Content

These will not be edited down unfortunately. Every reactor I know that has tried to have them edited down has had copyright issues and I won't chance losing my channel or getting a strike. I WILL BE WATCHING THEM WITH SUBTITLES so wish me luck.

Grave of the Fireflies is not on the poll because I already promised Editor Xander I'd watch it.

RationallySassy

Ghibli films are well accepted for their dub versions in case you were worried about backlash for not using subs :)

Mr. Duck

Howls was my first and then it was rabbit hole. So that’s my vote

RationallySassy

Also heck yeaahhhh! Been hoping you’d watch some Ghibli movies. All of them are amazing 🤩

James

Not Studio Ghibli, but I really think you should watch “Your Name”. It’s so beautiful and emotional!

GeoAce

I’m writing in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Or at least saying it should be on the poll

RationallySassy

One of my favourite anime films now! Suzume was also good but Your Name is still my favourite

James

I never understood why people care so much about people watching dubs. Most people prefer to watch things in their native language. And dubs have been really good lately anyways.

Caillou

It seems Porco Rosso is missing 😢

RationallySassy

I agree! Yes the quality for some dubs doesn’t match the same level but the person watching it for the first time doesn’t know that and still gets into the piece of media. And a lot of English reactors switch from sub to dub for Ghibli films because they were made for that audience - not just a simple translation - and so the impact of the film is usually better in these cases :)

Kranitoko

If you're gonna watch Spirited Away, you CAN watch the subtitle version, but honestly the dub is just fantastic in itself anyway.

Paulo

I hope Howls Moving Castle wins I love that movie

Nixilis

I second that. It's not a Ghibli per say but the movie that lead to the creation of the studio itself, and one of the best. Also, it's an adaptation ( shortened ) of Miyasaki own manga. Worth a watch ( and a read ).

Rester

My top 3 are polling at the top 3, which is great. I will say, the dub versions are fantastic with some real a-list voice acting.

m azr

To each their own

Michael Siegel

Hope you can manage this. Ghibli is a wonderful studio and terrible about fair use.

RationallySassy

What I love about Ghibli dubs is that, since there was an arrangement with Disney, as part of that deal, Disney had to commit to high-quality, faithful English dubs and Studio Ghibli had oversight the whole time to make sure the tone and meaning were translated well. They're so good (and I love the voice actors they ended up choosing, too!)

RationallySassy

The main (albeit silly) reason I like the dub is the last line compared to the sub version, but I won't say more as I don't know if it's spoilery?

Natalie

Spirited Away is one of the most impressive, but Princess Mononoke is my favourite.

Jacob King

I’ve seen Spirited Away so many times it’s basically a part of my psyche and I’m still excited to watch it again.

Leo Cap

question Angela, are these all movies you haven't seen yet? or just been a long time?

Patrick Waldeck

Spirited Away is almost certainly going to be the well deserved winner but Porco Rosso and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind should be on this list as well!

Classic

I'm voting Princess Mononoke, but you honestly can't go wrong with any of them.

thejamppa

Oh boy... Grave of Fire flies... it will break fast anyone with evennounce of humanity left... Howl's moving Castle, Spirired Away are great films: Totoro is rain day film: take hot tea, cuddle under blanket and put it on. Yes, nothing really happens (in action wise) but movie is still serene and magical

Chuck Eberhart

I wouldn't even risk your channel for Ghibli

Laia

spirited away has been my favorite movie for over 20 years! (i’m only 23 lol). it gives me so much nostalgia 🥹

Laia

howls moving castle is definitely a close second! I’d also highly recommend “the cats return” :)

Alkaris

So many favorites to choose from! My Neighbor Totoro is a favorite, followed by Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Other Ghibli movies not on this list that are personal favorites are Laputa Castle in the Sky, Whisper of the Heart, Pom Poko and The Cat Returns.

Raven Stromdans

There's one that comes to mind that isn't on this list because I think it technically predates the Studio Ghibli days (and also wasn't an original story, but an adaptation of a manga, unless I'm mistaken), but was made by many of the same people who ended up forming the studio - Nausicaa of the Valley of The Wind. It was my first introduction to this style of film and artwork and is one I still recommend for people breaking into the genre.

Cody Eckert

Man, Kiki is so low, but I feel like that movie is right up your alley.

Josh del Villar

Can't really go wrong with these. Happy to see you get to enjoy them. Each one will really just be about what kind of feelings you want to experience and walk away with

Jaime Unson

Porco Rosso (1992), 紅の豚 - Kurenai no Buta [The Crimson Pig] is a small yet important Ghibli film, and one of my favorites. It’s criminal not to include it.

