I wish there was more Toji backstory...

BTW there is some misunderstandings people have when it comes to maki killing the zenin clan. She didn't kill literally everyone in the zenin clan only their military forces (aside from her mother which people use to deem maki as a villain while conveniently forgetting how her mother treated her like s**t. People forget that just cause maki's mother was a victim of the zenin clan's traditions doesn't mean she's innocent and also can't be a part of the problem).

Regarding what happened to Mai, she actually did the opposite of what you were thinking of in terms of cursed energy. Mai took the small amount of cursed energy that Maki had, which had been holding her back. Doing this allowed Maki's body to fully realize it's Heavenly Restriction potential, the same that Toji had. That's why when they first show that image of Maki that Ogi was envisioning coming from the pit, an outline of Toji is shown as well. The other thing Mai did was create a weapon for Maki, and the creation of that by using her technique, killed her. If you watch the sword that Maki is holding after she awakens from the sequence with Mai, the sword is formed, but there is flickering across the blade a couple times, showing that it was just finishing up being created. The small piece of wheat that Mai handed Maki in the dream was her "handing" Maki the blade she was creating.
