Leo Cap

woohoo! wrapped up with a bow how did this season compare to previous seasons for you? where would you rank it?

Brooklyn Bretag

This show is just magic, has its ups and downs but always magical

Ben Boden

Very excited for you to watch the next series - some of the best episodes Matt did in my opinion

Leo Cap

something about seeing a Dalek in nature surrounded by tropical ferns makes it even scarier. like it's just an animal that wants to hunt you for primal reasons

Robert A.

Your definition of deus ex machina is spot on... :-)

Adinium

Just fyi, the Dream Lord has nothing to do with any events this season besides episode 7. That wasn’t his voice inside the Tardis last episode, it was a completely different voice from a different actor

Ryan Wood

So exited for the next season one of my favourite seasons. There were a few great episode this season but personally I think it is one of the weakest seasons of dr who so far.

Leo Cap

Doc stealing the drink from past Amy to give it to future Amy kills me every time 😂😂

Fred Aczon

The scene from 5x5 where the Doctor talks to Amy I always thought was an on set continuity error, as the Doctor lost his jacket to the Angels, and then comes back and talks to Amy with his coat magically back on the next scene, and then it was gone again. This episode kinda blew my mind when they explained it was him from a different timeline.

Josef Schiltz

You know, seeing the Dalek surrounded by ferns in the museum scene reminded me of past Dalek stories like the one on Spiridon or even further back, to the Hartnell era, in the story of The Chase. I wonder what Angela would think of this particular story. A little way into Hartnell's era, no doubt, but it was a great multi-locational story and doesn't really have any links to other story arcs. It's a great romp through time and space on it's own.

Leo Cap

here's a really fun easter egg: in "Flesh and Stone", when the Doctor tells Amy "remember what I told you when you were seven", you can partially see that Doc still has his jacket on. but if you remember in the episode, that Doctor sacrificed his jacket to the angels. super slick foreshadowing

Robert A.

And now I'm impressed all over again that Steven Moffat planned all of this from the get-go -- shooting extra scenes in earlier episodes. I totally missed that the Doctor was wearing his jacket in that conversation in the Byzantium, for example...or from the last episode, the bits with Vincent, and Liz 10. Steven is a master at long-range planning (more fun examples coming!)

Josef Schiltz

Alex's delivery of the line, "I'm sorry my love." always gets me in the feels. Feels to tears.

Michael Siegel

One of my favorite finales. IIRC, the scene where the Doctor talks to little Amelia before climbing into the crack was the first scene Matt filmed as the Doctor. He is amazing at being the youngest actor but feeling the oldest in the way he plays him.

Jack Sjet

Btw Rory is now older than the doctor

David Vandervliet

I remember catching that when it happened, and talking with friends about how they made the mistake

funnylilgalreacts

Oh geez I never thought of that. But didn’t everything reset? When they got married it’s just Rory again, not Auton Rory?

Jack Sjet

Everything did reset so his body is (however old he is), but since he remembers the doctor and the events of Pandorica Opens/the Big Bang; mentally or consciously he's about 2000. :)

JMonkey10

In a way its a lot like the doctor. The doctor is ancient, but regenerates into a new body. New body, same mind and memory. Rory is now human again, with his new big bang 2 body, but he still lived and remembers those 2000 years

Jack Sjet

He's flesh and blood now, no Auton gun unfortunately. Would have been an awesome inclusion but the show portrays peaceful resolutions over violence

Leguś

This finale is surely a Big Bang.

Merkavar

Yeah some vampire nonsense where the 200 year old vampire dates a 18 year old

Adrian Gell

So is Jack Harkness at this point. Which I mention because I've watched new-Who +Torchwood & SJA through a few times now without ever catching it until some days ago.

Jeff Ratcliff

According to Steven Moffat, the title of this episode isn't referring to the Tardis exploding or rebooting the universe.

Jeff Ratcliff

Suspension of disbelief is always a question of balance. When the fundamentals of the show are fantastical, you have to expect fantastical and not entirely logical events.

Ell Zee

Wow you can't let go of the Dreamlord huh! Lol. It was pollen!

