Another moment of world-building/magic-building that I love so much in this episode. And generally I don't look for the history or makeup of magic in shows like this. But this show just really knocks it out of the park for me. The explanation of defensive magic, how it's designed to fight against magic - and thus the best strategy is to just fucking throw rocks at each other using magic makes so much sense to me. If they made the defensive magic too complicated, they can't cast it quickly enough to actually defend themselves (and probably drains unnecessary mana too). It's just things like that which make me think the writer thought long and hard about every part of this magic system. It's so inspired.

(Richter about to get thrashed with water) Angela: "I personally love this for you... they're not going to drown, right?" HAHA! Frieren destroying the barrier and everyone's reaction is one of those epic moments that make this anime series so great!

Lazzy

It says so much about Frieren that she spent so much time and effort on accomplishing the "impossible" task of shattering the barrier just because she felt sorry for Kanne being unable to use magic freely. Also, I know you miss Stark -- I do too -- but this arc is basically Frieren and Fern's arc. That's why their relationship is shown so much in the opening and outro.

I especially like the role that imagination and ingenuity play in this magic system. It puts a degree of unpredictability into matchups. And that's a refreshing alternative to the rigid dynamics of systems from other shows that inevitably lead to tedious powerscaling debates.

Absolutely, and there are upcoming things in this season that I'm sure I'll gush about in relation to that too.

Kyle Taggart

I love the line "Then never is here!" because Frieren does the "impossible"!

I think what's great about this show is they can write in whatever they want to the past after Himmel the Hero and Frieren's past so you don't accidentally go back and retcon something that happened.
