Okay, this was just a kinda weak excuse to have May and Ash have at it, so let's see whose plot armor prevails!

So what happened near the end there, with Blaze and Overgrow is that starting from this gen onwards they gave pokemon Abilities, and from now on every starter has the main ability of Blaze for the fire starters, Overgrow for the grass starters and Torrent for the water starters, which when the pokemons health is below ⅓ of the max the power of their corresponding type attacks gets increased by 50%. And every starter from now on gets those as the main ability.