Howie

It was a fun ending, bringing the Doctor back and all.. but overall (and this will be an unpopular take) I thought the finale was a convoluted mess compared to the previous two Doctor finales. Yes, I agree with you, Angela, all too convenient...

Drake

there is no dreamlord there never was a dreamlord its all fine

Drake

i have to say i love this final one of my favorites moffat stands for FUN like the episodes can be very dark sometimes but in the end you always have a FUN time. like when he talked to amy with the angels i dont know what u understood cause it was cut from the reaction but this wasnt a memory of his HE did talk to her (thats why he wore a jacket while in the episode he didnt, so if you rewatch that angel episode you see him having the jacket on for this talk showing its not the doctor from the episode)

Drake

it being unpopular shows that teh majortiy loves this finale

matt

This is the episode where Rory officially became my favorite companion.

Drake

i am still flabblegusted you dont watch torchwood i would have thought that would have been a perfect show for you alot of crying and doctor whoness and overall just awesome xD

Howie

Opinions are opinions. One may love vanilla and another will not. Many may hate the Game of Thrones finale and a few will like it. We are all entitled to our opinions. The majority may love this Doctor Who finale, that's great. But even Angela just stated at the end that it's not one of her favorites. So apparently she didn't love it either. 🤷🏻

Ben

I've never really understood why convenient = bad. Everything about DW is convenient if you think about it, i.e regeneration is convenient.

Howie

Nothing wrong with convenient. You are right: regeneration is convenient and so it the sonic screwdriver. Very frequently both have been used as a deus ex machina. But sometimes convenience is unsatisfying and leaves some with more questions than answers. Thus, this finale was not one of my favorites either.

Cody Eckert

Man, I can't wait for you to start the next season! Season 6 is where Matt finally started to click with me. I know people cream their pants over season 5, but it was my least favorite season of NuWho for a long time. This episode definitely hits some hard emotional beats. I always tear up at Rory protecting the Pandorica for 2000 years. And Amy's speech at the end tends to get me as well. But this episode (and this season) is a perfect example of Steven tending to get in his own way when writing. He tries to go for big grand reveals to complicated mystery box stories and sometimes it makes you just sit there and go "...what?". I'm sure you realize this at this point, as people have been saying it for a while, but The Dreamlord was just a physical manifestation of the darker parts of The Doctor's mind. He only existed because of the pollen. Still, it was funny just how hard you latched onto The Dreamlord as a theory lol. It made me giggle every time you mentioned the birds and that they are probably dreaming. I hope you keep enjoying!

Jaime Unson

I forgot this was the episode where, “Come along, Ponds,” originated. The Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill dynamic is top shelf Doctor Who. It is probably why I liked Matt Smith’s version of the Doctor over David Tennant’s. Also, how about Karen Gillan and her cousin, Caitlin Blackwood (Young Amelia), having an actual scene together? Alex Kingston with her “Spoilers,” line always gets me.

Alan Moore

The most important part of the episode is the line "We're all just stories in the end", which is so fundamental to the era that it's printed on the back of The Complete Matt Smith Years Blu Ray set. It really is the basis of the entire Smith era. The Doctor is just a story -- a story that the baddies fear so much they build the Pandorica, a story this Time Lord tells about himself, a story Amy believes so hard she makes it come true. No spoilers but bear this in mind and you'll see the story element crop up again and again.

Cross Hatched95

Round of a applause for the now legendary Rory Williams 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 what an amazing episode river 200/10, Rory 2000/10, Amy 11/10, doctor 1347/10 love it ❤️

John the Rambling Scriblerian

This music will ALWAYS be one of the best scores, in my opinion, in sci fi. And perhaps one of the things I love so much about this show is that it comes up with these absolutely ridiculous premises and ideas and solutions... and they WORK. Outstanding. Thank you for your video, and as always... well, I don't have a saying for that, I guess. I'll work on that. :P

OfficiallyGames

Feel like you holding so much onto the dreamlord stuff despite it being completely irrelavent since that episode (as in the same episode it was all explained what it was - a hallucination created from a pollen that used the doctors darker personailty/subconsious) has somewhat ruined your experience of the finale as it seems you were expecting too much of the finale involving the dreamlord.

