I’ve always thought the “I never told him I loved him” wasn’t that Amy never said those words before but more that Amy’s never told Rory the depth of what she feels for him. Maybe “how MUCH I loved him” would have worked better.

Angela. Before watching, I'm betting this one - the Whouzel Bird? - won't do much for your ornithophobia As I remember it, when first seeing this episode, yes, I hazarded that it was a double dream fairly quickly.

I agree. I always took it to mean not that she had not literally said the words "I love you" to him, but that she had used it more like a formality, like at the end of a conversation in place of 'goodbye', just as a thing you say. She had never really told him though how she actually felt, how much she really loved him. Amy internalises her feelings, probably as a result of being told she was making up the Doctor her whole life. When she told the truth she got into trouble, so now she keeps everything close and to herself. Amy is not good about talking about her real feelings and thoughts, as a result it often comes out couched in what can seem to some even abusive ways to Rory, such as her often using derogatory words about Rory, calling him 'stupid' to his face in this episode, or the very scottish 'numpty' (foolish idiot) in the last. Although a part of that is the British, and especially Scottish trait of using verbal abuse to show affection. Which can be confusing for non-Brits.

As far as Amy not saying "I love you" but agreeing to marry Rory anyway (and he asking without her saying it) is accomodating the drama. Their relationship has been in doubt since the Doctor's first appearance but is now resolved.

Personally, I don't think S5 sucks but it's definitely one of my least favorite seasons of NuWho.

My interpretation of Amy saying she never told Rory she loved him isn't literal. It's not that she never said the words. It's that she never *really* expressed how much he means to her, that she kind of took him for granted. This is one of the most satisfying about this episode: it shows that their interaction with the Doctor deepens their bond and makes them appreciate each other even more. It's really wonderful to see that.

Amy has definitely said I Love You, I always thought she meant she loved Rory but never got to tell him she would always choose him, and he died not knowing.

The line of the Doctor saying that there is only one person who hates him that much is always chilling in its own way. This episode is actually better on a rewatch than it is the first time with the knowledge that the dream lord is the Doctor. The show boating and Rory’s expense, the self depreciation, trying to get Amy to choose between himself and Rory out of an insecurity that all his friends leave him. As much as he had no romantic feelings for Amy, he still loves being the most important thing in someone else’s world. It’s ego, but also a little sad, in that the Doctor truly only values himself as much as someone else values him. He can’t see it in himself anymore, not really.

I really think this episode is underrated. Knowing that the dream lord is just the doctor's inner thoughts really hits different. I feel people need to respect this episode way more.

It was not you. It was somebody who loudly voiced his opinion and then announced his departure because of it. I couldn’t do much about anything because I couldn’t read any of the comments but because I’ve already finished season five I can read more of these comments now.

How did you know Amy isn't pregnant in reality? It's 5 years in the future. They did remember time passing, they just skipped it. That's the point both could've been reality.
