There's a lot of people that could be blamed for what happened at the carnival. You can blame Nott for stealing Beau's message stone. You can blame Caleb for trying to steal the beetles. You can blame Beau for attacking Nott & Caleb when she got kicked out (if she didn't, her pearl wouldn't have gotten stolen) or for attacking them when they were stealing the beetles (which is more justified than the first time since they had her message stone which she really needed but she could have tried asking for it back instead of taking it back by force). You can even blame it on the carnival employees themselves (the beetles entered through a hole in the tent, the same hole Gustav and Molly told their employees to fix before the show, which they did not do). It is unfair for them to try to place any blame on Fjord and Jester though since they only killed turned members of the audience and carnival members in order to survive, but Molly's going through it rn so I don't really blame him for casting blanket blame on all involved. In regards to Fjord not misty-stepping out of the bars, perhaps that could have been done in game but narratively he has no clue how most of his powers work at his point. He's misty stepped once on accident and once on purpose but it was assisted by adrenaline to save Jester. He's still slowly figuring out his powers. Also yes, the beginning of this story is quite different from how it went in the campaign, but Vox Machina took some similar liberties especially at the end of S3. I think for MN they just wanted to be able to show more of how each member came to the group which they didn't have at all in VM since they started the series as an established party and even the actual game for MN they began in small groups (like you said, Beau/Fjord/Jester were already travelling together, same with Nott/Caleb and Molly/Yasha). Additionally, most of the stuff with Essek & Ikithon wasn't revealed to the PCs and audience until much later but we're seeing it unfold in real time in the show. So while the origin story has changed, some small jobs/interactions may be altered or removed, and some events may be portrayed out of order from the live show, I think the overall story and major story beats will remain intact.