Leo Cap

I didn't find it convoluted at all, it was pretty easy to follow -- the only real issue I have is how River remembered the Doctor and gave Amy the diary. that fact alone kind of undermines the significance of Amy remembering the Doctor and bringing him back. there's a possible explanation that goes into spoiler territory, but idk if I like it. Not to mention the fact that when she woke up, Amy still had all the dolls and figurines she'd made of the Doctor -- why she would need River's diary to remember him? that was really the only part that didn't make sense

Sportsfan-gamer24

Your comments on moffits story decisions are valid. There are great stories in moffets run. But also some odd writing or even plot points that are unsatisfying. Doesn't take away from the next few seasons though.

Sportsfan-gamer24

Bit of a controversial take, but the Vincent van Gogh episode and these last two are honestly, in my opinion, some of the best episodes of this season. Quite frankly, season 6 and 7 are two of my favorite seasons beyond this one. No spoilers. It's just simply that he finally got into the rhythm of playing the doctor and I feel like some of the stories were written well and maybe a little bit more imaginative. Not that I hate this season, but I prefer six and seven much more

William Wood

One of my favourite finale. Matt has one of the best interpretations of The Doctor, and strong seasons.

funnylilgalreacts

It’s mostly because I never had time working a full-time job and Doctor Who was always top priority

funnylilgalreacts

I think that’s why I was stuck on The Dreamlord thing, it’s actually a perfect wrap up of the whole story. But I will say, the season finales have seldom ever been a satisfying wrap up for me. Except for Tens last episode, there always seems to be something convenient like River with the Diary to help fix things. Don’t get me wrong, I love this show, I just wanted my narrative I built in my head to be correct.

AnastasiyaK

Love this finale so freaking much! Matt, Karen, Arthur, and Alex all shine so much and do so brilliantly as their characters. And even though the story is very timey-wimey and crazy, I love how it all comes together and Moffat makes everything make sense in the end, even if it really shouldn’t. Super excited for you to see the next season! It has some of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who of all time!!

Alex

A perfectly paced and fun finale. Brings everything back, everything (pretty much) makes sense. A real high point for the show

Ell Zee

This is a VERY important but slight spoiler for Torchwood if you ever decide to watch it. It broke me and you respond emotionally the same way I do(wonderful and validating BTW Luv ya!) Just be prepared it hurt me!

Howie

My sentiments exactly about Moffat "tending to get in his own way when writing."

Ben

That kind of suggests that, that is more of a you thing that a fault with the show itself, just because you might not get the narrative you want, it doesn't make the narrative you get.

William Hurley

It's difficult to explain this episode without risking spoilers for the whole of matt smith's run, it is such an overarching story that it won't be fully explained until near the end of his time as the 11th doctor. But it all ties up in the end, this is just the beginning, you have 2 more seasons and 3 more years to go.

Josef Schiltz

If we shadows have offended, think but this and all is mended, that you have slumber'd here whilst these visions did appear and the Lord, but that one of Time, was nothing, so do not fear! So travel on, with a brave heart, though, at times, creatures and monsters may give you a start and, in Wednesday's fashion, look them straight and dead-eyed and say, "Well, frankly, you know, I don't give a . . "

Josef Schiltz

Well, since the Doctor never landed on Amy's shed in that timeline, she didn't meet him and didn't make all the dolls and drawings. When River made an appearance at Rory and Amy's wedding reception however and gave Rory the book, still with it's pages blank - cue River's time bending theme - a convergent timeline started to fall into place with Amy's tears and, finally, when the memory of the Doctor surfaced properly and the TARDIS landed, a convergent timeline snapped fully into place. You could look at it as 'Temporal Stratification'.

Michael Jones

A couple of behind the scenes notes. 1.) Come Along Pond. When Matt and Karen were first in costume, it was for a photoshoot for promoting the series. They had to move from one location to another and Matt just turned to Karen and said “Come along, Pond.” Moffat heard him say it and was like “I’m having that!” 2.) The Doctor Dances. In the script, it said something along the lines of “the Doctor dances terribly, like a Drunk Giraffe.” That dance Matt does with his arms up in the air was how Matt interpreted that. It became known as “The Drunk Giraffe.”

