oh i’m so glad you’re warming up to him! his smiles being so rare makes them all the more impactful ❤️

Frederik Jensen

Have you already filmed next weeks episode?

Josef Schiltz

The Twelfth Doctor's chimes have reached six. He'll get to twelve eventually.

Kate

This episode is so necessary, Clara's getting a little too comfy with the risk taking and thinking she can balance both worlds and keep them compartmentalized but she needs Danny to give her some perspective

MaxValPlatt

I wouldn't put all guards about 12th down yet. He is still a work in progress and very short tempered, which will be quite important very soon, so, be wary of emotional backlash when some of next episodes might show him being emotionally regressed to his original state of character.

Van Evans

My US history teacher was also the football coach... we mostly watched movies. I have a cynical theory that most people don't have a good grasp of history because the football coach was their history teacher 😅

Jeff Ratcliff

I didn't like the disrespect for Danny, particularly calling him a PE teacher. I know it's not the intent, but when you consider that the character is Black, it feels like racial stereotyping. This is my primary reason for not liking this season so much, at least to this point in it.

Josef Schiltz

In the UK, our school's physics teacher doubled as a rugby coach. He said that running into me was like "running into a brick wall!" I suspect that, being a physics teacher, he would know what that felt like. Maybe he wasn't that good at physics?

The Lore Merchant

They got out of the problem at the start in an unrevealed manner... her being tanned when she saw Danny was because they had been out in the sun for so long.

glenn sawyer

This episode sets the scene for the rest of the season with the caretaker. I thought you would like this episode. It definitely gets better from here.

John the Rambling Scriblerian

The PE teacher label is, we learn here, a broad label that reveals the Doctor's bias towards soldiers (especially considering his experiences on Earth, yes, but with his own people and, indeed, himself). But I always thought how absolutely hard Danny's label for the Doctor - an Officer - hits the mark. For me, it's akin to the time a Dalek described him as "being a good Dalek". An absolute gut punch. The dynamic that is shaping up in this episode, I absolutely am here for. I cannot wait to see how this develops over the rest of the season! (a reminder, I've never watched beyond Matt Smith, aside from random out of context clips).

stcyl

SO glad to see you starting to understand this Doctor. Just remember, he is a work in progress.

Jeff Ratcliff

I hope you're watching the full-length versions, but if you're not, you'll be missing some things.

John the Rambling Scriblerian

I've been watching the full length stand alone episodes first (generally the night before), and then I watch the edited version here on Patreon. I love comparing my thoughts with what Angela comes up with; I think she has a greater handle on things, as I often tend to focus on more mundane, world building aspects. But in this series... the psychological dynamic has been Outstanding

Matt Crumpton

I'm glad you enjoyed this episode and are warning up to 12. It's been stated before here, he is still a work in progress. Don't be surprised if your see some regression and you back to feeling towards him like your did earlier in the season. This season is an up and down rollercoaster with him. BUT, you are starting to see the qualities you see in the Doctor. Keep with it. You will see them more and more, believe us.You will enjoy him more in his other seasons.

Darth Muppet

I know you really want the warmth and compassion back. So much I want to say… Just… keep watching.

funnylilgalreacts

Yeah, but then the next episode happens and I’m right back to where I started

funnylilgalreacts

I just hate when they show them in peril and then don’t show a resolution

funnylilgalreacts

I have. But please don’t speak about it until it’s released next week.

funnylilgalreacts

I don’t remember if he was a good teacher or not, but I do distinctly remember him giving us sections of “we didn’t start the fire” and doing a report on that era. Which I thought was a really cool way of teaching history.

funnylilgalreacts

Yeah, I don’t know if it’s the American in me but a snooty European looking down on somebody’s profession definitely triggered me 😅

MaxValPlatt

So....watched 8x7, eh? :B

Clare W

i’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

MaxValPlatt

I think that this is also because, from Doylist point of view, his character is a team effort and most of episodes were made by different people - so, different writers put different nuances in Doctor's character which might make him more or less sympathetic. And next story, from different writer could make him slightly different again. I actually think that Sherwood story was kinda non-specific in a way that I could easily imagine any other Doctor in that story doing more or less the same things, so, it wasn't really based on current interpretation of 12th character. And Caretaker was written by Gareth Roberts and I can pretty much see the same quirkiness in most of Doctor's scenes as he had in Lodger and Closing time (both episodes with James Corden from the same writer) and then Moffat probably edited banters with Danny into the story (they look slightly out of place, IMHO).

