I maintain the reason the serious arcs in Gintama work so well is because we've spent so much time with the characters in the comedy episodes. We've seen them being themselves so it matters to us more when they're in crisis. That's how we've formed a connection with characters like Gin or Kagura, even having gotten next to nothing in regards to their backstories up to this point