Isaac

Sounds like something the dreamlord would say... 🤔

Isaac

I really like this episode and this run but man Moffatt really starts going overcomplicated with the stories

LabyrinthSouls

I’m not sure why you are so fixated on the dream lord. I guess you missed it in the episode but The dream lord was the doctor. It was a subconscious manifestation of his self hatred that the dust thing made. The dream lord wasn’t a separate person who hates the doctor. It was his self loathing taking form in a dream.

LabyrinthSouls

I loved him a lot here but for me it fully burst forth with “ where is my wife”

funnylilgalreacts

I watched this 2 months ago to avoid spoilers. It as my first time watching it. I came up with what I thought was going on. I wish everyone would cut me some slack.

Rach

Honestly I think Moffatt stories get more comprehensible from here on out. Yeah they're a bit complicated but they do make more sense than the 'remembered back into existence' thing. Everything is explained and fits together eventually.

Rach

I think it's that shot at the end of the dreamlord in the Doctor's reflection. Was meant to indicate the Dreamlord is a part of the Doctor but it does seem like they're saying 'this guy is still hanging around in the tardis'

funnylilgalreacts

I think it’s definitely the fact that they showed his reflection. Why would he not still be there? If he’s part of the doctor, why wouldn’t he still exist with the doctor? I know, mold, spores or dust or whatever got into the tardis but that doesn’t mean that I should just forget about the dream lord. But I guess I should have, my bad.

Rach

As the doctor once said: 'It doesn't work like that, some people live more in 20 years than other do in 80, it's not the time that matters, it's the person'. 2000 years waiting on earth can't be compared toto 900-ish years in 11 different bodies travelling the universe, in terms of life experiences.

Cody Eckert

People are giving you way too hard of a time about that. I thought it was kind of funny/cute more than anything, but I definitely don't hold it against you that you had a theory and stuck to it. I hope I didn't contribute to your frustrations by mentioning it.

Cody Eckert

If you do decide to watch it, which I really hope you do, keep in mind it's a much darker and more adult show. But Season 3 is some of the best TV I have ever watched. Not just sci-fi, but tv in general.

Leo Cap

it's interesting how many people in the comments are saying this episode was "too convoluted", "bad writing" etc... seemed easy enough to follow to me. I'm not sure what exactly folks are referring to... is it zipping around with the vortex manipulator that confused people? aside from River giving Amy the diary, I'm trying to figure out which part of this episode *doesn't* make sense

Adinium

I think one thing that always confused me was how convenient it was that the universe only entered its final hours after 2000 years passed from when the Doctor was trapped in the pandorica. Like why did it happen in 1996 specifically

D

Absolutely! One of my favorite little easter eggs is that "I am the Doctor" is written in a 7/8 time signature, making it feel like half a beat is missing - or maybe never existed :)

DSJ.

brilliant response, i love it, iconic

D

Everyone's going off about this season being convoluted like we didn't watch 10 have a Gandalf>Dobby>Jesus arc two finales ago lol. Call me crazy, but the way they tied every other episode in to this finale makes this the best and most cohesive season arc so far. All the little bits of foreshadowing, from the Doctor still having his jacket on when talking to Amy in the forest, to the Doctor wondering why there aren't any ducks in the duck pond in episode 1 ("Why aren't there any ducks?" "I don't know, there's never any ducks") make this season endlessly rewatchable. Also everyone's giving you way too much grief about the dream lord stuff. We all have the benefit of hindsight, but you were absolutely right about the birdsong being so prevalent. I'm glad you picked up on it because I've watched this series countless times and never noticed, but it's such a great red herring and clearly intentional!

funnylilgalreacts

Thank you so much for not shitting on me about the dream lord thing. It’s been a hard 24 hours. I really thought I was on some thing. I thought I cracked the case. And I was so blatantly wrong it’s embarrassing, but I figured people would laugh at it. Not be rude about it. I think by the time this season rolled around the way these finales get wrapped up, feel very messy to me. This one wasn’t bad. I was just really hoping that it would be tied with a little bow and everything made sense and flowed perfectly for me. It wasn’t so much me creating my own narrative in my own story and felt let down that I wasn’t correct but more so I really think Stephen Moffett has been so hyped up that I expected it to be mind blowing and it wasn’t.

