Dry glitch? Droid glitch?

Don’t be afraid—the Doctor is always the Doctor—maybe unfamiliar—but it’s him. 😉

This might be my favorite episode from season 8. And it's a pretty neat storytelling device for helping the Doctor (and us) rediscover himself.... taking advantage of his cold detachment to achieve a normal good-Doctor-ish adventure. Maybe that detachment from his own coldness will help him open up to his thus-far-hibernating internal warmth.

Mimi

I'm sorry you're worried that you're not going to connect with this doctor. Honestly, it's ok, and if you don't, it's totally normal...everyone has doctors they love more and others maybe not so much! But I'm still confident that you will connect with him eventually, because he really does have so many of the qualities you're missing right now. He is different to the last couple of doctors, but I think in a good way, and he has my heart more than any other doctor in the show! So have faith, it will get better eventually... you just might want to strap in for the bit where it gets worse first...! 🙈

Oof…so many of the things you’re saying, and here’s me looking up and into the camera like I’m Jim from the Office………………….. This was one of my favorite episodes of the season. This season definitely has its ups and downs (it’s going to be interesting that soon, though not next week, we’re going to revisit an episode that I haven’t in many years because of it being such a down…), but this was an up. And such a happy ending! One thing about this Doctor that I think is important to realize is not just the self-hatred that 12 embodies, but also, jealousy. That line of “beat that for a date” is so important. His episode 1 line of “I’m not your boyfriend, Clara…I didn’t say it was your mistake” is such a thing with 12. And it’s not necessarily a romantic love and certainly not a lustful love, but there is such a connection there that will absolutely not go unexplored. But a lot of what 12 says and does, including these weird little insults he throws at Clara regarding her looks at times…I think there really is a deeper connection to what he is feeling there. But also, for those of you who know what I mean, I think The Doctor’s understanding of human love might very much mirror Phenomaman in the video game Dispatch. Which (as a hint to the moderator) would be a fantastic reaction for Angela to do! Her first game…because it really is a TV show just with a few simple game mechanics.

He's so Scottish

Not her first game, she did an Expanse Telltale Game

Peter's Doctor is going through everything you did at the start. He doesn't know himself.

John

If it helps, Angela, I felt much the same way you do during a lot of this season. To me, it was worth the journey.

I think here we're starting to see Moffat finally start to have a good think about what he wants Capaldi to do, I think you rightly picked up on the vibe of prior episodes trying to tap in to previous iterations of the doctor, Into the Dalek is very 9 coded, robin hood felt very 11, etc it's like 12 is trying to find out which shoes fit, and finding out none fit, then working out his own shoe size, this is a weird metaphor im sorry haha we're not there yet, but we're not at the starting line anymore if thats some reassurance, the journey isnt a straight line but we're moving a bit faster now :)

I dunno, I must have touched a worm after that episode (that doesn't sound quite right?) because I couldn't remember it! Anyhoo, I was so sorry for you at the start, but it will get better 😁. Take care of yourself, be kind and carry on.

John

All he knows right now is every time he opens himself up, he gets hurt. Only way to avoid that is to be cold and keep everyone at a distance.

This doctor has a good arc, as does Clara. No details on what that arc is, but he changes as time goes on; he won't always be this type of Doctor. Also, I love hearing all of your theories, especially with me knowing which are right and which are wrong. You are right more often than I was at the time, and I am fairly good at recognizing tropes early on. I'm sorry that you broke down at the beginning. That had to be a record for the earliest crying on a Doctor Who episode (I haven't watched every watch through you do, so no claims there) at approx. 1m30s into the pre-show talk. There will be good doctors and bad, good stories and bad (as long as we define bad as not as good as we have become accustomed to). Just be ready for the rollercoaster to continue.

