good spot. Few things though: Logan lives on the 4th floor Bretz was promoted to 2nd lieutenant last book The first years practice on SB2 Lovely nod to O’Rourke’s field name being so messed up :oD

Seconded, although I think it is specifically Rei that feels off in the last quarter. No way should he be able to focus even on fighting with Viv missing. And it also feels as if there's a bit of a missed opportunity of growth between Rei and Logan. The "We'll ask her together" is strong, but it comes and goes without proper buildup and no real payoff.

That may be it. The interaction with Logan definitely feels awkward. Plus the while fighting, I can see it going both ways where he wants to take it out on someone.

It wasn't until reading Chief warrant officer Michael Bretz's dialog that it hit me, I miss the voices from the audiobooks. It's so well done.

yeah, I'm with you on this. Besides a little too much "tell" and not enough "show" in the first half of the chapter, there's just a little bit of a feeling of "offness" that's hard to put a finger on.

A good build up and moving the story along chapter. I am curious if Shido will impact Viv’s CAD in her recovery and how. Part of me regrets joining this so soon because I constantly feel strung out waiting for the next chapter.

Ooh I admit I'm curious to see reactions to Rei. Especially if he unveils Temporal Step. Sidorav will be seething even harder once that news gets out. Also interested in the word among the feeds when that gets known. Worried about Logan. Hope things turn out OK there.

Pretty sure he won't be using that in training with other students. At this point he could probably wipe the floor with any three first year cadets not part of Firesong without using any ability. It takes instructors with experience and several levels above him to even push him now. Heck, I'm semi convinced he could've gotten the Major if he really put his mind to it.

An enjoyable chapter indeed, I definitely skimmed through a good chunk because it's really just recap meant for readers later on. So it does suck how fast I finished reading it. With the ending we got, I'm glad we're getting it now! Hopefully it's not skipped and talked about down the line. I enjoy the "live" chapters you write when it comes to Rei ogling and fanboying over Shido, while others looked on shocked or in Aria's case - just as excited as Rei. Maybe we'll be seeing an endless wave of sorts? Bretz mentioned how they plan to crack down on stressing Rei and Shido, so I wonder if it'll go this way or Rei fighting small groups of cadets at a time. Anyways, once everything new is shown from Rei. I just know Sarah iirc, is going to press the matter of her transfer even harder. I don't believe we got her got rank specified, but her team were runner-ups in the team battle or wargames. I'll just have to double check at some point. Regardless, I'm interested in seeing her role as a second year with Sidorov around.

Something about that narrator is a little bizarre though he does weird accents for everyone. Aria is a clumsy South American accent and I couldn’t even tell what he was trying to make catcher. I think it was a bad southern accent? Idk I got a few hours in and had to stop listening, I’ll stick to just reading them. The narrator is not good in my opinion

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the story is not moving anywhere, I understand its all just draft however, out of the 5 chapters, 3 chapters were just people reacting, Rei's sister, Viv's injury. I don't mind the wait but it feels the story is being dragged nowhere. Like me everyone pays a subscription fee, if I dont get one good chapter or even an urge to wait for the next chapter in one month, then what's the point of this subscription??

The point is to support an author beyond what you do when you buy his books. The perks are an extra. There is nothing wrong with waiting for the next release, ignoring this Patreon.

Thats not the point nor is it how the author sells the subscription. It's specifically sold as " pay x amount for additional reading that is x number of days/chapters ahead" . The author is not living up to what he said he would provide. And you are wrong to try and say that this patreon is just about supporting the author financially when it is posted in many places that this is supposed to be a subscription service where you pay to get chapters ahead of other platforms.

Did you read my comment? I said I don’t mind waiting for 1 good chapter in one month. My issue is the chapters being sub par and for subscription fee I’m paying there should be an explanation.

I’m loving the story so far! I was just curious, in most every chapter you have something from someone that either likes or admires ray. Will there ever be something from someone that couldn’t stand him? For example does emblel, sorry about spelling I only have audio, still hate his guts years later? 😁

I’m an alpha/beta reader for a couple of authors and this is very much how rough drafts look. There is A LOT of work between the first draft and what you get at the end. There will be trusted people going over every chapter to weed out anything that’s repetitive, slows the story down, contradicts what’s already written, evaluating character development and plot holes. That’s on top of normal editing. Reading a book at this stage isn’t for everyone. In fact there is at least two series that I wouldn’t read rough if given the opportunity because it would just ruin the story. However I really enjoy watching most books grow and evolve into its final writing

That is a very good point. I didn't even realize, but you are correct. I really enjoy the little paragraphs in the final book where you have an interview or a snippet from a textbook that sets the theme for the upcoming chapter, but they are indeed only from people that are either positive or at least ambivalent towards Rei. While I am not sure how feasible that is, the perspective of someone who hates his guts could be interesting. Apart from that, keep up the good work and don't get discouraged by some people complaining. Those of us who have been here for the last book or even just read the tier description, knew that this would take a while. I won't say that I will necessarily stay subscribed throughout the entirety of it, but that has nothing to do with the quality of your work, more with the monetary side of it all :/ I will happily hop on-and-off, supporting your work in the way I feel I can while getting "more" value for my money by letting some chapters pile up. Sure, I woud love a faster release schedule, but it is your book and your career, the choice should be yours as well. And personally, I would much rather read a better book written by a happy and relaxed author and wait longer for it rather than read a crappy rushjob.

It feels jarring that Ward wouldn't know if it was Gatecracker or Gatesmasher considering it was a plot point before that he was obsessed with the SCTs.

This is my first time following an author's writing process... I've read some of the post where folks are disappointed with the pacing of the writing and I get it, but I gotta tell ya, for me it's like "Christmas" multiple times a year. I get so excited regardless of the "roughness" or "length" of the content. And like a kid, I eagerly await my next 🎁. 😄 Happy writing and take care of your health while you. Creative writing can often be harder on your health than manual labor.
