THE SUB vs. DUB DEBATE (Patreon)

As many of you saw, we just had a (now resolved) debate about sub vs. dub on a specific series; Kill la Kill. It occurs to me that the debate is largely my fault, as I don't think I ever thought to lay out for you guys how I go about choosing which one we do.

Outside of "One Piece", I really have no preference of sub vs. dub. (I love Luffy's Japanese voice, which is the only reason I have a preference there.) So, because of my lack of preference, I try to just kinda mix things up between the two, unless you guys point out an issue with one or the other to me, such as a dub not being complete and we'd have to switch over or something like that.

Going forward, I'll do my best to try and keep it in variety here, as we have a number of people on both sides. This is one thing I don't put to a poll on each vid, simply because I don't think it would be fair. I don't know if we have more of one side than the other, but if we do, the votes would likely always go that same way, leaving some people always on the outside, looking in.

As always, as we start a new series, please feel free to let me know if there are any technical issues with either sub or dub, and on some rare occasions, We've had conversations about some series where even proponents of one type will admit that the other type is superior in that instance. I'll be ever vigilant about that fact, as well.

I LOVE our community atmosphere here - even when we just had this disagreement, it was all worked out quickly - and I don't want to allow anything to jeopardize that, by making someone feel as if they aren't getting a fair voice in things.  :-)

Oh, and I should also mention that - in the titty animes - sometimes only one or the other is uncensored. I will ALWAYS be going with the uncensored version because...TITTIES!

Darkslifer#27

Oh so thats resolved now? Good. Now can we please put the goosh cannon away its making me nervous

Eric Chou

Personally, I think dub is a good option for you specifically because obviously you prefer to just listen rather than read the whole episode. Also, the dub really isn't bad at all. It's definitely one of the better ones out there. For me, I nearly always pick sub for the anime I watch unless the dub is objectively better. I think you should go dub.

Bryan Burke

The only anime dub I have a problem with being god awful is Attack on Titan. Outside of that I dont usually care. Although for authenticity I usually watch Japanese

The sub vs dub debates annoy me tbh, just watch what you enjoy I get the sense people always have to complain if someone else is searching it in different languages,I'm not gonna spark another debate lol,I'm just saying watch what YOU enjoy

Anonymous

Obviously uncensored is Best, also I’m not grasping what your saying (feelin tiered) so your gonna see both sides of the argument and choose which is best based on people or try to keep things an equal amount of sub/dub?

Matt Smith

Dubs are usually made uncensored then censored by the networks they are put on.

No, I'm just saying that I'll try to keep mixing them in, but if there is a specific issue with one or the other on a given series, we will, of course, utilize whichever one doesn't have the issue. :-)

I am honestly neutral in the dub Vs sub in anime because for some people, including me, some anime are better in dub while others are better in sub. One example for me is overlord and the series that's coming after kill la kill sekirei (I know you haven't watched overlord yet but I'm using it as an example) I love love love the English dub better than the sub and don't get me wrong but I feel more feelings from the dub than the sub in at least this two series. But the same can be said for the latter one current example was monster musume where people here said that the sub was better than the dub because they felt it more real from the voice actors and I agree with that. It all depends on what people prefer either by just watching it and hearing it from the dub or reading it and watching it at the same time (and we don't complain because most of us have watched anime in sub version for a while now)

CaseOPictures

I personally always go with dub, I don’t dislike the sub or think it sounds bad, I just prefer hearing it in english instead of reading it. I rarely hear a dub I really dislike. I think it generally gets a bad wrap. I think people like to defend the one they prefer even if they don’t know the other one too well. People often think the other sounds weird to them which is because they are used to different voices in a different language.

That's actually what makes it kinda tough for me. If I had a preference (outside of ONE PIECE) I would let everyone know and tell them I'd be doing that style unless there's a reason not to. The thing is, though, I honestly don't have a preference; I find it easy to get used to either Japanese or English voices, and I've gotten to where the reading the text isn't distracting to me at all... One of those rare times where NOT having a preference makes things more difficult for me. :-D

I hadn't checked yet to see if Sekirei was available in both dub and sub, but since it is, that one will probably be dub, since Kill la Kill was sub. :-)

I've wondered why it seems that the dubs are uncensored. Is it for the same reason that Japanese porn has to be censored?

DxShadow

Im 100% sub but ill watch you react to dub i dont care lol

Anonymous

I think for kill la kill is better in dub but for all other anime i prefer sub

King Black

Confused Kill La Kill Dub is Uncensored

Christopher Johnson

I just like dub better because you can react more, you don't have to worry about keeping up with reading.

