I skipped to the end to watch your review first, because you looked disappointed in the thumbnail 😅 I think I just psyched myself out haha. glad you enjoyed it! next episode is a SLAPPER

Leo Cap

oh and yes, Ian McNeice did a PHENOMENAL job as Churchill-- from what I understand about him from my British dad. at least the mannerisms and speech. this whole "they didn't portray any part of the occupation of India in this 40 minute science fiction episode about robot aliens" is frankly a bit of a silly complaint (WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD...) for the Brits who feel "uncomfortable" seeing Churchill portrayed positively, that's exactly how I feel about Nixon in The Impossible Astronaut -- in any other Nixon story i'd like to see more historical accuracy, but they're frankly just an accessory in these episodes so I don't mind

Azmat Mahmood

Probably not a good idea to post another negative comment after last week, but this is going to be the last Doctor Who episode posted before my subscription expires so fuck it!😂 Yeah, I don't like this episode either. It makes no sense that the progenitor wouldn't recognise those Daleks. They were made from Davros' DNA, you can't get more "pure Dalek" than that! I think this episode was trying to tie into 80s Who with the different Dalek factions. That was a major storyline for the Daleks back in the 80s with the Imperials, who served Davros and the renegades, who broke away because they saw the Daleks that were serving Davros as "impure" and not true Daleks. It doesn't make sense to bring back that story element here though because it comes totally out of nowhere Not only had we not seen anything to do with that since classic Who ended, the Daleks were also presented as a united force against the Time Lords during the Time War. It feels clunky and forced and it's clearly just an excuse to have the Daleks concoct this devious plan around the Doctor. Speaking of their plan, it relies on the Doctor testifying that he’s the Doctor and they’re the Daleks, which he foolishly and conveniently does. Come on, he literally says declaratively “I am the Doctor and you are the Daleks”. Who talks like that? Having characters talk and behave like idiots so that the plot can advance is very annoying, it’s even worse when the plot doesn’t even make sense. it's just poor writing and wasn't thought through well enough. That’s the case with the rest of the Dalek plot too, which is riffing on a beloved classic Who story from the 60s (2nd Doctor’s era), The Power of the Daleks. Daleks were pretending to be subservient in that story as well, but what made it work so well there is the slow build up of suspense and tension over the course of its six 25 minute episodes. It isn’t until the end of the fifth episode that the Daleks finally break out of their act and execute their plan and the final sixth episode is a bloodbath. This episode has the Daleks reveal their plan about 15 minutes in and then they all simply run away at the end. It feels so cheap and half assed. How could I forget to mention the new and "improved" Dalek design. Safe to say it caused an uproar in the fan community! Even if you are going to introduce a new design like that, why not have them actually make a big impact?! How many people did they actually kill? One or two people? Not enough, that's for sure! They’re even fooled by a Jammie Dodger at one point, making them look even more inept.🤦 Another bothersome element of this episode is the white washing of Winston Churchill and presenting him as a friend of the Doctor. Considering all the horrible stuff Churchill did during his time as PM, this is pretty uncomfortable. The spitfires going into space is absolutely ridiculous and stretches the bounds of credibility too far even in a show like this. The power of love resolution for the bomb was the laziest and most hokey plot resolution in the show so far. The over sentimentality of this era really aggravates me because unlike the previous era, the emotions aren’t earned. It would've made slightly more sense if that guy was a human who had been turned into a robot. However, that wasn't the case. He was always a robot. This whole episode just felt rushed and unsatisfying. To say this wasn’t a good showing for the Daleks would be an understatement, it’s quite easily the worst story for them since the show came back.

MightyBrotherX

Totally forgot about the Power Rangers Daleks 🤣

Leguś

"Go, go Dalek Rangers!" The colors were meant to represent Dalek ranks. Also, Doctor's tantrum on them is like dealing with cockroaches. You think it's gone but it comes back.

