Tohru's whole existence is putting the needs and desires of others above her own! I hope it works out well for her in every instance!

Tohru really is one of the most selfless people you will meet in any anime show for sure, but I think when people in this show try to rag on her, what's about that is that she isn't selfish enough for her own desires. They don't try to look at the bigger picture. Look at what she's been through in 15 years of life; her dad died when she was so young she barely has any memories of him. Then loses her mom in a car accident, has an emotionally abusive family, besides grandpa. Someone who is already naturally a sweet person, how do they cope. As we see with Tohru, we're seeing someone who puts others before her own feelings because then she would be forced to deal with some of the negative feelings I think she subconsciously doesn't want to deal with, like we see how hard she's holding onto her mother, almost like she's still in the denial stage of her passing and doesn't want to move forward while still carrying their memory. That's why i love her character such a sweet genuine person, but you can still see there's stuff she's still struggling with that she doesn't want to deal with, which makes it so much easier for her to be able to be so empathic to other and help them besides making her happy, it keeps her distracted from her own feelings.
