I'm so happy I watched these! They definitely helped with context while also confusing the heck out of me. Like Doctor Who typically does 😅

Ben

For context on the eighth doctor you saw in Night of the Doctor, he only ever appeared in one story - The TV Movie which was intended to be a pilot for an American reboot in 1996 - so his regeneration was never seen so this minisode was a BIG deal when it came out and all those names of companions he mentioned were from all the audio stories he has done. Also, it was released on Paul McGann's birthday a week before the 50th anniversary.

Robert A.

Paul McGann was/is the Eighth Doctor. When this got posted to YouTube I was so shocked at his voice I yelped...in the office, at work. Oops! Karn was last seen in the Fourth Doctor era.

john

And just to add: it’s not required watching, but it is good to check out just to see McGann’s performance. It’s not the best movie, but he did a great job with the role. The most underrated doctor.

David Gaynor

I remember VIVIDLY watching this. I was sitting in my room and my dad called me downstairs before he went to work that night and said there's something Doctor Who on iPlayer (BBC streaming service). I went downstairs and he put it on. We both freaked out at seeing Mcgan back in Doctor Who. It gives me goosebumps every time I watch this

Marc Alg

Think back to Christopher he tells the chained up dalek how he destroyed them and the time lords in the time war.... that's all I'm saying :)

Ejigantor

"Will it hurt?" It'll JOHN Hurt!

Michael French

So before Paul McGann(the eighth Doctor, who only ever had one TV appearance by the way in a TV movie) regenerates, he list out a name of former companions. Those companions were exclusively in the big finish audio adventures, which at the very least makes his adventures cannon. They’ve been making audio Doctor Who for over 20 years so not everything lines up perfectly with TV Cannon, but they are always make an effort. But I wouldn’t go onto that website just yet, you’ll get spoiled on future doctors and/or villains, but they do have a bunch of Doctor Who stories that feature David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston back in the role so you could finally get your fix of more of them.

Brian

Oddly enough, Paul McGann was the Eighth Doctor for a TV Movie for his one appearance. But thanks to Big Finish (audio stories) he probably has the most stories of all the Doctors, classic and NuWho. In a way, he’s kind of the bridge between Classic Who and NuWho.

Cody Thomas Sinclair

Paul is the Eighth Doctor and his main appearance is in the Doctor Who movie released in the 90s, but the vast majority of his appearances are in the Big Finish audio dramas which are still ongoing. He’s a fantastic Doctor and I always hope for more appearances from him.

John the Rambling Scriblerian

I remember when his tv movie came out, I was SO excited after having not had Doctor Who for a few years. I tend to cheer a lot in these episodes... and yeah, I cheered here!

All the names the Doctor lists pre-regeneration are his companions during the audio-dramas (up to that point), the first time they'd been acknowledged in the show and giving them a firmer foothold in the canon. Mcgann is one of my favorite Doctors personality wise, so often he's just a sarcastic little sob to anyone and everyone whose getting on his nerves.

Doctor: "By fighting. On the front line. I was there at the fall of Arcadia. Someday I might even come to terms with that..."

Fr. Brench

Night of the Doctor was such an amazing surprise to us, it was not previewed, trailered, or anything! Being an 8th Doctor fan, this was a dream come true <3

VisceraSandwich

"Is it a special night?" I suppose so "Is it a celebration" Definitely not "Is it a birthday party?" Kinda?

Michael Siegel

Karn and the Sisterhood were at the center of the classic episode Brain of Morbius, which was ... interesting but very good.

Cody Eckert

In retrospect, while not required, it may have been good for you to have the context of the TV movie under your belt for the 8th Doctor reveal in Night lmao. On the other hand, people telling you to watch that before Night may have spoiled this for you. But I love that webisode. Paul just oozes "Doctor". I am a movie apologist and I remember watching this webisode as a kid and hearing the "I'm a doctor" and knowing instantly who's voice it was. While I haven't listened to any of them myself, if you want more of Paul's 8th Doctor I have heard his Big Finish audios are very good.

David Vandervliet

amazingly John Hurt recorded 12 Big Finish audio dramas as the war doctor.

Ben “Bentendo” Dawson

My Doctor! Only got a 1996 TV Movie but has done SO many audio dramas still to this day! Technically the longest serving Doctor as between 1996 and 2013 he hadn’t regenerated 😉 but a brilliant surprise gift from Moffat here.

Firefly24601

Brain of Morbius was my first-ever serial of Doctor Who! (when it was on repeat years later)

Firefly24601

The Flame of... Utter Boredom. lol!

Firefly24601

No matter how much context you get with Doctor Who, you'll need context FOR that context! 😂

Ash Davis

“It comes in threes.” In more ways than one… “Dear God… Three of them. All my worst nightmares at once!” Hehehe

Michael Siegel

I don't know if this was the case for you, but our local PBS had the copy that let out the music and sound effects for the first two episodes. It still seems a bit odd when I watch the DVD, which has them restored.

