Yeah only the Dutch were allowed to trade in Japan in one spot for a LONG time since Japan was a isonlaionits country. THey traded plants, science, tech, and ideas with japan but weren't allowed to wander outside the one or two port towns. So he is right that Japan eventually opened up the country which is nice.

Is that a reverse blade sword hanging? I bought one as a gift and it looks exactly like it.

While Japan does have a history of accepting homosexuality this episode kind of oversimplifies it. (Probably because Jouji doesn't really understand the intricacies of it and we're getting the information from his point of view). Yes Japanese men were allowed to engage in homosexual activity. But there were certain rules to what was socially acceptable. For example they were still expected to marry a woman and leave behind an heir. Duty to the family line above all. Also relationships between Samurai were often of a weird cross between similar practices between Warriors of Sparta and the Sacred Banders of Thebes and a pederastic relationship between a teacher and student. Hell Oda Nobunaga (considered by many to be the architect of the reunification of Japan after the 100 year war of the Sengoku period) kept the company of a 17 year old named Mori Ranmaru. Moving onto another subject Nagasaki was the centre of trade for the Portuguese back when they were still allowed to trade with the Japanese. Before the Tokugawa Shogunate closed the country and gave the trade monopoly to the Dutch. It was also a centre of Catholicism in the country while they were there. Until it was outlawed along with the Portuguese. Catholicism was still practiced on pain of death in secret. If I had to wager? I think the Sunflower Samurai may be one of these secret Catholics. Based on Jouji's reaction to the skull. Though I don't recall any skull symbols in Catholicism (and I'd know I have eleven years of Catholic school to back that up) maybe it's a local symbol? Also it was a nice touch giving the Dutchmen clogs. My grandfather had a pair just like those from the old country.

The place on the map in the beginning, looked like a butt, and they stopped on the left cheek.
