Merkavar

Oh no she is going to think everything is a dream again :D

Leo Cap

I don't think you're confused Angela -- you just don't have all the pieces of the story yet! We were all in the same boat when we first watched this. all the information we're supposed to know after these two episodes you've successfully clocked The trick with this show (especially the Moffat run) is to not let the unknown mystery be a source of exasperation. I notice a lot of the time whenever something isn't revealed or explained within its own episode, you may or may not get a bit frustrated (let me know if I'm way off the mark there) -- I think this show is more palatable once one lets go of trying to work things out ahead of time I'm not saying "don't do predictions", but the absurdity of this season makes it simply unpredictable on all fronts. I personally think it's more enjoyable to just marinate in it as it goes on, and let your curiosity have time to breathe 🙂 OOH! to quote you, Angela... "if you keep craning your head to look into the future you'll break your neck!"

Just FYI, it wasn't the Hoover dam, it was the Glen Canyon dam, in Arizona.

Cen

So the Rory scene with the recording was the show runners showing the audience it's the end of that cause there was so much backlash about season 5 Amy being hot for doctor constantly whilst engaged on her wedding night.

Nathan Jasper

And you predicted everything correctly your first watch?

Nathan Jasper

I LOVE all the clues we get each episode as to what's going on. It's like Hansel and Gretel wandering through the woods, following breadcrumbs... but are we headed to the safety of town or to the witch's cottage?

Ben

To be fair, there is actually good reason for her to think everything is a dream here compared to the S5 finale.

Reggie Ortiz

The second dream was said I was like uh-oh it’s coming back!

Cleverusernamed97

From now on until the end of the Season, you should subtly add marks on yourself for a gag. 😂

TGrimace

"Is she a horcrux?" might be my favorite question you've ever asked in a video. I had to pause the video because i was laughing so hard.

There is a subtle clue that gets lost in the noise that unlocks a twist in the episode: In the establishing scene for Canton, Mark Shepard, and Carl, Chuk Iwuji, in the classy bar, the two are having an exchange of words while Canton is nursing an almost finished drink. Carl then takes the drink out of Canton’s hand while saying “Tell that to the President of the United States” (POTUS) The act of taking a drink out of another persons hand struck me as socially out of place. Only Mom or Dad or other such person of a familial relationship is socially permitted to perform such an act. This social faux pas is buried as the continuing main line plot unfolds. When Steven Moffat lights the neon sign in the wrap up scene with Canton and Nixon and the end of the second episode the tumblers click. The bar scene where Carl takes the drink from Canton’s hand reveals that Carl has the familial relationship that socially allows him to remove the drink from Canton’s hand and that the ensuing argument in the oval office was just a professional argument but also a lovers quarrel officiated by POTUS himself. And finally when Amy tells Canton “I have something that I wanted to tell him [The Doctor]... But stuff always gets in the way.” Canton is remorseful for the hurt caused by his argument with Carl when he says ruefully “Stuff does that” Only in the timey wimey universe of Doctor Who as written by the twisted mind of Steven Moffat is the term “spoilers” itself a spoiler. Your on his twisted emotional roller coaster now. Relax and accept each drop off and turn on its face. Know that you will eventually exit the ride and will walk away, but you will be forever altered by the ride. “It’s just a statue”

Moffat as a few writing "modes" in my mind, and this is my favourite example of his maximalism mode. Just absolute breakneck paced dialogue, 10 jokes per minute, unsettling concepts galore and so many mysteries to really dig into on rewatch. The Eleven+Amy+Rory+River team carries it so well, it looks effortless out of their mouths. I also have to shout out the director Toby Haynes, who also directed the the S5 finale & A Christmas Carol (and went to do the prison break arc in Andor!) One of the best-looking stories the show has ever had IMO.

Alkaris

Horcrux is not a thing and is strictly a Harry Potter thing. There's just no such thing in this universe.

nubite

I can't wait to see you experience everything this season has to offer

Ash Davis

This has been my head canon for YEARS and people have told me I was crazy and looking too deep into the subtext, but I think your analysis is absolutely spot on! And the fact that years later Chuk would become a recognizable face and name just puts icing on this Hear Me Out Headcanon cake!

Leo Cap

I swear, a few years ago I was watching Imon Snow's reaction to Avatar the Last Airbender -- in s2e1, when Azula wields lightning for the first time, she looks at the camera with a shocked expression and says: "is she... a sith lord??" the way I died 😂😂

Rach

This is an incredible opening story imo. Satisfying ending to the two parter "They'll forget this bit...!" but also a huge amount of emotional beats and juicy mysteries to get stuck into that set up the rest of the season. And because it's Moffat, you know they'll probably be resolved in some way eventually. But how? Well you'll just have to find out...

