I’M SO PUMPED FOR THIS REACTION! This episode is why 11 the most interesting Doctor to me.

Luke Jones

can’t wait!! i know you’re nearing the end of the season too so i’m super excited about that!

Cross Hatched95

Not one of my favourites. But It’s very difficult to say the end isn’t amazing. It’s a rather moving scene and it’s definitely the a memorable scene.

RhysBrattle

this doctor definitely has ADHD

brad

been waiting for this all week, so excited :D ! hope everyone is having a great day :). after finishing the video, i'd just like to add your husband could definitely watch this episode! in fact, this was the FIRST episode of doctor who i ever saw without any prior knowledge and it is what encouraged me to go watch the show. i thought matt and karen were perfect in this episode, especially at the end after they return to the museum. a beautiful episode and a great reaction :)

Marc Alg

Omg I've never wanted to give someone a hug more than now, we cry together, this is my favourite episode as someone with depression, I also have a monster i only can see... this hits hard

Frederik Jensen

I think you've forgotten how time travel works in Doctor Who. Changing the past changes the future. Seeing the museum in the present does not guarantee Vincent survives when they go back and meddle. There would be almost no stakes in the show otherwise. [Edit] That was meant to be helpful not snarky.

Dave Hillman

Bill Nighy (The curator) is a huge van gogh fan, and apparently his management originally asked more than the BBC could afford to get him to appear in this episode. When he found out about it, he then contacted them directly and offered to do it for Free.

RhysBrattle

on the other side of the episode the dark themes with the mental health aspects and the pain of ones mind hits deep. ive been battling with mental health a long time ive hit rock bottom and i mean rock bottom i watched dr who to help my brain climb out the shadows well doctor who and Funnylilgalreacts. thank you for your amazing content and thank you for making weeks and days better <3

The Inedible Mattman

I think this might be one of the most important episodes they've made. It's clear to me that they're portraying Van Gogh as bi-polar, and as someone who has suffered with bi-polar his whole life, it's astonishingly accurate. His depression really is like a madness, because when you go through it your mind changes and you think differently. It's not "yourself" anymore. And then of course the mania that comes after is enticing and creative and brilliant, but always cycles back to the depression. I love this episode. My favorite episode. We all deserve a day with the Doctor.

Lloyd Brady

Yes, have been so looking forward to this reaction! It’s the perfect follow on from the tragic loss of Rory, with its themes of depression and sadness that others don’t necessarily see. The monster is in fact a metaphor for Vincent’s depression - something that others can’t really see or understand, only Vincent.

Alexander Boston

This is up there with my favorite Matt Smith episode, right behind… Episode title SPOILERS… The Rings of Akhaten

Lightning

Time can be rewritten

Howie

One of the best Matt Smith episodes, and definitely one of the best New/Classic Who overall. Great acting, direction, and performances all around, and the design production was brilliant! As an art history lover and former mental health professional, this episode has a special place in my heart. Thanks for your reaction and sharing your heart regarding Van Gogh! And thanks for the delicious tears 💦

Space Monkey Mafia

So, since Vincent traveled in the TARDIS, would he count as a companion?

Ell Zee

Bill Nighy NOT the science guy

Josef Schiltz

This one wipes me out as well. Me and Vincent very probably have the same condition and both artists. I doubt that it was schizophrenia though. My stuff will probably end up in a skip so i am glad for Vincent in this episode. Tony Curran did an excellent job of portraying Vincent. Of course, the TARDIS does it's usual bang-up job of translating and makes of Vincent's accent - as we hear it, Scottish, the same as Amy and Vincent hears Amy as Dutch. Amy hears Vincent as Scottish! Somewhere, a polyglot is having a seizure! More importantly though, this episode is poetry. Karen's last line is beautiful. "Brighter than sunflowers." I don't go for noisy neurotypicentric activities either. My attitude towards such things is more akin to Wednesday Addams' when she turns down the offer to join the secret society. "You're turning us down?" "Can you believe it?" The pronunciation for Vincent's name is nearer fan hogh. I hope your eyes are healing okay, Angela.

Luke Jones

okay i know you were gonna cry but not 5 minutes into the video 😭

NiamhVT

Arguably my favourite episode of Matt Smith's run!

Justin

Actually neither the American nor UK pronunciation is correct. The G in dutch is pronounce with a “H” sound... So its kid of like “Hogh, Hah, or Hoff”… And they did mention Van Goghs brother in this, but it takes place during the period in which Vincent lived pretty far from them.

Chris Hurst

been waiting and waiting for this one. I've watched this episode many times and I still cry at the end.

bayleaf444

they don't do stuff like this often (probably for Good reasons) but they did a Good job with this. and Rory has red hair also. I can't help but think about the kids with very red hair. could be something that was said to the other in an episode if that where to have kids

Michael Siegel

Oh goodness, been waiting for this one! So so good. If I had a time machine, I'd do exactly what the Doctor does at the end. This is also one of the best depictions we've seen of mental illness. Even after being told he will one day be revered, Vincent's illness gets the best of him. It's both heartbreaking and all too real.