RationallySassy

Yeah, I’d just post them on patreon only - I think that’s safe right?

Haverian

I highly recommend Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso which are not on this list

William Wood

Too many good ones, Totoro, is brilliant, and we just watched Princess Mononoke at the IMAX. But by far and away my favourite is Grave of the Fireflies. I am sure you will love any you watch

Jaime Unson

風の谷のナウシカ [Kaze no Tani no Naushika] - Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) does predate Studio Ghibli by 4 years but it’s signature Miyazaki. It’s also the first collaboration between Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi. The 7 volume Miyazaki manga it’s based on has a far more extensive story but I don’t think it’s necessary to enjoy the film.

Paul D. Hoffmaster III

Even though it can't be on this list, for me, Nimona should have won the Oscar over The Boy and the Heron.

Nathaniel Castle

Hopefully Nausica will make the next list 😊

Lily

Everybody sleeps on the wind rises 😮‍💨

Benjamin Brönnimann

"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" was my favorite one growing up, you should definitely add it to the next Ghibli movie poll

spring deerling

Omg I LOVE howls moving castle, but my favorite is Castle in the sky!!! I'm surprised you're going to watch these with subs. I watched these growing up so it was in English for me. (Christian Bale as Howl is so 😍❤️)

funnylilgalreacts

As I stated, I won’t be editing these down it will just be the full length watch along

funnylilgalreacts

It’s stated above that I’m not editing them down so it will just be the full length watch along. I meant no risk because I will not be showing any footage.

funnylilgalreacts

Depend depending on what wins I’ll probably put out another pole asking if I should watch it in sub or dub. I promised Xander I would watch grave of the fireflies in sub

Michael Siegel

Ah, missed that. Now I'm going to have to upgrade my membership. :)

RationallySassy

Yeah, I went like 15 years before I saw someone watch a Ghibli sub and it threw me off 😂 It's usually the other way around for other media! So many notable voice actors in those films Also I love Castle in the Sky! I know it's not as popular as the others but the music always gets to me and I love the story

Jason Gillman

No Porco Rosso is sad, voting for Kiki’s Delivery service even though I know Spirited Away (which is fantastic) will win. Also consider the dubs for some of these, many are pretty good.

Christophe

Jeez you're gonna be watching Grave of the Fireflies? Good luck. That's a tough one.

Avery Wooden

May I request Laputa: Castle in the Sky? It's less popular than the others but it's the one that means the most to me and I'd love to share it

Raven Stromdans

Thank you for the clarification; I didn't know that Miyazaki had written the source manga as well.

G0d_Ginrai

Would love to see a reaction one day to: ‘Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro’ It’s not a Studio Ghibli production, but it was the first Anime movie ever directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Logan Kerlee

I voted for the three that got me into anime in the first place - Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and How's Moving Castle plus another that I feel MUST be watched by all - Ponyo. I believe that I've watched all of these in the past but those are my faves among them. :)

Kayla🫶

may i suggest, for ghibli movies, the DUB is actually AMAZING and i think everyone would agree with that. So if you were wanting to try sub on something, maybe don’t make it this bc you would be missing out on some fantastic voice acting and amazing cameos 😏🫡

Kayla🫶

also i want spirited away to win as much as anyone else but…. ponyo is my baby 🥹

spring deerling

I think that was one I watched in sub since it was in the past few years that I watched it for the first time. I'm excited! These movies have their own sense of magic and wonder!

spring deerling

Ik nausica came first and is considered Ghibli but Castle in the sky is technically the first made after the studios founding. My dad would burn a bunch of CDs for us when we were young and castle in the sky was just so magical to me.

funnylilgalreacts

I might not do it in sub now that everyone’s saying that I shouldn’t

Fatalistic Viking

I just went to see Howl's movie castle in the theater and it was amazing

Nathaniel Castle

Sprited away is probably the most popular Ghibli film and its a great introduction to them, it wouldnt be my first choice but you are gonna have a good time with it!

Yoshio

Spirited Away is winning so far and is a great intro to Miyakaki. It was for me and led to me watching and owning most of his movies. I highly highly recommend the dubbed version. John Lasseter of Pixar collaborated to bring Miyazaki into the western spotlight and as a result the dub voice talent are Disney-level for all of his top films. I'd also like to mention that Miyazaki usually works with Joe Hisaishi for the score (like Spirited Away) and is one of the best composers imo, up there with Zimmer. His music will move your soul.

Yoshio

I grew up watching Lupin and Miyazaki's take really hit differently and is my favorite Lupin movie. Great recommendation!

Yoshio

Adding my vote to the Dubs as well, they're so well done.

Jack Mingle

Wish Pom Poko was here, that is the best Ghibli movie ever, along with The Cat Returns.

