I grabbed the drinks, walked back, then froze.

She was beside the couch in her wheelchair, preparing to transfer. She leaned forward, shifted her weight, then reached down and lifted her right leg by the shin. Her left leg was already lying limply on the couch.

She looked up and caught me staring like an idiot.

“I’m just making myself more comfortable,” she said with a little smile.

“Oh, yeah. Sure,” I stammered, stepping closer.

I handed her the drink and sat beside her, trying not to overthink every breath.

I nodded, heart racing.“Yeah. Let’s start the movie.”
