I think I must be one of the only people alive who actually likes this movie. It is unironically my favourite Alien film and I say that without the slightest hint of doubt. I know it’s a crazy take, y’all can come at me for it if you want 😂💀

No, it’s one of my favorites too. I genuinely love Alien3, but I understand why people dislike it when its predecessors were genre defining.

I love James Cameron’s Aliens but this film has always felt like a much truer sequel to the original in terms of tone and atmosphere.

I love this movie despite its flaws. It takes a hard turn from Aliens, but I think it links beautifully with the themes explored in the previous films: motherhood, survival, and especially how capitalism exploits and disposes of the underclass. I really appreciate this film for centering the prisoners, literally some of our most disposable people. They’re awful, rapacious dregs, but they still exhibit humanity, camaraderie, and fragility that makes them worth saving. It’s a darkly beautiful film with some of my favorite music, imagery, and acting in the trilogy. It also gave us the singularly most recognizable still image from the entire franchise, so it’s got that going for it.

This is such a great finale to Ripleys story. The misunderstanding that the Alien is CGI can be frustrating... but with all the CG nowadays is understanding. It was all done by puppetry and poor rotoscoping to add it to the film. The only CG in this movie is the chestburster scene and the dome cracking. Everything else is practical

The Assembly Cut is longer, adding deleted scenes and placing the story in chronological order - fans seem to like it best. And, if you've come this far, then Alien: Resurrection is next.

Also, this is the only Alien film I’ve seen at the theater. My dad let me watch the first two films on VHS when I was perilously young, and he took me and my brother to see Alien3 as an after dental appointment compensation. I must have been 6 or 7. He snuck us in discretely by buying tickets for TMNT3. I’m 40 now and still haven’t seen that movie.

It was a tough pill to swallow at the beginning loosing Bishop, Hicks, and Newt (not Cassy - you may be thinking of BSG) after the difficult struggle in Aliens and the bond these characters made for each other. Ripley is the story, and it had to be her versus the Alien - otherwise keeping the others around would have felt like a part two of Aliens. This is a new story, with a different feel, and while the move was dark in nature, it was beautifully done.

I didn't enjoy Alien3, it was a long ugly slog for me, and I have never (before) re-watched it. But I'm glad you've seen it, because now you can move on to "Alien Resurrection" (a.k.a. Alien4). "Alien Resurrection" was written by Joss Whedon and came out in 1997. It has some elements that showed up later in "Firefly," which came out in 2002. I'm curious what you will think of the character parallels and differences.

Just finished watching this on Youtube and found I needed to make another comment. If you watch the next one it will be your fourth favorite. I saw the theatrical cut when it came out and yep it is my 3rd fav. I think the scene where you saw the alien running down the wall looked funky because of the green screen use to put it in the scene not because it was a cgi creature. Not much of a spoiler but yes Sigourney Weaver is in it. Oh yes please for the love of god watch Predator one and two. I knew you reacted to Prey so I had assumed you had seen Predator having forgotten you said you had not.

Yes, very much a studio interference thing. David Fincher was a first-time director so frequently found himself being overruled. Plus the script went through many different iterations and wasn’t finished when they started shooting. The prisoners’ religion is carried over from an earlier iteration where it was set on a wooden space station inhabited by Luddite monks. David Fincher had no interest in going back to the film to create a director’s cut, which is why this is called an assembly cut. Someone else put it together in an effort to undo some of the studio’s changes. I’ve seen both versions and the main differences are: (1) In the theatrical cut, the alien gestates inside a dog owned by the prisoner killed by the fan, (2) They fail to trap the Alien in the waste storage facility, and much of Golic’s arc is removed; he essentially disappears from the film after the infirmary scene.

And yeaaah, I might have seen Aliens 8 times at the theater when it came out, so I might be a little biased, but I rank them Aliens --> Alien --> Alien 3.

I might have a bit of a unpopular opinion here, but you should see number 4 Alien resurrection. Although not a great alien film, it does have its moments and is a decent movie in itself. And I'll add that the original Predator movies are a must if you eventually get to the aliens vs predator movies.

With each alien movie that came out I had an expectation that it would be disappointing. I was glad to find that it wasnt the case. Though it is hard to match the thrill of one and two. You will definitely like predator. Another consideration would be I come in peace with Dolph Lundgren. Also there is the OG ufo movie Close Encounters. Not horror but good suspense. A family gathering usually includes one reference at the dinner table with pushing mashed potatoes around with a fork while saying "this means something"...