Michael

The Doctor assuming it was the other teacher because he resembled Eleven 🤣 bow tie, floppy hair not sure if you caught that!

Frederik Jensen

No worries. Hope you have a great day. Or night maybe.. Timezones are hard.

Jack Witt

The thing about Clara is that she is the companion who is most like the Doctor and what is Rule #1 when it comes to the Doctor?

stephen Hopkinson

in perspective the reason why the doctor hate soldiers because he was a soldier him self

Fred Aczon

Capaldi's comedic timing really gets to shine here. I love how easily the Doctor projects his "good" qualities to Adrian while simultaneously projecting the war aspects of himself, which he loathes, unto Danny (unjustly). Twelve is so flawed I love it.

William Wood

The Doctor’s disdain for soldiers has a lot to do with past experiences, especially in classic who , when they would solve issues by killing the thing rather than use a peaceful means of resolving it. Some Doctor’s seem to have more of a pronounced disdain than other Doctor’s. It can be frustrating.

James Hoffmann

Yeah, Clara lying to Danny is frustrating. It is one of those tired tropes we see in shows to add drama. I hate it. I do think the animosity between Danny and the Doctor makes sense. I feel like both Danny and The Doctor are suffering from war trauma. Danny calls The Doctor "officer" because he sees in him the same type of military officer that pushed him too far in the military. The Doctor has seen way too much violence and death in the Time War. And he sees in Danny the typical "soldier" that too often shoots first and asks questions later which the Doctor hates. Which is why when Danny says to evacuate the school and call in the military, that was the wrong thing to say to the Doctor who prefers a non-violent plan to solving the threat. I will say that I am very curious how Angela reacts to the next episode because there is a very controversial decision in it. However, it does have a fantastic scene between Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi where they act their hearts out.

Brian Syrett

I'll admit, I'm someone who loved 12 from the word "kidneys!" The tonal shift of not just the show, but of a character we've grown to love over the course of several seasons, feels like watching the progression we didn't get to see leading up to Eccleston's 9th Doctor. He's weary, tired and jaded, having lived through 900 years of conflict on Trenzalore. That is recent to him, and that trauma is important - a theme for this season that I don't think gets talked about directly enough. But regardless, seeing your reactions to Capaldi's Doctor through the eyes of something far more substantive than "he's old!" is enrapturing. The conflict you have, while not something I experienced, I feel actually adds more to the show for me as a viewer, getting to understand that perspective. And while it's difficult to see you struggle with those feelings of abandonment, I fully hope and believe that you will come around and join us 12 lovers - if not as your favorite Doctor - then at least as a Doctor that deserves the mantle.

chris

The 12th Doctor is the first Doctor to start there incarnation and knowing he did not destroy Gallifrey, he then spent 900 years as a soldier defending Trenzalore, he has lost himself, that’s one hell of a whiplash to live with the guilt of a genocide you did not commit to only discover you did partake in a 900 year world afterwards, how many trenzalore civilians died because of that? We don’t know but must’ve been many. The good thing is 12s story is a character assessment, you have had three wonderful Doctors, when 11 said “he needs you” to Clara about 12 he wasn’t wrong, he is lost and we are on the story to The Doctor finding themselves again, he hasn’t grounded yet but boy when you look at him now and where he will be at the end of his incarnation your gonna love the road it took he is wonderful
