Thomas Thomas like "TomTom" the GPS system... xD

Michael French

Maybe someone said it in the edited version comments, but this was supposed to be a back door pilot for these characters for a spinoff. Unfortunately, it never got made except that kind of did… There’s a company called Big Finish that over. The decades has made well over 1000 different Doctor Who related to audio stories, and one of them happens to be it’s been off of these characters that you love so much. Though I don’t suggest investigating that site because it does have spoilers for future actor that you will be seeing in the show itself

Michael French

The Australian he was trying to get to an airport is a reference to that they were a companion of the old series

Arronax06

That reference is usually lost on people from the US, they didn't use TomTom as much as people in Europe, where there were commercials for it everywhere at the time :)

Mrs O

Thomas Thomas = Tom Tom as in human GPS 🙂

Cirieno

"Brave heart, Tegan!"

Alkaris

I wasn't a fan of this episode in particular originally, and still don't like it all that much as I see this episode again. The monster they supposedly had just doesn't seem all that interesting or all that threatening. I wont deny the comedy of Strax is pretty good however, I do like the Madame Vastra trio also to be fun and interesting characters at the same time.

DieWinterkirsche

Oh, I didn´t know that TomTom isn´t a huge thing in the US. That moment is so silly xD

dean worrall

it's definitely giving "Vampires of Venice" vibes.... a very simlar story..

Ben

Fun fact, Mrs Gillyflower and Ada are actually Mother and Daughter in real life as well!

Lintrinsic

I'd forgotten the Tomtom sat nav joke in this episode.

Michael Cyr

It's crazy that Mrs. Gillyflower is played by the same actress that played Emma Peel in The Avengers.

Ash Davis

This is easily my favorite Gatiss story. This and Cold War were the best scripts he’s ever written. I’m honestly not a huge fan of his writing as a whole, but even I have to admit his Series 7 scripts were top notch.

James Fleischman

Maybe you know Thomas Thomas's cousin G. Armin?

Gallows Girl Amy

I don't know if it was deliberate, but I love Jenny pretty much channeling Dame Diana Rigg's most iconic role by kicking butt wearing a leather catsuit. I spent many a happy hour watching her as Mrs Peel alongside John Steed (Patrick McNee) in reruns of The Avengers as a kid. Not, of course to be confused with the Marvel franchise of the same name.

Spoilers!!!!!!!

This is Doctor Who goofiness at it's best, just a funny and good watch. Everyone loves Strax, Jenny and Vastra - How could you not! Him threatening the horse genuinely made me LOL first time I saw it lol And the wrong hands line is actually quite funny too. Not sure if it was in America but the UK had an early sat nav called a Tom Tom, so Thomas Thomas is basically the sat nav.

Ejigantor

I've seen people online refer to the trio of Vastra, Jenny, and Strax as "the Paternostra gang" but I don't know why or where that comes from. Personally, I think we get exactly the right amount of them. They're fun when they show up, but having them every episode would quickly drive the running gags into the ground. Overall I think it's a good episode, and a fun adventure. And while it is only a Doctor-lightish episode, in that he's absent only through the first act, it takes until the third act to bring in Clara. Not that I think that means anything other than that the episode was focused on the Victorian trio for much of it, so once The Doctor enters Jenny and Vastra get to have some time interacting with him. Once Clara joins they're only in a group for a bit before team TARDIS and team Trio split up. The Tomtom joke didn't stand the test of time, but I think that's fine; all art is a reflection of the time and society in which it is created, and the joke absolutely landed when it first aired.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Namely, Tegan Jovanka, companion of the Fourth and Fifth Doctors.

Nicholas Sulikowski

As an American, I didn't know what TomTom is. But I could still recognize the character's speech pattern as sounding like GPS navigation. So I assumed it was some inside joke about that.

Joe Cleveland

According to a prequel minisode to "The Snowmen" called "The Great Detective" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G17_B4uACgg the trio lives on Paternoster Row, hence the name. "Paternoster" isn't mentioned in the episodes we've seen. However, in the novelization of this episode, Jenny tells us, "We'd been set up there at No. 13, Paternoster Row for quite a few years and a very cosy little situation it had become."

Joe Cleveland

The Paternoster gang is always a delight! (Their audio adventures produced by Big Finish are excellent, if you ever want more.) The novelization of this episode is also a lot of fun. It starts with narration by Jenny: "To Madam Vastra, I am always _the_ Woman. Or at least I should bleeding well hope so." (The audiobook is read in the voices of Jenny and Strax, so that's fun, too!)

Brian Huget

Yes, Tom Tom nav was in the USA.

Ejigantor

Thank you! I'm pretty sure I watched that minisode when it was originally released, but I didn't catch the street name.

John

I don't know why the Paternoster Gang would be confused about Clara reappearing. They know the Doctor is a time traveler. If I were them, I'd assume he went back in time and brought her there from before she died.

Paulo

Eeewwwwww. that thing was gross.🤮