Eric

Nice, couple of things! I personally love the over-complicatedness of Moffett which I think is one of his more polarizing attributes. I love his season / multi-season long arcs but other people don't seem to like it, but I think most people love his individual episode writing despite that. I think I really like his long arcs because of the rewatchability, annnd it makes me feel clever when I rewatch and figure it out more. I also like Tenet so take my opinion with a grain of salt, lol. I will agree that I'm not a fan of memories bringing people back during this season. I like Doctor Who alot more when things can be explained "scientifically" Fun to see you watch it for the first time! I agree with D on the dream lord thing. I think your theory on the dreamlord was pretty clever, and it was something I remember noticing, but never fully thought out or articulated. I hope you don't feel too embarrassed by it, the show has a lot of red herrings, timelines (not always going in the same direction mind you), among other things, so it is almost impossible to predict what is going on watching it the first time.

Fraser Anderson

The fact this is the first season where we keep both the doctor and the companion(s). Love it!

endopoth7

River lies too. No spoilers. Amy is the best companion! Love her (This is not including River because obviously she is best overall) I love how the enemy this season was basically time. It wasn’t just memories. With the time energy in Amy’s mind she brought people back. It is clear River and The Doctor are the best ship. 11th is the best Doctor.

Leo Cap

my interpretation of "time collapsing" isn't exactly "the past and the future crumbling down to the present", but "every moment in time shrinking at once" Doc did mention that they're the "eye of the storm", so my guess is that we're just experiencing the collapse from their point of view. it does frankly step into the territory of "sci fi suspension of disbelief" since none of it is ever actually possible

Alan Moore

To be fair, Moffat stories generally require a second watch to fully “get” them. They are much more dense with detail than RTDs. I personally love Pandorica/Big Bang, but it’s hard to remember what it was like watching it the first time. And wouldn’t be embarrassed about latching onto the Dream Lord — there are fans still obsessing over the Valeyard (don’t ask) from 1986!

Josef Schiltz

Btw Angela: When the Doctor says, "Gotcha!", it's a call back to the hugging scene at the end of The Beast Below. To contextualize: DOCTOR: Amy, you could have killed everyone on this ship. AMY: You could have killed a Star Whale. DOCTOR: And you saved it. I know, I know. AMY: Amazing though, don't you think? The Star Whale. All that pain and misery and loneliness, and it just made it kind. DOCTOR: But you couldn't have known how it would react. AMY: You couldn't. But I've seen it before. Very old and very kind, and the very, very last. Sound a bit familiar? (They hug.) AMY: Hey. DOCTOR: What? AMY: Gotcha. DOCTOR: Huh. Gotcha.

Charles Edwards

I totally understand getting hooked onto a particular character here and there, but as you go through the Matt Smith seasons of this show, you’ll start to be able to notice the one-off episodes that don’t contribute to the overarching story. Vincent, the Dream Lord, the vampire fish things, etc. are all one-off characters for the most part, with the notable exception being Vincent coming back for the Pandorica episode…but I think that was them saying “here’s a fun way to introduce everything!”

Charles Edwards

Oh, almost forgot… I tend to find the “remembering something can bring it back” idea as more of a metaphor. It’s been in media over and over again. Nothing and no one is truly gone so long as their memory exists. I think Moffat just took that idea and said “well, in this silly sci-fi show, what if it could really happen?!” and then did it. Your sister lives on/is brought back by you remembering her and the antics you got up to as kids and such, similar to my father when I was growing up. They aren’t physically back, but so long as those memories are there, they can comeback in a way anytime a memory of them is triggered.

James Hawkins

This is the episode you have been waiting for. I love Moffat's stories. He is a fantastic writing. Thanks for the review.

Aeriel Diettra

"we have all these enemies... I don't know if they'd work together" but they did? Like it just happened, what do you mean you don't know? Lol
