Here we gooo... A fun little episode of Doctor Who! ❤️

Ben

Haven't watched the reaction yet so not sure on your feelings towards how the villain is delt with so easily by basically just the sonic screwdriver but Steven Berkoff who played the shakri was apparently a complete nightmare to work with as he kept purposely messing up takes and going against the directors orders so the ending had to be cobbled together with what little usable footage they had!

Leo Cap

another installment in Eleven's running gag of disgust for twitter lol

funnylilgalreacts

That actually explained so much about this episode! I totally thought he was pointless

Alkaris

I hope you know that with the Xmas Special that appears mid-series comes after Episode 5 but before Episode 6, its important for correct watch order.

I can't watch this at the moment, but I only remember this episode because of how relatable The Doctor was about doing nothing and waiting. I hate waiting while doing nothing!

Nathan

I SAW THAT HAND MOTION WHEN BRIAN SAID 67 (i cant escape it either its like a sleeper agent activation)

James Fleischman

My personal retcon is that Amy using the defibrillator actually damaged the Doctor enough to engage the Time Lord self healing but not enough to trigger a full regeneration.

Ash Davis

Yay we finally got to Kate Stewart! The Brigadier was such a staple character of the show back in the classic series! I’m so happy Angela finally got to meet Kate! So exciting! Also, it’s very much implied that A Town Called Mercy happens DURING the events of Power of Three (Rory leaving his phone charger in King Henry’s bedroom is mentioned in A Town Called Mercy, but we actually see it occur when the Doctor steals Amy and Rory away during the party in Power of Three)

Gallows Girl Amy

Yeah, it was a huge disappointment as I had been a huge fan of Stephen Berkoff when I was studying drama, many years ago, but his ego seems to have got the better of him in old age. He's best known for his theatre work although he was the main villain Beverly Hills Cop.

Nathaniel Castle

Wonderful build up followed by a boring culmination. Still the character parts are quite lovely

John

Stop it. Just let Angela enjoy the episodes with trying to prep her.

I love this episode, as I usually do when they're more about relationships than plot. One thing: I realize you're doing it in defense of Rory, but I'm surprised you object so much to them being called the Ponds. I know you know this, but it's only custom that the woman take the man's last name, and the custom doesn't have a great history, having to do with the woman becoming the property of her husband. Which is why lots of couples today don't do that, either hyphenating or keeping their own names, or in rare cases the man taking the woman's name. (Not to mention same-sex couples!) Obviously the wink on the show is that Amy has the more "alpha" personality while Rory is more of the caregiver and nurturer, so the traditional gender roles are somewhat reversed in their relationship. But also why should the Doctor, who's traveled the universe and seen every possible social configuration, particularly care about what's customary in the west on Earth? He knew Amy first and best, so he thinks of them as Ponds. It's a gentle poke at gender conventions and I appreciate it for that.

A fairly good episode, though let down by the climax due to reasons others have already discussed. My big issue with the episode, however, is why did the alien portal manifest in the hospital Rory worked at? Why couldn't they have detected an energy signature from the hospital and he goes in undercover as himself to investigate? I assume the kidnapped people in the ship were collected over the course of the year and used for experimentation in the final development of the cube's systems, and Brian rolled all their gurneys out through the portal while The Doctor, Rory, and Amy were listening to the propaganda computer. And the little girl was an android - probably one at each of the seven locations, and the android will be collected by UNIT.

Creatures of hope;living in Minneapolis, I believe that.

Regarding your final thoughts at the end, I think you hit the nail on the head for this particular Doctor Who writer. He comes up with a lot of ideas, which are often fun and whimsical, but his crafting of meaningful adversaries with believable motives and backstories tends to fall a bit flat.

Lucky I didn't stay up to watch this. Uploaded at like 5am my time, several hours later than normal.

J.W. Moore

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was a companion of Classic Who. He met the 2nd Doctor in a couple of stories and then became a companion when the 3rd Doctor worked for UNIT. Then an off-and-on-again companion of the 4th Doctor and then make sporadic appearances for the rest of Classic Who. He was a stoic, dry-humor man but was loyal and honorable.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Regarding Stargate SG-1, IF you decide to watch it, A) rewatching the movie might be worth it for a refresher (although the show makes a bunch of retcons), and B) Ben Browder doesn't star in it until seasons 9 and 10 (of 10) and the DVD movies. A great show, but you'd probably want find another reason to watch it than Ben. Also, I thought the Doctor's fear of being shocked by a defibrillator may have been a nod to Doctor Who: The Movie, wherein the Seventh Doctor was accidentally killed by one by doctors trying to save him from a bullet wound and not knowing that he was alien. Said shock leads to his death and regeneration into the Eighth Doctor.

No spoiler here, but... hoping the folk who line this stuff up for you adds the ESSENTIAL minisode for after next episode. If I remember correctly, it's more a storyboard of what would have been a full minisode, but it's essential to the this story arc that you watch it after the next episode. It's absolutely vital that you watch it after the next episode before moving on. The BBC has it on their YouTube channel as: Doctor Who: P.S. - Series 7 2012 - BBC

Jordan Boulton

Hey Anglea! Don’t know how far ahead your filming is, but at the end of the series there’s a huge spoiler in the opening titles that will ruin your reaction. If you can get someone to blur/edit! (I’ve seen a couple of reactors fall victim to this😅)

Agnarr

Good call. First special isn't it?

John B

To avoid the spoiler cover your eyes when the opening credits start. When you hear dialogue again you are safe. After you watch the episode go back and rewatch the opening. It is very fun!

Ben “Bentendo” Dawson

I forgot this was when we first meet Kate and the modern version of UNIT, one of Moffat's brilliant long term additions to the Whoniverse and was done in such a lovely way to merge old school Brigadier military with modern Science thanks to him knowing The Doctor. You HAVE to make sure a minisode / deleted scene is watched straight after the next episode that has been eluded to in comments below. I think it should be a rare occasion that you include it in your reaction: Doctor Who: P.S. - Series 7 2012 - BBC

OMG THEY JUST LEFT THOSE PEOPLE IN THE SHIP TO DIE!!! What the hell I just notice that and I re watch doctor who once a year

ZapWing

The Doctor's impatience and the look Rory had near the beginning with the Doc's protestations of boredom, lmao. That's the exact look a father-in-law gives. And the Doctor whining about "waiting" when Rory stood by the Pandorica for 2000 years. Guess we know vigilance runs in the Williams family.

Dylan Humphries

"I just want everything to go on forever, and just have something creative an new be put in front of us." - Said The Doctor.
