I'm definitely in for this! The backstory of the Chief and Crazy Old Hermit is fascinating to me!

And thus starts one of the best flashbacks in anime/manga.

Ploppy Wasabi

Dankichi, the guy in the flashback eating the bowl of rice, is the same trainer who now trains Volg in America and trained the doctor with the swallow punch. He was said to be more skillfull than kamogawa and nekota but he had a glass jaw so he couldn't keep up with them. What's even crazier is the American Soldier's right hand man's (the translator) name is "Miguel", the same Miguel that was Bryan Hawk's trainer/Manager! Really fun lore of how they connect even the side characters together. I didn't catch on to that when I first watched this series.

Hopefully you decide to eventually pick up reading the manga because the series just gets only better. I am honestly shocked at how their isn’t a week to week or a seasonal anime adaptation of this show. There’s enough content to do a few hundred episodes. Currently there’s almost 1400 chapters, this takes episode place somewhere around the 500-600 mark in the manga.

I second this, even if he only reads a couple chapters a week on the side I think he would really enjoy it. There are some incredible fights and story choices still to come, and the story is probably barely half over (at 1340 chapters 😂). It’s so saddening there’s still no word on season 4 but there’s still some hope I think, it’s been so consistently successful for over 30 years. But I’ve decided, if I ever get rich I’m buying the tv rights and funding an adaptation myself
