Hey guys, this is the patreon version, you may prefer to watch this as I may have to distort/cut clips for YouTube.

Any feedback on explanations is welcome, as this is mostly voiceover I can re-record parts if necessary!

it would be really good to see you dismantle some of the major Bryan Caplan's pro-capitalist arguments. Bryan recently is writing a book called "Unbeatable" in which he argues for libertarian capitalism again(after all the Milton Friedman, Hayek, etc. stuff and neoliberal dystopia we are in) . Bryan is very influential libertarian capitalist.

It can't JUST be fossil fuels, can it? Weren't there appreciable productivity gains just from land working and reorganization (like you talk about), before fossil fuels got involved? But I do wonder what percent of overall growth would be missing without fossils... my random guess is 90%. On the other hand, I wonder what a world looks like where fossil fuel usage was developed but without capitalism.

Unlearning Economics

There were, but bear in mind growth was really low in these early stages, probably barely discernible from generation to generation. Only with the Industrial Revolution did it really start to be noticeable to people on the ground. Andreas Malm talks a lot about water power vs steam power and how the former may have been more effective than the latter, so it could be energy rather than fossil fuels per se. Then there’s the question of whether steam was chosen because capitalism bad, which Malm seems to answer in the affirmative!
