the opening credit animations and music are so good.

If you ever need to confirm the pronunciation of Uk'otoa, you only need to search for the Uk'otoa Sea Shanty on YouTube. CR released an Uk'otoa boardgame a few years ago and made a sea shanty video to promote it. The song was written by Taliesin and Dani Carr and performed by Tal, Sam, Ashley, and game designer Steve Failows. It was just covered a week ago by the incredible acapella group VoicePlay(one of their members is a critter). (hope Patreon allows the links) Official video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7TN0ZRPthM VoicePlay version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=838KXLHrrlE obligatory whisper: [uk'otoa]

Fjord being bad at the hammer game is a slight nod to how his actual strength stat in game was pretty bad. He had an 11 in both Strength and Dexterity, which is pretty much bog standard average. He does have a great Constitution and Charisma though. Jester has a 16 strength and 17 dexterity, meaning she is technically MUCH stronger and faster than Fjord.

Doesn't really have relevance to the story, but since you asked. Both Jester and Molly are Tieflings, sort of a low tier demonic race. Tieflings typically come with horns a tail and come in a wide variety of colors. Zahra from Vox Machina Season 2 & 3 is also a Tiefling.

The first two episodes were before the campaign itself, this episode does actually happen at the beginning of the campaign but the details are different. So far I'm really enjoying the show, I like that they're taking their time and I'm really interested to see how much they cover by the end of the season. Oh and Critical Role have Molly's Oracle/Tarot deck in their store and they released it during the campaign, the artwork is beautiful. I absolutely adore Molly!

Also is likely harkening back to the harvest festival early in the campaign where Fjord tried to throw the sandbag over his head in the Trebuchet contest and rolled three natural 1s across his three attempts.

*whisper* Uk'otoa

Frank (MetronV) Izzy

Yeah, I literally just watched that scene with the three nat 1's (because of disadvantage) on TikTok yesterday :D

You more or less got it in one for the Meta reason they were named the Mighty Nein. They rolled 24 9s in episodes 3 and 5, 17 in episode 7, and then were point blank asked to come up with a name. They had been goofing off and saying *nein* whenever they rolled a 9 so Caleb said they were called the Mighty Nein in response to that question. I don't think that's really a spoiler, they more or less made it as a goof based on their terrible dice luck, which did appear to improve over time based on the graph I'm referencing for this post

K0ppar

The "dandy as a de Rolo" line isn't meta, Vox Machina and Mighty Nein are set in the same world just different continents iirc

I also think it's a nod to Molly being Tal's backup character from campaign 1. If Percy had permanently died, Molly(or a proto-version of him) would have joined VM. Tal's idea was that VM would have come across a performer(Molly) telling/singing the tale of "The Terrible Tinker of Tal'Dorei".

Frank (MetronV) Izzy

Man, Caleb, Nott & Bo caused a LOT of death and destruction at the Carnival. Mongo is appalled. Unintentional, granted, but ho boy. I wonder how that's going to play out.

swilkins08

Something having an in-universe explanation doesn't mean its not meta. There was a reason it was Molly who said that particular phrase and not another character.

Nathanael Fuller (Polygon Wizard)

Also, just putting this out there because I find it amusing how things work out. Episode 3 of season 1 of The Legend of Vox Machina and episode 3 of season 1 of The Mighty Nein both end with the group of main characters getting arrested.

Nate

I think you're going to really enjoy The Mighty Nein. Just based off your reaction to Farscape. Vox Machina was more of the typical hero story, but Mighty Nein (similar to Farscape) is just a bunch of broken sexy people who try to make it through life, and stumble into grand schemes.

The Lore Merchant

A couple of Easter eggs: When Jester and Fjord are in the tent with mirrors and are seen as "human" as they pass one mirror, their reflections are Travis and Laura. Trinket (from VM) appears as one of the stuffed animals in the prize booth.

Moricant

I liked the mention of Nott and Caleb’s various named scams. They started out the campaign by running Money Pot on Jester.

Love this show

For sure, M9 also takes place 20 years after Vox Machina's conclusion, so tales of their renown have been told have reached places far and wide. As someone pointed out though, it doesn't mean it isn't meta.

Vanessa Aves

Molly is fantastic, and I love the adaptation of his character. They streamlined him, just like they streamlined Beau's traits. Tal was historically bad at staying in his Irish accent, so redemption for him is fully justified! He nails it.

Vanessa Aves

Not just Trinket, there is a Grog, a Percy and I think a Pike!
