I would argue that commander Erwin was not a devil but to explain why would require a spoilers so I won’t yet

PLEASE STOP CALLING ZEKE ZACHARY. Thanks love you k bye

Michael Weir

I can't wait to see your reaction to the next episode,

Alex

Well done Angela you’ve made it through the other side of S3.16-18 “the trilogy of pain”! It hits just as hard with each rewatch. At least for me anyway lol. Now i’d very much like to say it gets easier and this is the peak emotional damage caused by this show but the thing is, well, friends don’t lie.

Nerf Or Nothing

If it helps Armin wouldn't have been in pain because of the full body third degree burns. No nerves left. not much of a silver lining though...

Howie

I was going to suggest we should play a drinking game for how many time you call Zeke, Zachary? 🤣 But you finally corrected yourself! No syncing countdown for this reaction? Hero and Midnight Sun are arguably the best back-to-back AoT episodes (if not all of anime). Great writing and acting all around from both Japanese and English VAs. And let's not forget the Zeke knowing Eren's father reveal!

The thing is, Erwin outright admitted that he willingly lied to and sacrificed so many scouts all for the singular goal of discovering the truth about the world. That alone puts me off from bringing him back to life. Erwin was selfish. Armin was self*less*. That alone is enough of a difference maker to me. As an aside, just because Erwin is selfish doesn't make him a bad character; I love him as a character, his flaws make him feel human, and I completely get why he did what he did over the course of his military career.

With how clueless we are with titan power stealing, it would be a huge risk to do anything but choosing one person to take the power. If injecting them both works, they'll both be pure titans, and they likely wouldn't share Bertholdt (Titans just don't really care). We don't know if the shifter needs to be alive to steal the power, so splitting him in half would risk losing 3 important people. Whether or not any of those choices would sadly isn't a factor in a tense situation like that. Can't risk experimenting.

God, this episode was so gut-wrenching. Having to choose between Armin and Erwin was so painful to watch, cause in the end, you know that no matter who was saved, you're gonna lose the other😢.

This whole arc is abolsute cinema

Twisted Glass

If I understand it correctly, the contents of the syringe need to be extracted from the spine as it's spinal fluid, but it can be injected anywhere in the body. Not saying it's realistic, just you know, ✨ anime magic ✨

DudeTrue

I got there, big relief :P

To add to this, not even Erwin himself knew what he was going to do if he ever was going to fulfill the dream he shared with his father. Meaning, he might have had an entirely different personality after the efforts to retake Wall Maria were concluded. His personality for being a leader were admitted by him to have been motivated by the sole desire to fulfill that dream, and upon doing so, his drive for being a leader most likely would vanish if he were the one brought back instead of Armin. There would have been no leader for the Scouts, afterwards. He might just take a backseat to the rest of this story's events, retired, and perhaps only presenting useful advice to the next Scouts leader as the elements we've all witnessed from his former leadership personality is gone.

Gosh, what a devastating episode. Fun fact about this episode, the only time they use music all episode was at the very end when Armin transforms, hence the no intro. The raw silence, especially as our characters mourn, is almost sadder to me than any sad song could be.

Jonah

Aye you figured out the zeke zack thing haha, yes zeke is the beast titan, zackery is from the interior.

Kevin Fog

If you wonder why these episodes doesn't have any recap at the beginning, it might be beacuse people tend to struggle remembering stuff when they get the titan powers. So I think our usual recapper might've missed something, when he chewed on Beethoven... Yeah, I know, I'll see myself out.

I'd hate to be the one having to choose between one person and the other. But it made very clear Ervin chose to die, and rather Armin being the one to save in his place. It's like he knew who the better option was, he really appreciates what Armin has given them, so it was only logically sound that it has to be him over himself, truly something a captain like Ervin knew best.

I think using one syringe on two people doesn’t seem very sanitary to me. 😂