Personally, I think if you pay attention to Peter's face (in particular when Saibra is about to die), you can see that 12 is *very* affected by stuff in the episodes. There are people that care *too much* that they have to bring the Fortress walls UP in order to function and push through. I honestly relate more to that in my youth. Doesn't excuse his actions, but I do think it explains how someone who is (at their core) a empathetic person can be unapproachable. Also, the Doctor is an alien, and so they might be just a little less understanding of human feelings more than his other incarnations. I think S8 Doctor is there, at that point. I think he is afraid to lose, and so he pushes people away, even Clara. He wants to prevent the heartbreak of a loss, and so he seeks to sabotage his own relationships in order to "spare" him and her the pain of 1) his sudden regeneration and 2) his complex feelings for her. Even if the Doctor doesn't want to encourage a romantic relationship, those feels are still there (in some form), and so he's very much trying to cage himself by rudeness. At least that's what I've gathered from going on this journey with you.

Nicholas Sulikowski

To borrow an expression from the Ninth Doctor from "The Doctor Dances": "Just this once, Clara. Everybody lives!....Well except for those whose brains became soup. But they are still technically alive. So, mostly a success? /Twelfth Doctor, probably Joking aside, this was a fun one as it started off feeling a little dark, but then like an Eleventh Doctor episode, it flipped all that on its head in the eleventh hour (pun intended) and we got a really happy ending. And even with moments of Twelve feeling cold, I still got a sense that he does care. He's just simply someone that is guarded because ultimately the goal is for him and everyone around him to survive as best as he can manage. I also appreciated a lot of the levity from Twelve throughout this one. Be they actual jokes or quips, or just funny accidental lines like "Okay, that probably should be question one." It kept things happily light.

In regards to The Doctor's displayed lack of empathy / understanding, think it's worth noting that in addition to 800 years of warfare on Trenzalore, he also spent all that time without a Companion. And you may always be able to ride a bike once you learn, but if you don't do it for 80 years or so, when you hop on one again it'll take you a few tries before it comes back to you and you're doing it smoothly. I quite like this entire season, but I remember during the first airing there were plenty of folks who weren't enjoying it who would come to enjoy it more on future rewatches, because it's easier to enjoy a roller coaster if you've ridden it before and know it doesn't end up crashing into a wall.

"How do you clear your mind" is the question centuries of meditation tradition have tried to answer.

Mimi

Best metaphors ever!! 😂

Dang, it sucks to hear that you're not vibing with the season yet. For me it's a creative high point of the show, where Moffat refuses to rest on his laurels or take the show's age & success for granted, so he really explores and interrogates the character and his own storytelling habits

Paul Patine

I liked all of this episode, but my favorite scene almost looks ad-libbed: the Leaning Tower of Pisa joke delivered by the Doctor, reacted to by the rest, while they were standing around in the Tardis eating Chinese takeout. It looked like they were just filming the cast between takes and Capaldi told a joke. Or it was scripted and Capaldi surprised them with his delivery. Or they were all just good actors. Loved that short little scene.

Martin

He does feel everything he just hides it differently, 10 and 11 hid it with a smile and then you'd see the pain and anger whereas 12 doesn't hide it with a smile anymore, 'who frowned me this face'. The doctor is affected by all of it he's just hiding it behind a more stern face this go around. It's not better or worse, it's that comparison, as the saying goes, which is the thief of joy, it's just a different way than what you're used to that's all, not better or worse, just different.

Joe Cleveland

That Doctor looking at you from the blanket, the Sixth Doctor, is played by Colin Baker (no relation to Tom). This season is a roller coaster to this point. This one and the Robin Hood one are so fun, and there's a lot of fun in Deep Breath, too. But in other places, it kinda feels like the writer is trying really hard to be edgy but just ends up being rude.

Jef Hughes

Capaldi is more reminiscent of the classic Doctors than any of Eccleston, Tennant and Snith were. The Doctor was never the romantic hero you are used to. It was the Doctors 2005-2013 which changed and broke away from who the character is. For long-time fans, Capaldi brought back the ‘real’ Doctor.

Dylan Humphries

I have to admit that I've skipped a few Who episodes, partly because I think there's a lull to the start of the season and partly because Angela's mounting distress has been a little challenging. But this is where I feel like the season really finds it's stride and kicks into one of Who's really good stretches, and I'm glad to see that the general mood (on screen and in comments) seems to be on the upswing too!

Jack Mingle

part of me always felt it was intentional whiplash given to the audience, I like to think Moffat is that genius.