Adinium

It turned to HD with Planet of the Dead, so a few episodes before Series 5

Drake

i am always feel rly uncomfortable about the british glorification of chruchill who is in the end at fault for millions of indians who died because he didnt care about them and took all their food away for his own soldiers letting millions starve and laughing about ghandi ...

Darren Withers

My favourite retort ever comes from Winston Churchill. Lady Nancy Astor: Winston, if you were my husband, I'd poison your tea. Churchill: Nancy, if I were your husband, I'd drink it.

funnylilgalreacts

Omg my husband loves the power rangers I should show him this then

funnylilgalreacts

I had no idea. Teachings of Churchill are not very broad in the US.

Rester

Speaking as a Brit, I get the same discomfort. He was not a great guy. People just sort of see him as a mirror to Hitler, and anyone looks good in that frame.

Azmat Mahmood

No need. Glad you enjoyed it, despite my own opinions on it, but this isn't exactly a well liked episode in the fandom.

Azmat Mahmood

Don't put the poor guy through this terrible episode Angela, pease!🤣

Michele Jean

That reaction and analysis of the episode and the era in which it took place. I’m not sure if anyone ever commented on this before, but in the 60s when the Daleks were created, they were a representation of the nazis. There’s a whole documentary about the daleks that’s very fascinating. That being said, the parallels you were making about 30s/40s Germany and the daleks are beyond just parallels.

Robert A.

The Daleks were redesigned in part because Matt Smith is so much taller than previous Doctors (this plus Karen Gillan being 5' 11").

Ben

The original daleks when the show returned in 2005 were designed to match Billie Piper's eye level and these new daleks were designed to match Karen Gillan's eye level.

Azmat Mahmood

Pretty sure both Eccleston and Tennant are taller than Smith.

Jack Sjet

So the Daleks from doomsday, daleks take Manhattan, and the parting of the ways are special. Along with the Empiror. Unfortunately most daleks don't have names. You won't catch too many sporting names from here onwards .

Gambit3838

Multiple Daleks always a plus. Ms Angela in glasses always a plus. Doctor Who Wednesday always...well you get the point. Lol

Vinny Johnston

Of course the Daleks were based on the Nazis. The only Daleks who had names , were in the cult of Skaro.

Ken Penttinen

I always love when television shows do "scientific shorthand" and will design, fabricate, and deliver a brand new technology in a couple hours :D

Robert A.

I once saw Matt Smith and Karen Gillan at a convention -- they did their GoH panels separately, and Karen's was first. I was in line to ask the "How tall are you" question, but someone before me asked about Matt pranking her on set, and she explained how frustrating it was that she could never get him back... So I abandoned my question and instead asked if the con folk could post a message on the giant screens before Matt's panel that said "When Matt appears, do not clap. Love, Karen" and the crowd got into it...but the con organizers chickened out. 😕

demonic-myst

the colors is due to new typing they decided to make classes of darlek like they had during the war white the supreme blue strategist red drone yello eternal orange scientist

Merkavar

is anyone in the past great or even good? People seem to get remembered for one good act that some how over shadows the bad they did.

Alex

It can be simultaneously true that he was a hero without whom we likely wouldn't have made it through the war, as well as being the racist imperialist behind the Indian famine and Gallipoli. People contain multitudes

Merkavar

Like ghandi, wasnt he a massive racist in his early life and in his later life tested his celibacy by sleeping naked around young women, including his grand niece? But is remembered and revered for non violent resistance and freeing india 'It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of a son of a bitch or another. --Malcolm Reynolds'

Luke Jones

why do you feel the need to declare your opinion as if it’s the only one people can have? you don’t like the episode. good for you. other people do. based on your previous comments, it doesn’t seem like you’re very happy here so why do you keep engaging?

Kthulhu

I know this gets a mixed reaction, but I love it for at least one thing: it marks the end of pretending to kill off all the Daleks. By this point, even fans that began with the 2005 revival had figured out that "all the Daleks are finally dead" was BS, so it's nice that the show stopped pretending.

