Braca's mah BOY! I've wanted to say that every time you disparaged him. :D Chiana being the Karen Shaw that Maldis mentioned way back in season 1, episode 8(!) is very interesting. I have no idea why they decided to make it Chiana, but yes, yes, it was a great decision. "This girl is slow!"

Darren Withers

I’ve been dying to get to this point! Bet you didn’t think we’d get back to Earth before the finale, did you Angela! 🤣 The sad thing is this means Farscape is drawing to a close, only 10 more episodes, plus The Peacekeeper War to go, but it’s been a hell of a ride!

Robert T

I'm so happy you caught Karen Shaws significance.

Michael

The Challenger disaster was January 28, 1986. So, this episode would taken place during Halloween of 1985. The real-life captain was chosen in early 1986, so it's plausible that Jack stepped down from going after Halloween and his replacement was selected after than and announced in January.

the reveal that chiana is karen shaw still gives me the ick. just…no. the emotional moments in this ep hit really hard, especially after losing loved ones. don’t forget, john was tortured with the images of his mom being ill when the scarrans captured him the first time. also possible (likely) plot hole: john had his memories of american politics nixon to clinton removed when the diagnosan operated on the neural chip in his head. it’s possible the connections regrew or something I guess. but he shouldn’t really have any memory of reagan as president.

funnylilgalreacts

The “remember Karen Shaw!”’s left in the comments a while back stuck with me

I don’t know if it great, it’s weird, but also I know Chiana loves John so it’s fitting

Now you know why John and Chiana have such a strong, somewhat sexually charged relationship. Actually, this reality was only created by John going through the wormhole in the last episode, before this reality his father was never scheduled to go on the Challenger, he went into the burning building of his own accord, and Chiana had never stepped on Earth. It’s The Terminator paradox again.

Karen Shaw Legendary Status Confirmed.

WinterScape

Wow! It never registered that he should have blanked on politics. Good catch!

This 3-episode arc is one of my favorite of the series. Often rewatch. It’s also a great encapsulation of the Farscape writers' room. David Kemper getting all Einstein on us, Justin Monjo—all the emotions, and next up “froonium” Ricky Manning. Yeah!

I mean, the John/Chiana relationship was already pretty messed up, with the "siblings who really wanna fuck" dynamic, so why not pile on another level? Chiana has never been what you'd call principled, and I always saw this as her taking what she could because the John she knows will never be with her. I'd have said John should be judged for cheating on Kim, but it seemed like she was very happy to flirt with the significantly older, hot guy who showed up out of nowhere. I always loved Aeryn calling the little girl on Sesame Street slow. But she really is making progress with English. And Rygel discovering refined sugar was an inspired subplot. It's not illegal, but it should be. Great cliffhanger. This show was so good at giving you a whole new set of questions to ask at the end of an episode.

This theory of time travel is never my favourite - the 'change the past and our present changes' is a fun narrative device, but it never makes sense to me. I always prefer the idea that your past can't be changed, but if you change the past, it will create a new timeline that happened to another you. But in Farscape logic, John will now remember having sex with Chiana, as his one clear memory of that day. And, as Angela said, what an experience it would be to lose it to a person as... experienced and creative as her.

Notes from a Farscape fan: I think this episode largely stands without need for much analysis. Just a fun time travel shenanigans episode with some character insight. 1) As you said in the summary: Braca is definitely a little bitch, but he's Scorpy's little bitch. Such an interesting character to get to play. He's not the big villain, but he's also not the scary henchman archetype. He's kind of the weaselly suck-up archetype, but he's out there doing his own thing as well, so that doesn't really fit either. At the end of the day...he's just Scorpy's little bitch, and they're both very happy with that dynamic. Good for them? I think? 2) There are some sweet emotional moments between Crichton and his family and his past self, and Aeryn comforting him about his mother - something of which she has some degree of personal experience - and yet the scene I can't stop thinking about is the cop at the end obsessively fawning over the incomprehensible alien artefact that is...a pumpkin carved by Rygel on a sugar high. 3) On the date: the episode was released in the US at the start of 2003, so yeah they returned to the present. It's just horrifying to think that this episode was as far back as 2003. There are grown ass adults out here who have been legally drinking for years who are younger than this episode. Just typing that out made my back hurt and my joints ache.

Best season yet. Best 3 episodes of the season...so far. Curious that John didn't recognize that Chiana looked like Karen Shaw when he first met her.

I was 9 at the start of 1986, and it is one of the first years that I still have fairly clear memories of. We didn't watch the launch live, but we were told about the explosion at school the day it happened. The first time I watched the footage of the explosion was on the news after school. I can't recall exactly how I felt at the time, but to this day that footage brings me to tears, even the brief clip from this episode.
