The 7 EP's of Mazinkaiser were excellent, but Mazinkaiser vs Ankoku Daishogun was like Mazinger Z vs Ankoku Daishogun, the film it's a remake of, like Mazinkaiser is a remake of Mazinger Z; in that it had more of darker, heavier story compared to the series. But looking back, I was suprised at how gory it is. The final fight with Mazinkaiser is iconic, pretty much half the reason fans have checked it out as it's on Youtube, even myself, I knew of the final fight for years, but hadn't truly watched Mazinkaiser or this movie in full until Covid.

It's really satisfying among the first two enemies Kaiser takes out first with Turbo Smasher Punch and Koushiryoku Beam. They gave Mazinger so much shit in the last ep of Mazinger Z and Mazinger vs Ankoku Daishogun. And also, looking back and seeing how many people die, when Mazinkaiser completely decimates them, it was really cathartic.

I just noticed, at one point when they are in Paris, there is a painting of Grendizer done. A nice nod to the fact that Grendizer was more popular oversees like Italy, the Middle East, and especially Paris. It actually aired first before Mazinger Z, which apparently caused French viewers to write of Mazinger as a shittier copy of Grendizer since Kouji was a sidekick in Grendizer, but under an alias.