Kthulhu

Agree with Alex Gibson. People like to try and turn morality into a binary situation these days, and it's almost never the case that anyone is 100% good or 100% evil. Without Churchill, it's extremely likely that all of Europe would have fallen to Nazi Germany.

Josef Schiltz

Angela. Ian McNeice is a fairly reasonable representation of Winston Churchill, though a bit of a caricature, Far better is the late Robert Hardy who played Winston in the series The Wilderness Years. Robert Hardy also took his representation of Churchill further at various times in the succeeding years. There have been quite a number of actors who have taken on the role. The actor Peter Sellers voiced Churchill comedically on the wireless in The Goon Show during the 50s and it caused some consternation because, at that time, such things were deemed very disrespectful of the office. Things started to change with some satirical programmes in the 60s like That Was The Week That Was - TW3. Winston Churchill died January 24th 1965 at the age of 90 and there was a state funeral.

Rayna Storie

So far you've seen four cracks one in each episode except for episode 1 there was one that you missed in the tardis It was on a monitor that the doctor turned off the music got weird

David Traynier

Yeah, he was a mixed bag, to say the least. He did inspire people at the time, but he was also a white supremacist who advocated the use of poison gas on civilian populations in the Middle East and Africa to 'inspire a lively terror' amongst the 'savages". And what he did during the Bengal famine was atrocious. On the other hand, he was also witty and charming

AnastasiyaK

This episode is not the best but it’s still a lot of fun! My favorite bit is the Dalek going like “you do not require tea?” while the Doctor is yelling and hitting it 😂 makes me laugh every time

Kthulhu

So far all of your "jokes" seem to break down to "Matt Smith sucks, Karen Gillan sucks, Stephen Moffat sucks, David Tennant is the only true Doctor and RTD is the only true showrunner. I am right and you are wrong and anyone who disagrees is stupid!"

Azmat Mahmood

I've literally never said ANY of that, but if you guys want to make a big deal out of me being critical of these past two episodes, making light-hearted jokes that harm nobody and want to put words in my mouth because of all that, go right ahead. It's quite amusing tbh.😅

William Wood

I liked the episode, but the Dalek new design was not my favourite, but it could have been worse. The colours reminded me of the Peter Cushing movies in the 60’s, as they were used then. They didn’t use lots of colours in the classic series. So it was a nice change.

Josef Schiltz

I had to check back that this was written by Mark Gatiss and I was right. Not a fan of his episodes. I found the Doctor's 'friendship' with Churchill a problem as well. Maybe a wary diplomatic connection perhaps, but a friendship? Churchill, in this episode, thieved the TARDIS key after all, showing his devious and manipulative side. Never trust a hug.

Jeff Ratcliff

I'm confused. Amy had only been in 2 episodes of Doctor Who prior to 5x3 and didn't encounter the Daleks in either of them, so why should she remember them?

Azmat Mahmood

Because the Daleks invaded Earth twice up to this point in Doomsday and Journey's End. Oh look, Moffat era's #1 hater actually comes to its defense!!😂

Endymions Rage

Because a couple years ago, with the 10th Doctor and Rose, Daleks attacked. Very publicly. In England. On Earth. So it's strange she does not know this world altering event.

Jeff Ratcliff

That she would know, requires a bit of speculation. Consider how many times Donna missed big events. According to an AI, I asked, the timing at least works out if you pay close attention to dates and do some math. A non-timey-wimey, straightforward interpretation would be that the Daleks left before little girl Amy met the 11th doctor.

Azmat Mahmood

Tbf, Amy not knowing what the Daleks are just adds to the strangeness already around her like her living all alone in that huge house for some reason with that hidden room. It's not just her not knowing what the Daleks are on its own, it's an accumulation of odd things.

Mark McKeown

This one is kind of goofy, but I don't often enjoy any Dalek stories. Similar feelings towards next week, but really enjoy them all after that.

Howie

It's been great fun rewatching this Doctor Who season with you so far! Yup, just as I remembered, I didn't like the Dalek design refresh back then and I still don't like it. Even though I have watched most of Classic Who and all of the New Who, I don't consider myself a purist. I've enjoyed the redesigns of the TARDIS interior and some old enemies. But these colorful Dalek redesigns.. no... sorry it just doesn't work for me.

