Envys excuse seemed to be that he'd been away and that what happened before was a farce by other people or the devil while he was gone. Of course, all people won't believe such an excuse but those desperate enough😓 Will probably swallow anything that lets them keep believing in what they have been

They are actually better placed to believe him than that. Remember that they all believe in the devil and his works deeply, while not really understanding Alchemy. Compounding that is the argument that Edward made against bringing things back to life with Alchemy, which is very close to the totality of what the people know of the limitations of Alchemy. So for what little the people know he has just disproven that he uses Alchemy and he has shown that he seemingly wasnt there when evil had control, making him good. That will get more than just the most desperate. It is more about depth of belief now and the real preacher did really well at ensuring that.
