"We're Italian and you're their son; you'll always be more important." That's accurate, though contrary to what Meadow is trying to get across, him being more important to them is part of what has led him to this point of existential crisis. AJ was given preferential treatment and bailed out of every single situation he landed himself in. He was taught all of these rules by his parents, yet his dad is a criminal and his mom lives off of Tony's success guilt free. The contradiction made him question what good are rules if my parents break them and are as successful as they are? He can't commit to what Tony does because his morality compass does not allow him to cross those lines. Yet despite all of this. AJ IS SMART. If he applied himself, he would be successful. Yet, he chooses not to be. AJ is a sad, pathetic little man who deserves to be pitied.

Despite everything, when it comes to his kids Tony always tries his best as an imperfect human. I can respect that much.

I appreciate your take on this, because I've always felt the same way. You do what you can as a parent, but if the person can't even meet you far enough to understand the value of their own life, then, well, I don't see much of a reason to keep trying beyond that.
