As an artist I can kind of get what Mateo is saying, when you get artist block you can get into a rut and it can be hard to get out of it. I actually really like the idea of a Crystal Onix, Onix's are usually made of stone, so having one that's pure crystal is a simple change, but a neat visual, it's a shame they never added the idea to the games, a giant Crystal rock snake would be cool. So besides Togepi, Marill is one of the first Gen 2 Pokemon we've met in the anime, Gen 2 (Pokemon Gold & Silver) being the second generation of Pokemon Games, Marill is... more or less Gen 2's equivalent to Pikachu, a cute mouse you can find relatively early on in the games.

Marill's resemblance to Pikachu, plus the fact that he appeared in the show / promotional art before the 2nd Gen games came out also led a lot of people to think he was some kind of hidden evolution to Pikachu, which spawned 1000 schoolyard rumours about how to get him in the first games. Beat the game 999 times, play every day for a year straight... you can't say kids don't have a good imagination.
