I wonder what dad meant about the rear palace being a place of interest? There's something more to his and Maomao's story!

High ranking courtesans were not just prostitutes, they had a variety of skills such as musical instruments, dancing or being skilled at games or conversation topics. They were basically celebrities that you could hire privately and were expensive and in high demand. Only a few reached that level, similar to how few superstars there are in Hollywood compared to the thousands of small time actors and extras.

Interesting fact an individuals fingerprints have been used to verify an individual's identity or to sign important documents as far back as Ancient China and Babylon. Though in the Western world they didn't become connected to forensics until the 1880s. When a Scottish Doctor working in a Tokyo Hospital named Henry Fauld. Suggested the idea, and even posited the theory that an individual's fingerprints were unique to the person. They weren't used in an actual case in England until the 1890s and not in America until 1902. Also you'll see a lot more about Maomao and her father's relationship as the series goes on. Sorry I haven't been commenting on videos lately. I had surgery Thursday and I've been out of it.

Maomao's pretty shrewd in how she manipulated Lihaku with that offer. Maomao kept quiet about the food taster swapping the dishes out of a sort of empathy, what the food tester did was wrong and it was bullying, but she just thought her mistress didn't like the food, she didn't know about allergies, or that it was poisoned. Ancient Chinese laws were pretty messed up, so if they found out what happened not only could the food tester be executed, but her family and friends, as well as people connected to them through like 5 degrees of separation could have been punished by mutilations, banishments and other things as well, in China's law system back then, your actions don't just represent yourself, but your associates as well, so they're responsible too, it was a terrible system, the lives of non royals held little value.