Mrs O

The 8th Doctor was my first doctor. I was going through a rough time and the tv movie was on and loved the show ever since. I have actually met Paul mcgann in person twice back in 2018, he is lovely and said he liked the boots I was wearing at the time!! ☺️

D

Yeah, not to be a Debby Downer but whoever was on the committee to pick the pre-50th lineup really dropped the ball lol. Without the context of the movie, Night of the Doctor has almost zero weight (plus the context of nobody knowing what happened between 8 and 9 was a huge part of being a Who fan at the time, which Angela now won't get to experience). Queueing Adventure in Time and Space but not the movie was a wild decision.

Ben

It would have helped if Angela had seen the TV movie aswell granted but you have to think about time restrictions, she/her editors only have so many hours in the day and it was probably already alot for her to do 'adventure' and these minisodes.

Marcus Hicks

McGann definitely deserved his own live-action series as The Doctor IMHO. His performance in the Big Finish Audio stories are excellent.

Carl Wilson

Exactly, yes! And btw I saw all the 50th anniversary stuff years before I saw the TV movie and I turned out just fine.

Carl Wilson

Might be helpful to remind Angela that this is David Tennant from Doomsday, finale of S2.

Logan de Hoyos

The reveal that John Hurt slots in between the 8th and 9th doctors, technically means Matt Smith is the 12th incarnation of the doctor, it blew my mind when this first came out. And it's very interesting he doesn't count the war doctor as an incarnation given our numbering scheme for the doctor.

Dante Sparda

My lips are sealed on the Regeneration order.

Darren Withers

I was asking for the TV movie for a long time knowing this day was comingr, but no one seemed to join in calling for it until this last week. And yes, it’s not required, but the reaction would have meant so much more if Angela had’ve seen it first.

Momo's Jokbal Fund

The Doctor is the name he chose for himself, the promise he made. The War Doctor is the one who broke the promise, as he doesn't considered himself the Doctor at that time.

Joel Chojnacki

I totally have never seen The Last Day before. Interesting!

Jason Micheal Bray

I usually recommend watching the 1996 TV movie prior to watching this just so you get a little more context on the 8th Doctor.

Xolotl (ENVTuber)

Have actually never seen this webisode! Very interesting!

Xolotl (ENVTuber)

Which begs the question if there's any other "doctors" we don't know about

George Baxter

Im pretty sure you would have to complain to Christopher Eccleston to bring him back. Over the years he's implied that RTD was the cause of his frustration, but he also refused Moffat for the 50th. It could have been the brass at the BBC he fell out with but he also refused the 60th! So 20years later he still resents them? And yet he will do audiobooks... I think ultimately Christopher holds a grudge and maybe he signed up for a version of Doctor Who that never reflected what he wanted it to be. I don't think he wants to be the leading man and has done better as a character actor

RagedConsumer

God, Paul McGann is my favourite Doctor. He's tied with David Tennant, whos at a pretty high second place.

William Huebler

The reason alot of reactors do the classic who tour is for context of the videos that give you context lol.

William Huebler

Sisterhood of Karn are in a 4th doctor episode (brain of morbius - its fun). It supposed to be a "sister" planet to Gallifrey. All immortal women who worship the flame of eternal life that produces the elixir of life for them to drink.

bakamitai

I was so happy that they brought back Paul McGann for this webisode. His only on-screen appearance to that point had been in the (very Americanized) TV movie. However, he spent so much time playing the Doctor in the audio series that when he got back in front of the camera for this minisode, his every word just oozed Last of the Time Lords. I fell in love with him all over again.

David Vandervliet

there a couple of 8th Doctor Big FInish stories that return to Karn. But Big Finish is in weird place continuity wise, and can't really be acknowlegded due to BBC mandates that they can't produce a show that requires you to purchase content, if I understand it correctly. Now there are some 8th Doctor Big Finish Audios that also ran on BBC7 when they were originally produced, so I wonder if they could have been.

LokiLoverForever99

Paul McCann was the 8th Doctor. His only appearance as the Doctor was the TV movie from 1996. Until the 50th introduced John Hurt, Paul was the Doctor before Chris. But since the 50th John has be reffered to as the 'War Doctor' and is in between Paul and Chris.

LokiLoverForever99

Why would there be another time war? What we know is that there was a time war and that the Doctor destroyed his planet and the Time Lords to end it. Why would they introduce another one when we know basically nothing about the first apart from how it ended?

LokiLoverForever99

What do you mean that not knowing what happened between 8 and 9 was part of the experience at the time? Night of the Doctor was released on the 14th November 2013. 9 days before the 50th came out. The intention was for it to be watched just before the 50th. Which is what Angela has done. So nothing has been ruined. She's in the exact same spot as we were in November 2013. Edit: And Last Day was released on the 20th. So again. Intended to be watched before the 50th.