Daniel King

going to be fun watching you try and work this season out

Michael Jones

I keep forgetting that the US Domestic copies have that little Amy Pond preamble before the theme song that throw off the sync with the British copies. I had to resync once I realized you were like a minute behind me. I really wish they'd get rid of that preamble.

John

River falling off the 50th floor is the ultimate trust fall.

Paulo

Yeah I don’t remember much of this season so it sucks when they leave it in a cliffhanger.

Ejigantor

I love this episode. Especially the scene where The Doctor asks Rory the personal question - great performances, especially Arthur. I also like the exchange between Rory and River after her flashy spectacle of violence. And of course the whole conceit of the Moon Landing secret message is tremendous fun. And The Doctor telling Nixon to tape everything in the Oval Office. It is a little mean that the episode starts with those fake-out deaths, but at least we know they were staged before the opening credits roll. And the first time I watched, I was flabbergasted and befuddled by the closing scene where the little girl regenerates - rewatches have allowed me to pick up on things I didn't catch on my first go-round.

Merkavar

Yep, 100% correct 60% of the time :P

Jack Mingle

Well technically the Master's Ring sort of is but works differently

Brian

Angela, now it’s safe for you to see this. In the first episode of Season 5 (the first Matt/Karen/Arthur episode) when Amy first enters the TARDIS, as she’s walking around the finale and looks up, she gets a terrified look on her face that disappears as soon as she turns to speak to the Doctor. That was the “first” time the Silence are seen by Amy. There’s even a little sound effect and very subtle wobble in the music at the exact moment it happens. It’s almost at the end of the episode, she still has her nightgown on. It’s at timestamp 2:28 here https://youtu.be/-tXxws8SCJo?si=Nr1JHj4aTVTuhwJ3 on this short clip from the episode so you don’t have to drag up Amazon or anything. It’s quick but Moffat confirmed it. It’s the official BBC page. Moffat is a sneaky lil devil ain’t he?

Leo Cap

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this was a fan theory that was debunked a long time ago. Do you have a link to the BBC page this was supposedly confirmed on? Amy's expression relates directly to her next line "why me? you're asking me to run away with you in the middle of the night". the idea of a Silent being inside the tardis is implausible and honestly a really random headcanon with no narrative significance although I suppose if it was confirmed, it could be a "Cave of Two Lovers" type of situation, where the creators "confirmed" something that simply didn't happen -- Aang and Katara didn't kiss in the cave, because that's how the show was written, but they retconned it later to please fans (even though the idea makes no sense)

Jacob King

Schrödinger’s pregnancy! I like the design for the silence. In ufology there’s a whole concept of the men in black as a type of alien phenomena. It does raise the question of whether the silence spent 400 years influencing men’s fashion just so they could get to suits or do they always dress in contemporary clothes.

Sibbiq

I forgot how heartbreaking the kiss scene is when they drive home that it's River's last kiss with the Doctor.

Dani

An excellent two parter to start the season and establish new questions/plot lines. I will say though the first time I watched I was also feeling very confused and like I got one thing answered and 20 new questions added to my list.

Jay Willis

Yea I forgot until she said “that’s it?” And my heart instantly broke as I remembered.

Jay Willis

It’s also just a terrible preamble lol

Paulo

Yeah

Leo Cap

I mean, does it "suck" from a storytelling perspective? i'm curious what you mean by that

Paulo

It sucks when they leave episode is left in a cliffhanger .

LogicSequence

Might have already been said, but River didn't have a backup plan when she jumped off the roof, she just knows that in some point in time the doctor will hear what she did and he'll come and save her, a literal leap of faith if you will.

LogicSequence

Yeah unfortunately this is a fan theory that was postulated to be the answer to a hint Moffat gave about something coming in a later season. It was not correct for either circumstance, but i was a popular theory so i can understand why it's remembered this way.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Man, rewatching this is a treat. Because now I can see all the little connections, the early setups, the hints, the foreshadowings. I can see the overall picture that Moffat is creating. And all I can say is, Angela, it will all make sense in the end. And it's going to be a hell of a ride.

Jordan Boulton

Your head is going to fall off half way through this season 😂😂

Ben “Bentendo” Dawson

Moffat is just at his best over the next two years, some of the narratives and the way they thread together is so well figured out. And on a rewatch there are some really rewarding one liners [even in this episode] that make so much sense the second time around. Such a brilliant journey for you to be going on the first time around... the girl regenerating at the end of this episode was my first proper jaw drop moment watching NuWho at the time.

Lazzy

I was pretty young when I first saw the show. I'm older and wiser now and I have a much, much larger appreciation for Rory and Arthur's performance in the role. The guy slays.
