Event Horizon FULL LENGTH Movie Reaction

FULL LENGTH REACTION

Where we’re going, we won’t need eyes to react…

Chris Skalicky

Based on what I know about this one, I'm never going to watch this movie lol

Merkavar

I double dare you :P

Patrick Waldeck

Remember guardsman, always check your geller fields before jumping through the Warp.

Vexkun

I understood that reference. :p

Vexkun

The real question is can I make through this reaction... We are so evil for voting for this one. :p This could easily be Warhammer 40k story. ;p

I generally am not a fan of horror, I typically find it a boring comedy of errors. There's a few like this one that I love that I put on par with the thing where, its not just horror for the sake of horror, but a large thriller element which I also find those mid to late 90s thrillers to be the best of the genre, practical effects polished by minor cgi with an emphasis on the delivery not the visual per se. This one like the thing really shines, where the crew were not incompetent victims (lambs to the slaughter like most horror). They were smart, technical, capable team of people fighting for survival in a battle of wits. Way more fun!!!

Paulo

I didn’t watch it I just wanted to see the thumbnail you put, yep that tracks.

Blackout

Oh you shouldn’t have watched this one.

Zephyr (AD)

Huzzah! I'm so glad you liked this. It's by far my favorite "horror" film, for the atmosphere and story telling. Another Sam Neill film from this era is "In the Mouth of Madness" (1994). And I hope Alien (1979) makes a poll some day since you mentioned you hadn't seen that either. The original Alien holds up astonishingly well and is worth the watch.

Blackout

It is. But it’s a tough one.

I probably never would have watched this if nobody ever mentioned it. I think this movie looks better than most movies you see today, some of the CG might not be the best, but the ship itself you can see isn't CG, but miniature scale model which you don't see anymore in movies today, because they always go for full CG, with green or blue screen. With miniature scale models you get sharpness of details than you can't quite get with CG, it adds a bit more realism to it's design. The small scale CG that exists with the water and other small props are pretty dated for something in 1997. But back then CG wasn't really well used because it was still pretty NEW technology for film making and people having to develop the software for things. I'd say it's about on par to other movies similar of its time, The Matrix came out in 1999 so just a few years after this movie, there's another movie that comes to mind but I'm struggling to remember the name of that involved a water creature entity that could morph, and then there's the movie Independence Day which came out in 1996. When I try to think what movies came out in 1990s its really hard to remember a lot of them... Titanic (1997), Toy Story 2 (1999), The Truman Show (1998), those are all I can remember right now.

When I was young (and even now as an adult), I am an absolute wuss when it comes to scary movies. I saw this at like 14 years old and I was convinced it was the scariest movie ever made and I saw red eyes for a week. But I have really cool friends and family that convince me to watch certain scary movies because they're movies I'd enjoy. Such as Exorcist, The Thing, It Follows, etc..

Patrick Waldeck

Philip Eisner, the screenwriter, has come out and said that 40k was a huge influence for this movie. He's a huge Warhammer fan and admitted that either consciously or subconsciously it rubbed off on him.

Patrick Waldeck

Event Horizon and The Thing are great examples of competent protagonists who pretty much do everything they can right. It's just never enough, because their opponent if far beyond their reckoning.

David

It wasn't a nebula, they said the ship was in the atmosphere of of Neptune, and yes, Neptune has active weather and lightning specifically.

Paul Mix

Angela, if you haven't seen Alien, boy do you need to. While the Expanse may be top dog for realism in space, in 1979 Alien set the bar for the OG "lived-in" sci-fi aesthetic, immersing you with incredible grungy sets, and then introducing characters who looked and behaved exactly as you would expect in such a scenario ("truck drivers in space"). And then proceeded to use that atmosphere against you as it became the stalking ground of arguably the most terrifyingly iconic species in sci-fi.

travel through the warp without the protection of a Geller field is ill advised at best.

I was a video manager at a hastings store once upon a time and Event Horizen was the movie I suggested to everyone looking for spookiness. never received a bad review.

Lintrinsic

I love this movie, it scratches my sci-fi itch and horror itch at the same time. You absolutely should react to Alien (1976) at some point. Although the sequel Aliens (1986) is more my favourite.

Rime Pendragon

Event Horizon seems a perfectly normal name to me, there is nothing inherently ominous about an event horizon.

Nathaniel Castle

Event Horizon has been one of my sci-fi loves as a young man and definitely influenced my early games of cyberpunk 2020 (TTRPG). your right though with a few modern touch ups it could ramp up the quality and with a little bit more graphics with the mental flashes and video of the old crew i think we could push this movie into full blown horror. Great reaction as always though looking forward to the next movie. oh and the alien movies are a must watch!

Lloyd Brady

While not my favorite sci-fi/horror film, it certainly has a great cast. Also, every time I see Sean Pertwee I can’t help but think how much like his dad he looks - it’s the eyes and nose in particular. I live for the day when someone decides to have the 3rd Doctor show up in modern Doctor Who, with Sean donning his father’s velvet cloak and raising a quizzical eyebrow.

Cody Eckert

I think not having seen Alien is actually a felony.

TGrimace

"I've seen lots of things with living ships. I think this living ship is evil!" Yeah.... Not exactly Moya, was it?

Annica13

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out, and I loved it. I make a point of watching it again every few years because it’s one of those movies that you never forget. It’s also what I always think of when I watch the Doctor Who episodes The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit. Toby with the runes all over him standing out on the planet and beckoning to his crew mate just gives me the same vibes as Dr. Weir.

Cei Stockport

You noticed that Smith was instantly freaked out by the ship even though he never saw or heard anything. He was also the only one who has obviously religious (crucifix tattoo on his back, rosary hanging next to his seat, crossing himself and saying a quick prayer before getting into the tank). Apparently even in M3 faith helps mentally against the Neverborn.

Never understood the prejudice against the Nightmare Drive just because it pierces the terrorscape that floats just above our own like an ever hungry sleep paralysis demon
