AYI feel obliged to write a quick extra update as a result of the video not being out yet.The rendering times are quite the bomb this time around. I've been doing my best to minimize the time the video has to spend rendering without hampering the quality, but it will unfortunately still be a while before I can release it due to the immense time the video will take to finish rendering. The estimated 31 hours you see up above in the picture? That's for just a few minutes of footage, while the video in its entirety is just over 50 minutes long. So, yeah, rendering purgatory has been fully engaged.I SWEAR, this time, it'll be the last ridiculously long video I am making in at least, like, two years, or something. I am not allowing us to have this much fun with a script anymore. It is illegal.

You know there exist computers where you can have more than one CPU, having that would probably help. Do the fans cry bloody murder on your machine when you render btw?

Alfabusa (Ogre Poppenang)

They do not! The computers run just fine even while rendering, able to handle lesser tasks simultaneously like allowing me to edit subtitles, which is a boon. I'm not great with hardware knowledge, but I know my newest computer got 20 different CPUs running, with AE using about 8 of them if I remember correctly, the RAM allocated between them for multiprocessing.

Here’s an idea: why not make the Patreon exclusive previews avaiable to the public in situations like this as a sort of way to get something out in the mean time, while hyping up the main event?

RoseEmpress

To be honest, I'm just looking forward to it. Render is a bitch and takes time. But there shall be gloriousnessness after

Armo

I would lend computational power if I could. I have the computer, but no way to get it to help you. Sadface. Can’t wait for the video!

ChaosSpartan575

Quality takes time, but it is worth the wait.

GUYFUN

I imagine alfa in a shed in the cold wastelands of sweden editing while karl haunts the night.

Matihood

In other words: estimated time remaining: less than a month. I can wait since I know it's going to be a blast.

Robertartin

Can you at least give us a number for how much total render time you think is left?

Callan Graham

not allowed Well at least for a while Im Sure you can have fun With the script in a shorter copacity

Psychopath

20 different CPUs on one motherboard?

Jack Ponder

I bet Karl spends most of his nights haunting anyhow, but good imagery all the same

PyroticNapalm

Nice, hope rendering purgatory isn't to hellish and can't wait for the masterpiece.

Trevor Bond

PSH! You take all the time you need, dude. I can afford to wait for awesomeness. Heck I'm expecting you to someday go full Peter Jackson on something and turn a 10 minute idea into a 3 part series of feature length works.... and it'll be awesome.

Adam Alexander

You take your time, man, quality matters more. If you were delaying without saying anything, that would be one thing, but anyone who knows this game knows rendering is a monster.

Jeremy Jorgensen

I'm not paying every month to get angry about you not making a video every month. I am helping because when you do make videos, they are very good. So take your time, let it render, and please keep us updated because updates are nice!

Meep Changeling

It's taking almost 2 days for you to render a bit of footage of 2d artwork being warped and moving about?! Bruh, what are you rendering on? A gen 1 i5? I think we need to pool some money and get you a nice workstation. I've got some old 1050s I could donate. Gently used.

Meep Changeling

That's not what he meant. You're thinking of CPU cores which are the little sub processors inside a CPU. Unless of course your "computer" is a series of large towers running along a wall of your house... In which case, damn son, nice super computer! I'm also going to say it's likely you are still mistaken. While 20 core CPUs do exist, they are all in the 4,000 USD price range and are intended for use in large servers. It's not impossible you have one of those, but the most powerful consumer grade chips currently are the Intel i9 9900k and AMD Ryzen 7 2700x which are 8 core. Regardless of what CPU you have... if you are using the CPU to render, and have a GPU in your machine, your software almost certainly has a button in it which will tell it to render using the GPU instead of the CPU. This will be much, much, much faster. If you tell me which GPU you have and which program you render in, I can find out how to get that done :3

Psychopath

I was specifically referring to the server grade CPUs, yes, of which you can have two on a single motherboard. They are ridiculously priced sure, but I was mostly just ribbing. If he really meant 20 cores [and not threads], that would still mean he's already on server grade hardware anyway. Being that as it may, the fact AE can only multithread on 8 physical [or virtual] cores seems like a strangely arbitrary limit for Adobe since most professional editors will absolutely use server grade hardware for rendering, particularly with their software. You'd think that'd be optimized to only use a certain upper limit in accordance to the total amount of cores/threads available on the machine and not a fixed limit. I wonder if there's not a common method of jailbreaking it to go above 8 the way you can with ram, or if you'd have to rebuild the software architecture to make it do that. I also believe that rendering with the GPU to get a faster render speed is also a myth, I've seen people run rendering tests using a GPU [1080Ti] and it was around the same level of efficiency as just rendering with the CPU.

Tarorc79

What would the cost for a rig that could render faster be ?

Alfabusa (Ogre Poppenang)

It's haaaard for me to do that at the moment due to the video being split up into several different parts, each rendered separately, so the program itself cannot give a good estimation.

Alfabusa (Ogre Poppenang)

Oh jeez, I mean, I'd hope and pray it would be, I just hope it can actually be justified as a 33 part series and not suffer the dreaded script bloat.

Alfabusa (Ogre Poppenang)

Thank you! And yeah, rendering times are often a subtle, devious foe who only appears after you think you've already won the game.

Alfabusa (Ogre Poppenang)

It's a biiiit more than just 2d artwork being warped and moved about, unfortunately. The images themselves are often high resolution and are all pre-comps lost in a sea of other pre-comps. In addition, we have a whole slew of effects, everything from colour correction to the puppet tool to particle effects... It's a whole thing. I already got two computers I got put together specifically to be effective editing machines and yet it isn't quite enough to make rendering a project like this a speedy process.

Robertartin

Considering that each part is about thirty hours, could you tell us how many parts maybe?

hargas

i mean if creating the episode itselft takes 5 months, then the 31 hour rendering time is negligible to say the least.

Robertartin

That was for about five minutes.

Trevor Bond

The benefit to YOUR work is you can always justify adding new characters in to make fun of, owing to the nature of the universe you play in lol!

msills19

50/3 =16.666, 16.666(31 hours) = 516.666, 516.66667/24 = 21.52 days. It may take 21 to 22 days to render. Is my math correct? If so, I can wait a month.

GUYFUN

It's better than getting stonewalled for a few months. We have little power on when the content comes out, but at least this way we have some inclination.

My loincloth is bursting with anticipation
