WOW! The twists, turns and redirections in this story were perfectly executed! Then, to have Otis the Town Drunk do that at the end was stunning!

This is by far the best episode of season 1 for me, Harris Yulin does an amazing job as Marritza and his performance basically becomes the blueprints for the performance of all Cardassians going forward, their grandiose speeches, their arrogance, it just makes them so memorable and fun, they are one of Star Trek's best species to me. There's so much complexity to his role in both the writing and acting, he plays such a great hateable villain that it just catches you so off guard when the truth comes out, then you just feel nothing but sympathy for the poor guy... he's a good man punishing himself for the crimes of his people, and not being brave enough to stand against them during the occupation, and as you can see, it does stick with Kira and forces her to rethink her own biases. The twists and turns are just fantastical as well done, it's just as good to see on a rewatch because you catch so many of the little hints Marritza accidentally gives when he slips up. Cardassians tend to hide the truth in a lie, so you catch so much of how he actually feels about himself when he's pretending to be Darhe'el speaking about Marritza and it's just so sad. The bitter note they leave the episode on just works so well, I think if Marritza lived in the end it would still be an excellent episode, but ending on his death gives the episode just so much more impact..

You might recall Harris Yulin as the angry judge in "Ghostbusters 2". "And the verdict was always the same -- Guilty."

What an incredible episode, it's one of my favourites. Kira's development here is also amazing. Early on in the story her viewpoint comes down to one line from her "As far as I'm concerned if he was at Gallitep he is guilty, they're all guilty." And by the end of the episode she has totally rejected that position and has changed to the extent that she actually feels sympathy for a Cardassian who was at Gallitep.

This tragic tale is considered to be one of the best episodes.

One of my favorites and definitely the best of season one. Can't wait to watch it with you.
