Yup, Zod was looking at what was going on and chose to throw guts his sword. It is not doing the job for guts or anything, but giving guts a chance.

It is worth mentioning that the Tudor army could still have either won or atleast killed off everyone outside the castle. The only reason the hawks won was low morale.

Queen-whore is an apt name for her. In the Manga her marriage to the King was entirely political. He's either too busy pining over his dead first wife or conducting the war. So what did she do? Slept with the King's brother. That's right, Urethra. The nobleman that Griffith ordered Guts to kill. Now she's looking for revenge.

Zodd is a very interesting character, it's hard to tell what his motives are

I've always thought that Zodd threw Guts his sword because Guts earned his respect. To paraphrase, he said it was over a hundred years since anyone had withstood a single strike from him, and much longer since someone was able to actually HURT him. Guts impressed him, which means now his death must be glorious (to honor such a man, etc.). And death by equipment failure—apparently—doesn't count.
