WOW... when I first watched this, I thought the Connie's Japanese VA was amazing, but Connie's English VA did an equally great job. An all around powerful and devastating episode. Some items of note: When Magath apologized and bowed to them, it was a big deal for the Japanese viewers. In the original Japanese, for an elder and leader to bow and make such a sincere apology, it was a HUGE gesture of humility. And the name of the episode, "Traitor." You asked in the beginning, who is it? Just like the amazing "Hero" episode, who was the hero? And we know how much Connie hates traitors, so that makes the ending every more heartbreakingly powerful. Along with him recalling Bertolt's words... it must have haunted him!

I love this episode because it shows that even with "righteousness" at heart (like the main crew in this episode, the warriors that breached the wall, etc..), eventually you will have to kill people who just hold different points of views (like Samual and Daz, who are the characters Sasha and Historia saved back in Season 1 by the way, as well as the most of the Yaegerists who I believe simply does not want their friends and families killed by the outside world). With one kill after another, one inevitably becomes no different from the devils one claims to be stopping.

Only two more weeks of AOT left for the channel

Poor Connie will never be the same. He lost his entire village, his mother was turned into a titan, which might as well be death, he was betrayed by people that he saw as his friends and comrades. He lost a part of himself when Sasha died and here, he had to do the same thing Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt had to do and kill people that were once his comrades and were also in the same cadet core from day 1 😢

Downeast Beast

Remember Daz? He was the one who wanted to go AWOL during the Trost situation in season 1, he was rescued by Krista and Ymir in the snowstorm in season 2, he's been through a lot. Samuel, I don't remember nearly as well. Sidenote, I really appreciate that Onyankopon is not depicted as a racist caricature, Japan is notorious for that with regard to people of color. I caught the detail that his palms are lighter than the rest of his skin. Big props to the design team.

In reference to Floch working out Armin was lying, Tragic: Guy you lowkey hate is competent

Just so you know, the Great Titan War ended 100 years ago, which is when then King Fritz fled to Paradis and erected the walls. 2000 years ago is when it started and then for roughly 1900 years the Eldian empire persisted and subjugated basically the entire planet.

The ending of this episode always makes me cry. I think it's the only time this anime made me cry.

BurntMitski

look up the lyrics to the opening, they're really good

Another powerful episode. That ending with Connie was harrowing.

Both the Japanese and the English dub for AOT feature S-tier voice acting.

Online, I always see people praising Floch. He's seriously a fan favorite for a large portion of the viewer base. I agree with you, though. He's a single-minded power freak who gets off on abusing the tiniest bit of power he was given. Unfortunately, he is also extremely smart.