Leo Cap

the Dalek design is inherently bad (most Who alien designs are inherently bad) there are a few exceptions, but they're pretty much all terrible. I get that they were just working with the budget they had back in the day -- but for being the most ICONIC villain of Doctor Who, it still bothers me how silly they are i'm thinking like, "okay so we've got a fire hydrant with a toilet plunger, an egg beater and a flashlight", so them changing colors doesn't really make them any more or less cheesy to me lol

SomeBSName

Always hated this episode. Just really bad writing. No clue why churchill would randomly call the doctor to say check out our new weapon. Secrecy was insane during ww2 so the prime minister calling an alien who happens to be with an unknown human to show off is bollocks. Never liked the colourful daleks either. Colour feels like it adds emotion when they're supposed to have them removed.

Carl Wilson

And followed up by "I was promised tea" on the Dalek ship!

Carl Wilson

Yes, Matt is just ganglier! But Karen is way taller - Billie's 5'5"., Catherine Tate is 5'7", and Freema is just 5'2".

Chris T.

“Oo we got that new new” 😂

Craig Macdonald

Fun fact: it was a special kind of hell trying to find all 5 of the 'Paradigm' Dalek toys back in the day when this season was new (and Character Options was capable of producing figures at mass retail levels, RIP). I think only 2 were single-packed, the rest were all lumped in multipacks with stuff I didn't want. But I grit my teeth and burned my money because I LOVED these guys, with all their bold colours and exaggerated features. And I am adding the names of everybody who disagrees to The List™.

Lucifer_Crowe

probably the only real stinker of S5 imo (and even then it's a perfectly service-able episode tbf)

Lightning

Churchill called the doctor because he was unsure about the Daleks but by the time the doctor got there Churchill had learnt to trust them.

SomeBSName

Churchill was unsure whether to trust a weapon that someone he is paying developed? That makes a little less sense than him showing off. Unless I am misunderstanding but Churchill believes they're extremely advanced weapons developed by his scientists, not aliens.

funnylilgalreacts

I feel like Churchill was either bragging to the Doctor or was going to try to attempt to take the Tardis. Maybe both.

David Vandervliet

Really? I had no trouble finding them all (Red, Blue, White, Yellow and Orange)

Craig Macdonald

Only 1 page, but it's bigger on the inside.

Josef Schiltz

Forgot to mention that Winston was also a bit of a naturist. 🫢

Lightning

The real stinker is the Saturnyn episode

SomeBSName

Trying to steal the tardis is believable but bragging isn't. There are secrets from WW2 on both sides which are still being discovered. If he started bragging about a weapon that would win the war he'd lose it to spies or attacks. Just take a look at the Tirpitz, Germany's big battleship that will take Britain out of the war and it didn't sink a single ship. I would like it to make sense but I just don't think the writers put any thought into this episode other than "How can we bring back the Daleks after they wwre all destroyed"

janehofstra

Presumably an alien invasion on Earth would've been big news even if you were a child everyone would've been talking about it.

Kthulhu

In fairness, the Doctor thieved a whole-ass TARDIS.

Leo Cap

Angela, I don't remember if it was you who said this -- but if it was, i'm in the same boat -- Dalek stories are never my favorite for some reason. and while this episode in particular seems to suffer from some weak writing, I think the Bracewell twist was genuinely great and makes this, lowkey, my favorite Dalek story since, well... Dalek. I wasn't a fan of the bomb resolution, but just that dialogue exchange, "I created you!" "no... we created YOU!"

Leo Cap

the fisheye lens of Karen going "my friend reckons you're a dangerous alien. is it true?" makes me laugh every time

D

The St. John's Ambulance logo was an update for Eleven's tardis, but it's also a reference to the 1st Doctor's tardis which also had the logo!

Vinny Johnston

The Daleks were based on the nazis and it was only the cult of Skarro that had names .
