You see freedom of religion was never a thing in Japan. So when some Christians came to Japan to the south many people liked the idea of christ and his teachings. But when the Emperor who was supposed to basically be followed like a deity on earth and the shogunate heard about people becoming Christians it was outlawed and was punished serverly. Their was even a small war / battle with the Christian japanese fighting for freedom it was quickly snuffed out. So putting a stone of Jesus and making people step on it was a way to see of they were Christian. That old woman was saying her last prayer while taken away ect. Also the the biggest screw u was that priest guy was japanese and wasn't even Christian. So it wasn't like someone just had the wrong views on the teachings ect. 100% using people scam

For a scam involving Christians, one involving black market firearms is honestly pretty topical. Giving that the same Portuguese who introduced Catholicism to Japan. (Among them Francisco Xavier). Also introduced the Japanese to firearms. The Japanese quickly started making their own muskets copied from the ones they bought from the Portuguese. And soon surpassed Europe in terms of gun ownership (per capita) as well as tactical use of them. Once the Sengoku period ended the first order of business quickly became suppressing who could own guns and swords. In order to prevent rebellion against the Tokugawa government. Honestly that feudal lord they were dealing with was probably hoping to start a rebellion with those guns they were making for him.