Ben

I wouldn't exactly say Rory's hair is red.

Van Evans

This is my favorite episode. I cry my eyes out every time I see it. Speaking of Ted Lasso- they were filming in my city recently and our boring Midwest asses were all so exited 🤣

Darth Muppet

One of my absolute favorite episodes from the entire show. I was going through a really hard time after my divorce when this episode first aired. I cried so hard the first time I watched it. It was exactly what I needed at the time.

Cassidy

I’ve been waiting for this episode for FOREVER, I’m so excited to watch your reaction!!

Robert A.

Did you get your husband to watch this episode? If so, how did he react?

David Vandervliet

I am going to be honest Matt Smith's first season is not my favorite. It's good, but I have not been here every episode for reactions. This episode, I am here for.

Russell Crockett

This is my favorite episode of Doctor Who ever, and not just because I’m a ginger… This is the only episode that I cry the same amount every time I watch it. The emotional impact never lessens with viewing as others do. It’s just perfect to me.

Kieron Lee

this episode is like a magic crying spell, I've never seen someone not cry watching the end

Leo Cap

I genuinely don't think this episode would be as popular as it is without Tony Curran's performance as Vincent. if they ever do a biopic on VVG, he needs to come back, he's the only actor for the job

David Traynier

Excellent. I've been anticipating this one for couple of years as I knew it would reduce Angela to a puddle. She did not disappoint.

Huffy

My family knew about the show I watched called Doctor Who, but they had no interest in it. I was a reserved kid. I watched my shows, wrote my stories, and mostly kept to myself. Doctor Who was a bright spot in my young life. The first time I watched this one, the emotions hit me HARD. I came out of my room sobbing uncontrollably which was very uncharacteristic for me. My mom panicked and asked what had happened. Through sobs I was able to get out that I had just finished an episode of my show. I’ll never forget the fear that was still in her voice when she went “I thought that was the happy/ feel-good show you loved!” Now, two decades later, my family also loves this show. My mom and I have bonded over it. And when we went to an exhibit for Van Gogh’s work, we cried together thinking about him, and this wonderful portrayal in this little show we love.

Drake

this is hands down my favorite dr who episode of all time

delicatetw1nk

Rory most definitely isn't a red head

Michael Jones

I’ve been waiting to see your reaction to this since I watched your reaction to Ted Lasso’s Sunflowers. I knew that this would be a very special episode for you.

Josef Schiltz

It's interesting. My own view is that Steven Moffat, Karen and Matt are on the spectrum somewhere. Karen's interviews with Craig Ferguson were a fascination watch. Matt certainly display distinct traits and, I believe, so does Steven Moffat. There are subject aspects within his writing which, at least, show familiarity with neurodiversity. A complex subject. My own experience being ASC Level 1 for over sixty years - only finding out in 2018 - has led me to a massive reevaluative process. Other members of the family, both past and present show and did show marked traits and a recognition that "Hm. You just might be one of ours!" It's a duck recognition thing. Not necessarily foolproof of course! Just a feeling one gets.

Doug C

Yep, I love tearing up on this one. The first time you watch it, that creature is just a monster of the week. Once you realize it is just a stand in for mental illness or other internal struggles, and you rewatch it you cry as hard or harder. 😭

funnylilgalreacts

I don’t remember at the time because I was sobbing uncontrollably. AGAIN. He said he liked it, thought it was beautiful.

funnylilgalreacts

I’m so happy the decided to bring season 4 to the States. Ted loves Kansas City and it’d be amazing to see Hannah and Brett in the American Mid-West 😍

funnylilgalreacts

It does make me feel better that really no one except the Dutch can pronounce it correctly

Robert Myers

And this is why I watch shows with you.

Archer

I was waiting for your reaction to this also, this is always in my top episodes list and re-watch often. I been to see the Van Gogh paintings, love them. When you see them, you feel a connection. How they portrayed him in this episode was just pure genius.

Wolverine2.0

i have been waiting for you to get to this episode since you started this show

Josef Schiltz

Angela. Bill Nighy was also Slartibartfast in the movie version of Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. I just demolished a whole Kg tube of Greek yoghurt to stop myself from crying. It didn't work. Greek yoghurt is my ice cream. This episode is amongst my favourite episodes, but then, I have been watching Doctor Who since 1964. There are so many excellent episodes in the Classic era as well. There's always hope. Sometimes we run and cope with our lives just on that. As the Fourth Doctor stated, with fortitude to Sarah Jane, so many years ago, "One good hope is worth a cartload of certainties!"

Gnaritas 74

One of the best episodes of all time imho.

Jessica H.

He's my favorite artist too and this episode is still my #1!

Michael

This is what solidified Eleven as my all time favourite Doctor. I just can't imagine any other incarnation dealing with Vincent in the same way as Eleven did, he is so empathetic and caring, yes he may be one of the most alien incarnations but he's so sweet with Vincent and with Amy too. The way he comforts Amy and rightfully tells her how much they helped Vincent but mental health isn't just a quick fix. I also really respect and appreciate the show for portraying it in a realistic and honest way. I think some shows would have the happy ending that Vincent seeing that would change his fate. But it's a more complex issue that can't be fixed by The Doctor and he knows that.