I didn’t think there was a difference in censorship between the two... Was I given wrong information?

Now Cutis you musn't know this since you made this Post so late in the game but one you go to us and ask which we should do, (sub or dub) your basically asking us to try and convince you which one you should do which means it's pretty much inevitable (even if you don't mean for it to happen) for a Sub vs Dub debate to pop up. Some of them are small but a few of them are much larger, which im guessing is what happened with Kill La Kill which is why your making this post. I'm not saying that you should NOT ask us if you should do Sub or Dub but to go forward knowing that arguing is inevitable and you should choose your words carefully like instead of saying "Hey Guy's which one should we do?" you say, "Are there any technical problems with going with Sub or Dub like bad censorship or it's not fully dubbed yet." Now, im not saying you don't know this just that i wanted to make sure you know. Personally i like the Dub since i find it a little easier for me but you do what you wanna do.

I thought that might be the case, too, but then I discovered that the text is displayed in big enough chunks that I read it faster than they say it, leaving even more time for reaction. 😊

Some dubs are actually better, but mostly they're worse. Examples of anime that I feel should be watched Dubbed are DBZ, FMA and Death Note.

THE GOOSH!
>>15269233

I’m not following you at all, as I specifically said I wouldn’t be taking polls on sub vs. dub, only taking advice on issues with one or the other... Didn’t you just recommend that I do exactly what I said I was gonna do?... You’re aware that the debate on Kill la Kill came up organically, without me asking for opinions, right?

Anonymous

Don't care if it's sub or dub as long as we rub.

Anonymous

I watch every anime subbed, but i don't mind watching you react to a dub so I'm indifferent about it

King Black

I feel a little better knowing Sekirei will be in dub harem dubs are usually fun but I would have preferred Prison School sub since the dub wasn't that good it was alright Kill La Kill Dub then Sekirei sub

Anonymous

use dub for killa kill start over from episode 1 with dub

Matsumoto Erkin

dub is fine for most of the series except attack on titan .On AOT dub they even dubbed the roar of the titans...... and there are a lot of changes in the script. Yet ,for some reason,I felt like the dub of "FMAB" and "Death note " feels more suits the characters

Anonymous

for me it depends on the show. I prefer the sub most of the time since the Japanese tend to put more emotion into it in my opinion. but there are some 5 star dubbings like fullmetal and cowboy bebop.

Charlie baker

klk is a definite dub,its just more entertaining for funny dialogue and innuendos for that show

Anonymous

For me it depends on the series. Most of the time I watch dub but for mha and one punch man I watched the sub

Meelog Malterion

Sub and Dub is case by case theres a new anime called "How not to Summon a Demon King" its sorta similar to Overlord(not really)but I thought would be awesome Dubbed but the Dub Mc's voice isnt really deep enough and some scenes sound like they come out of an Abridged...Attack on Titan is another I preferred in Sub but got used to the Dub....and Dbz's Subs not so great for me the readings fine but Goku Gohan and Goten are all Voiced by one old Lady the National Treasure that she may be to Japanese people she just aint for me.....and they Butchered Natsu's Catchphrase in Fairy Tail....

Anonymous

i mostly prefer the sub but i consider the full metal alchemist brotherhood dub superior to the sub ,and i like naruto both sub and dub

Anonymous

Sub all the way baby. In most cases lol

THE GOOSH!
>>15271782

I won't be starting over. It's crazy to react to a video I've already reacted to. Plus, I'm 5 episodes into the series already. Besides, as you can see, the sub over dub is not a unanimous thing among the crew here.

Anonymous

Is it wrong that my first thought was sub vs dom?

Anonymous

Well whatever you do I am watching I would stick to sub for one piece due to the dub not translating well at times for that series

R_K41

Watch it subbed or raw, that's the way it was meant to be watched.

Anonymous

Haha the One Piece Dub is hilarious, Luffy’s english voice actor is fantastic but altogether it’s a quality job either sub or dub (although I prefer the voice of Zoro in English) . Can’t fucking stand the dub of HXH

THE GOOSH!
>>15284973

I just love the way Luffy says his own name in the sub. I know that's kind of a dopey reason for a preference, but I really enjoy that voice. :-)

Sean OBrien

The HunterXHunter dub is hot garbage. Please stick to the sub, the voice actors are amazing.

Slyze

What I typically do is try an episode in dub or sub first, then try the alternative the next one & decide which one I like better

Dallas Winston

Besides Fullmetal alchemist The only other show that you have to watch in dub is yuyu hakusho
