Notes from a Stranger Things fan: 1) The wormhole stuff didn't come out of the blue for me, because it feels like a natural continuation if you know the genre material they've been referencing since season one. It's been partially 80's horror movies (Nightmare on Elm Street, the Exorcist, Carrie) but also partially Lovecraftian horror (tentacles and horrifying monsters). Horror movies from the latter part of the 80s often had a space and science fiction bent to them (The Blob, Killer Klowns, They Live, The Abyss), and while Lovecraft is more known for nightmares and incomprehensible monsters, it is at its heart a cosmic horror about aliens from far beyond the stars. If this love letter to classic horror is going to have a monumentous finale, they really had to go cosmic. 2) In terms of the plot armour bubble that our protagonists seem to be living in, I have two explanations that won't necessarily excuse it, but might explain it? Often they save the real gut wrenching or significant deaths (Bob, Billy, Eddie) for the end of the season. For the grand finale of the entire show, they're going to want to save any big ones until that last episode. There's also the D&D connection, where everything is a genuine threat at low levels, then you reach a certain point where the only real threats to your party are the big bads. A bugbear that might have been your final boss for your introductory campaign becomes a minor mob at level 20. Not a great justification for a narrative, but the show has always leaned in to the D&D comparison. 3) Mama Wheeler! We spent the first four seasons of this show thinking that the Wheeler parents were kind of useless, when Nance and Mike were badasses (as is, now we see, Holly). It turns out, they got that from mama. If I remember correctly, Nancy once negatively compared the prospect of being with Steve as ending up like Karen, squandering potential for tedious stability. She means it insultingly, that she might be like Karen, yet ignores the other side of it: that Karen might be like her - an absolute badass hero. Not least to mention that she hauled an oxygen tank down to the basement to fight what she can presumably only be imagining is the same monster that put her in the hospital and her only motivation is to save someone *else's* kid. She does that because she hears the announcement directed at Lucas. This isn't just a mother displaying heroic strength in defence of her child; this a woman displaying heroic strength while horribly injured to face the nightmare monster from a world she'd never imagined that almost killed her in defence of her child's friend. MVP.