Fraser Anderson

I was waiting for this one because I knew you’d happy cry at it! So glad you loved it.

Shadeiv

I thought they'd give us a little break after losing Rory and have a light hearted/funny episode but then just doubled down with this, and it was perfect. Supplementary to this, I don't know if you've ever heard the song "Vincent" by Don McLean, (you probably have) but it's a beautiful (and sad) song about van Gogh and worth a listen if you've never had the pleasure.

Josef Schiltz

And the 'V' in van sounds soft like an 'F' sound. Of course, then if you pronounce his name properly then all the Americans will start correcting you! In the UK, when I pronounced his name correctly at school, all my peers started to scowl at me. I can't help it if my father's family originated in Rotterdam!

Josef Schiltz

Well, to Vincent, Amy was certainly companiable! Brighter than sunflowers.

Jamie Clarke

This is a great episode. For anyone who wants to know the song at the end is by a British band called Athlete it’s called Chances. I can’t get through it but good luck trying.

John the Rambling Scriblerian

I've already spoken on how this episode, and how Vincent himself, relates to me, over in Discord. But every time that I watch this, it drives home how fragile things can be, and how thin that line is between depression and happiness, between "I'm fine" and a genuine "I feel good". And somehow, watching this with Angela's reaction... it IS cathartic. And it does remind me how other people not only understand it, but that one is never alone in possessing those feelings that are akin to sinking into the deep blue ocean. And that helps me to remember one thing: just breathe. So thank you, Angela. This is a perfect episode of Who. And a perfect reaction from You.

Jedi Beavis

The name "Vincent van Gogh" is typically pronounced "Vihn-suhnt vahn Gokh" in Dutch, his native language. The "g" in "Gogh" is a guttural sound, similar to the "ch" in the Scottish word "loch". In English, it's often simplified to "Vihn-suhnt vahn goh" or "Vihn-suhnt vahn gof".

Eric Stahmer

My interpretation of Amy's "I'm not the marrying kind" line is that without Rory there's nobody who is right for Amy. Even erased from history he's the only man for her.

Thomas Mahrle

This might be my favorite reaction you’ve ever done. I was crying with you

Dallas R

That ending in the museum with Vincent is one of my favorite moments in DW. It never fails to bring to me tears.

Chris

So nice to re-experience this beautiful episode with you 💛🥲

Josef Schiltz

Btw: Angela. The "soothing music" that the TARDIS played is contemporary with the story. It's the 'Emperor Waltz' composed by Johann Strauss II in 1889.

Jay Willis

I'll be visiting the Musee d'Orsay at the end of the month (i've been to Paris a few times, but sadly haven't been to the d'Orsay yet), can't wait to see it. BTW what a performance (and casting) by Tony Curran who played Vincent. Had the perfect look but was able to pull off such a great performance as well.

demonic-myst

the thing about wincent is at the time people were not open about feelings and mental health outside of romancve so showing such vunerability did not apeal back then but years after he died culture changed we began to apreciate art that is pure emortion in olden times art was to display perfection in some way or form the greeks saw art as way to show poerfection in human form medievil times art depicted perfection in the devine

demonic-myst

medical historians believe he may of been bipoler or borderline person ality disorder both would exsplain the pain he went through unmedicated conditions that effect how we feel emotions both issues when unmedicated cause unstable exstremes in emortion often in sewlf hatred and sadness

James Hawkins

For me, this is one of the best episodes. I find it to be very emotional and I love a great cry. I cry at beauty.

Firefly24601

The tears, the pain.... give them to us!!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA 😁

john

I've never been a huge fan of season 5. I love Matt Smith, but overall, the season just felt weaker to me than the previous 4. But this. Hands down, is one of the finest episodes of the entire series. The ending at the museum gets to me every time.

Drake

"we know it doesnt happen" will not help you xD rory and amy saw themself and then rory was dead and gone and he was also gone from teh hill in teh future TIME CAN BE REWRITTEN XD and dont take our future as hint because they already had alot of aliens in london that we didnt had xD

Jeff Ratcliff

Written by the brilliant Richard Curtis.

William Wood

One of the best episodes ever. I loved how they handled it, extremely emotional, and a perfect ending. Watching your reactions is one of the highlights of my week. Nobody reacts like you. True heartfelt emotion, connecting to story in a sublime way that few can match. Watching with you makes me connect to the deeper emotions more readily than watching on my own. Fabulous.

Matthew Corya

The ending of this one gets me every time, just like The Girl in the Fireplace does!

Gambit3838

Great episode. This man is such a ridiculously talented actor. Tony knocks it out of the park in every role. TV and Movies.

Chance Gardener

I like the recent theory that Vincent didn't actually shoot himself but that a village kid accidentally shot him and Vincent said he did it to himself to protect the kid. It may not be true, but I definitely do prefer this idea of the chain of events that led to Vincent's end.