Jack Mingle

wish there was Pom Poko and The Cat Returns as well.

Mike Condon

Not on the list, but From Up On Poppy Hill is a well told story about high school students trying to save their clubhouse from being demolished. Trust me, it's better than it sounds.

Kaitlyn McIntosh

I would really love if - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, was added to the poll :D It's technically not Studio Ghibli, but it is the film that Studio Ghibli was formed from. It is such an absolutely amazing movie and it will resonate so, so much with the kind of person you are.

Kaitlyn McIntosh

Grave of the Fireflies is going to destroy you, but it is such a brilliant movie, just brace yourself!

Nathan Jasper

I also recommend Only Yesterday if you do more of these in the future. Daisy Ridley did a voice in the dub version

James

I really hope you don’t stop doing anime dubbed bc you’re the only channel I can find that does dub reactions. I really love dub bc I can focus on everything else going on.

funnylilgalreacts

I don’t think I’ll be switching to subtitled anime anytime soon unless the dub is known to be absolutely awful. I think a movie I can do but episodic adventures where there’s a lot of detail. It just would really ruin the experience so I definitely think I’ll stick to dub for anime.

James

Thank you! But I find that movies usually have some of the best dubs bc they have much bigger budgets and like to hire better actors! So unless a dub is known to be awful I think dub is really great! Thank you for doing dub!

Riku Kurosaki

Both Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are great imo but Princess Mononoke is one of the first Studio Ghibli films I ever saw and it holds a special place in my heart.

matthew h

You might consider dub for these. Most of the Ghibli films have very good dubs that don't detract from the movie. Also, really happy to see you getting into these films.

Ntrovert

The dubs are well done, Angela. I really think that you will be good with them. They usually get some good names to voice the characters, and I have not heard a bad dub yet. My daughter and I watched Miyazaki films together, and Howl and The Wind Rises are particular favorites. Fair warning, though. Several have already commented about Grave of the Fireflies, and they aren’t kidding. I recommend a box of tissues and a cold wet washcloth for your eyes afterward. Ugly crying is not at all unusual with this film.

Ntrovert

Wonderful film, one of my favorites.

Ntrovert

You may not want to react to them all. But I hope you will want to watch them all, at some point.

Tales of the Boojum

Miyazaki himself has said his films are meant to be watched, not read.

Alan McGillis

I can't be mad about my choice not winning these are all amazing movies that you NEED to watch at some point in your life

dys

I'm usually more of a sub over dub guy but Princess Mononoke especially has an English dub that I consider significantly better than the original Japanese version, with an incredible voice cast. Part of the reason for that is it wasn't just translated but the translation was reworked by a talented English-language author... unfortunately now we know decades later that author (Neil Gaiman) is a complete monster in real life which leaves a bit of a sour taste about it.

dys

Same, really hope she does Princess Mononoke in the near future too.

Daryl 👽

Highly, HIGHLY recommend the dubbed. They're actually just as AMAZING!!

Ash Davis

Spirited Away is probably the best entry point into Studio Ghibli as you could get. You get a little taste of everything the studio has to offer!

Jacob King

I think about Ponyo whenever I want to eat some ham.

thejamppa

Yeah, that's smart. Japanese copyright are tough to clear in YT.

Saphthings

Umm where's Grave of the Fireflies? But Angie, being very honest since you're "new" to reacting to anime. Ghibli is a dangerous studio to react to, they quite often go really hard against content creators, that's why you don't see as many reactions. Since you're a reactor, you must have groups where you speak to other reactors (I used to be one way back when!). Reach out to VKunia, she literally had to restart her channel because of Studio Ghibli. If you DO react to it, I suggest waiting at least a month or so until another Ghibli reaction. What usually hits channels hard is they'll find a channel that has a bunch and then a strike for each one. But also honestly, Grave of the Fireflies with your heritage would be awesome lol NO SPOILERS yall! EDIT: Oh... I just read the actual caption to the post... whoops lol!

Saphthings

Lol wow... everything I said in this comment is literally answered in the post itself... .... shame self for not reading xD

Kev Martin

"None Of The Above"?

Daryl 👽

Same! Back in the days of VHS, my sister would rent random animes and this one came up. Was blown away!

Harry S

I though it was interesting. A lot of info I did not know.

Wild_Lee_Coyote

Most reactors I know keep Studio Ghlibi movies private on Patreon. Another why for YouTube is to make it members only post. You can make a base membership of $1. That keeps everything private and less likely to be striked.

MooLake

I would agree the dubbed for studio Ghibli films is very good! I wouldn’t recommend switching for them!

MooLake

Yes!! Love Nausicaa!
