I don't have a lot of these... One Piece and Luffy is the one that always stands out for me, and I know I have a few others, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. It seems I tend to many times lean towards characters just off the main, like Killua, Ryuk, Gene Belcher, Fat Buu, etc.

What about you guys? Do you tend to lean towards main characters or others?

Tyrone Wayne

Gintama (Gin), Code Geass (Lelouch), Vinland Saga (Thorfinn), Classroom of the Elite (Ayanokoji), Mushoku Tensei (Rudeus), etc.

William

I dont always like the main character automatically and in some anime, it is not altogether clear that there is only 1 main character. Code Geass stands out to me as one of my favourite anime where the main character is hands down my favourite, although depending on your personal ethics Zero/Lelouch may also be the villain

Raven Yhelka

I feel like I'm a mix depending on the show; sometimes, I might lean toward the main character if I relate to them in some way and other times, I will lean toward others not part of the main cast. Fruits Basket as an example I love all the characters, both main and recurring, but having to choose it would be Kyo as my favorite overall character. In Naruto, i think I preferred like Recurring characters like Neiji because i hated him at first but grew to love him

Fritz

The Rose of Versailles. The protagonist was so interesting that most of the other characters seemed to care more about them than the literal French revolution. Lady Oscar is such a great character that even though she wasn't really intended to be the main character of the manga people wrote in and asked for more of the focus to be on her and so by the time the anime was made she was the protagonist.

Myles

Breaking Bad for me, Walter White is an incredible character! And Vinland saga is close with Thorfinn but Askeladd is still my favorite in that show

Ian McBride

Okabe from Steins Gate, Lelouch from Code Geass.

J Johnson

Alucard from Hellsing, both abridged and original version. Guts from Berserk.

Jarrod Atkins

YuYuHakusho! I love Yusuke's shit talking. Even when he's getting the shit kicked out of him, he still has a one liner or two that kills me every time.

Alpha Maeko

Maomao from Apothecary Diaries. She is best character and best girl.

V

At the top of my head id say Ryner Lute from the legendary of the legendary heroes. I can get behind a guy who has seen the worst of this world but just wants to live in a kingdom of napping.

Honestly, there a quite few shows where the main character is my absolute number 1 favourite. Some include Lelouch, Guts, Ayanokoji (COTE), Sakuta (bunny girl), Kaiji, Hachiman (Oregairu), Odokawa, and Kazuma (Konosuba), Thorfinn (Vinland Saga), Tsukimoto (Ping Pong: The Animation) and Okabe (Steins;Gate). Luffy and Law are a close second and third behind Sanji in One Piece. As for live action shows, funnily enough Walt was my favourite, but after watching Better Call Saul, Saul surpassed him as being my favourite, although he was already my number two when watching BB. Also, the main character from the show “Snowfall”, Franklin Saint, is not only my favourite character from the show, but probably my favourite tv show character in general.

Rigid Rat

Yu Yu Hakusho because Yusuke. Enough said

Miasimon

One Piece, obviously. But then there's Kaiju No. 8, Bleach, Naruto, and So I'm A Spider, So What. Edit: Forgot Overlord, somehow.

TheTeeke

Batman in most things he is in. Spike from Cowboy Bebop. Samurai Champloo I like Jin and Mugen equally if that counts. Luffy is close, but I just like others more. Luffy is the most likeable primary protagonist for me.

Radiodanoo

Nothing beats a really competent and intelligent villain. One that poses a significant challenge to the hero(s). It magnifies the protagonist when they defeat powerful foes. And intelligently written characters where the writers put in the time and effort to make it good... oh man is it awesome

Joel Miller

Yusei Fudo from Yugioh 5D’s, Yugi from Yugioh, Batman because he’s freaking Batman, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka in Star Wars The Clone Wars

Tacosareneat

Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke is fucking hilarious and badass lol 👌🏼

My answer as well lol 👌🏼. Imo best English dub of all time. Its not just the voices themselves that were great, they captured the personality of the characters so well and the translations were perfect.

Nelson

Kazuma from Kaze no Stigma

Hammerface1

Yu Yu Hakusho Kurama and Yusuke

V_VMat

Before reading the comments only one that came to my mind was Ichigo from Bleach and even that is close call between him and Kenpachi... Then I saw Alucard and he is clearly my favorite from Hellsing. Edit. After checking MAL for some inspiration/refreshers; Spike from Cowboy Bebop and Onizuka from GTO.

GenesicKaiser

Getter Robo: Ryoma Nagare, GaoGaiGar: Gai Shishioh, Lyrical Nanoha: Nanoha Takamachi, Mobile Suit Gundam: Amuro Ray, Captain Harlock: Captain Harlock

Miklar Sihn

I mean, we have Guts from Berserk, he gets so well fleshed out that i really can't put anyone up against him in his show. Thorfinn in Vinland Saga has the same deal. Code Geass is close, but i would give it to Lulu. Steins;Gate also ends up going to Okabe. Darker Than Black also ends up being Hiei, though that is mostly because awesome stuff happens around him. It is kinda hit by not focusing enough on the characters and more on the story... It is also really close with several of the antagonists being pretty fun. Stargate, i am all in on O'Neil, though Hammond and Teal'C hold my second place. Star Trek TNG has Piccard, who might be the best Trek captain. He mostly stays onboard and commands, he tends to work within the rules while bending them rather than breaking them, he was somehow an insane badass in school with a literal hole in his heart from when he got stabbed through it and he still has several character issues like being entirely unable to handle children.

Mason Brinkman

Rick is absolutely my favorite main character that comes to mind first.

Daniel Gonzalez

I'm the opposite its rare where the introductory character we meet or main isn't my favorite like Yusuke, Mikazuki, Mob , Gon was my favorite for most of HunterxHunter then Killua passed him at the final push hell I even like Jesus Yamato (which reminds me I still need to see that movie)

Temperistic

My only one might be Attack on Titan

Augustus

Kill la Kill, The Great Jahy Won't Be Defeated, and Gabriel Dropout comes to the top of my head.
