Been waiting for this episode! As someone who’s done military training in the winter (including trench living). Winter warfare is just a god awful experience. You have no idea what cold really feels like until you’re forced to work and sleep outside for days on end.

The Battle of the Bulge was a sudden German attack to try to break through the Allied lines and force a negotiated settlement. They overwhelmed the initial Allied defenses (as you saw at the end of the last episode) but then got stuck at Bastogne and Elsenborne until the weather cleared and the Allies drove them back. (BTW: the movie "Battle of the Bulge" is hot garbage). What I like about this episode is it breaks from the usual telling of the tale -- the German advance and Patton's race to respond to show what it was like for the 101st just to hold out against constant shelling and German attempts to break through, all while freezing their backsides off. It gets both how boring it was between the fighting and how terrifying it was when the fighting commenced. The actors actually met with the 101st survivors and talked to them about everything that happened, what they felt, what they saw. It makes for an amazing episode. And it jut gets better from here.

please tell me that " The Pacific" is next on your list after "Band Of Brothers"

The "M" is for morphine. They needed to track how much each patient received to avoid overdosing. I believe they were also supposed to pin the syrettes to the recipient's shirt to help track doses given. In an earlier episode, Doc Roe yells at Winters and Harry Welsh for not remembering how many doses they gave to Moose after getting shot by the sentry.

Also, the nurse Renee and the Congolese nurse shown in the show were based on real women Renee Lemaire and Augusta Chiwy. The real Renee did die during the Christmas Eve German bombing of Bastogne.

This is my favourite episode of the series, largely because I found the conceit of seeing war through the eyes of a medic - a non-combatant - so interesting. Roe is constantly putting himself in danger, constantly moving to solve one problem and then another, constantly trying to find supplies, to help his fellow soldiers. He does everything selflessly and without any apparent fear for his own safety. It's a completely different type of heroism to that usually seen in war movies, but it's no less real. And I recall in Stephen Ambrose's book that Lt Foley recommended Roe for a medal for his conduct during the Battle of the Bulge. This is where we start to see his resolve falter, and the constant pressure of caring for the men begin to affect him mentally. And Shane Taylor played it so well. He looks positively haunted as the episode progresses and as he finds it harder and harder to be the healer he thinks he's supposed to be. The story with Renee is not something that we know happened. She was a real woman, and so was the Congolese nurse, called Anna in this but her name in real life was Augusta, who tended to wounded men in Bastogne. They were remembered as the Angels of Bastogne. It's possible Roe did meet them, at one point, but no one will ever know for sure.

The Angels of Bastogne. Augusta Chiwy was born in the Belgian Congo, with a Belgian father and Congolese mother. She went to Bastogne in 1944 to spend Christmas with her family. Then the Germans attacked. She was a trained nurse, and helped her uncle, a doctor, until she volunteered to help at the aid station. Not being a part of the US military, she would sometimes wear a medic's uniform so she could help with the wounded and not be questioned about it. On Christmas eve, 1944, a bomb landed on the aid station. Augusta was blown through a wall. She survived, somehow unhurt, and continued caring for the wounded afterwards. Renee Lemaire was a registered nurse returning to Bastogne to spend Christmas with her family. Then the Germans attacked. She volunteered to help at the aid station, where she earned the praise of the battalion surgeon, Jack T. Prior. Her fiancee had been arrested earlier that year for being Jewish. Renee was still hopeful, saving a parachute to make into a wedding dress. On Christmas eve, 1944, a bomb landed on the aid station. Renee managed to save six soldiers from the burning building. She died trying to save a seventh. Jack Prior sent her body home wrapped in that parachute. There is no evidence that Eugene Roe had any sort of relationship with Renee, though it's likely they interacted at some point. Their burgeoning relationship was, as far as I know, the only intentional historical inaccuracy in the show. The people making the show wanted to tell the story, at least in part, of the Angels of Bastogne.

What they don't directly say in the show but they allude to: When Doc Rowe is talking to Garnear about his legs and Bill goes "Im pissing needles!" This is just a few days or a week after he was looking for "a place called Lulu's" :D

Yeah he must've found it, and it was a lulu... 😜👏😏

I only did a 3-day weekend camping with Boy Scouts once upon a time. Any work we did was pretty light, but first night it was -23F and 2nd was about -15F. The younger kids couldn't take it and were taken home after 1st night. Those of us who stuck it out got little 'awards' at the annual awards dinner that year. I continued to go winter camping with my troop every year until I left when I was 19 (then a jr. adult leader). I forget exactly what year the 'Blue Nose' trip was but it was somewhere in 1979-1981.

sabc factoid: like an M on the forehead is used to indicate a patient has been given morphine, a T means they have a tourniquet applied.

MacheteGirlMagazine

Look up the "Angel of Bastogne Augusta Chiwy" who is incorrectly portrayed here as the white French Woman.

Remember, God Emperor Trump has repeatedly called guys like Winters "suckers and losers". You are definitely not a Nazi and fortunately the majority of 'Merkins are not either.

Actually there was a black person earlier. The first truck driver at the end of episode 5 was black. He was a driver in the "Red Ball Express" (google it). Great reaction video! (I also put this in the full length video. I want to make certain people know about the Red Ball Express and the black soldiers contribution to it. It was one of the large reasons why we won the war was that supply train of trucks)
