Love this movie! And in this rewatch, I JUST caught that Jerome told Vincent to call him 'Eugene', after his middle name. Eugene, as in 'You-Gene'.

The name Eugene also means “good origins”

You didn't notice the bolded letters in the opening credits, and then the different colored letters in the end credits. It's the same letters that make up the name Gattaca. It's also the 4 letters that represent the nucleotides that make up DNA.

Great film, and you're not the only reactor I've seen who has had it as a perpetual poll option that never wins. It's always a dedicated group who want it, though. It's always frustrating when it loses votes to much weaker films just because so many people have never seen it.

Thanks for reacting to "Gattaca" I first watched "Gattaca" in 2006 after ordering the DVD, which was later replaced with a Blu-ray, then a 4K disc. I kept reading the title mentioned online from various sources and after looking over the cast list, I couldn't hold out any longer and ordered the movie on disc. I think it was the weird title of the movie that kept me from watching it sooner than I did. I think that science fiction in "Gattaca" is a mere backdrop to a story about perseverance, conviction, and belief in one's self. Maybe a person can strive to be more than the what others have predicted. "Forrest Gump", anyone? Even though she is listed in the end credits, I always forget to look for Maya Rudolph in the movie. Many of us have seen Xander Berkeley's work as 'Todd', John Connor's stepdad, in "Terminator 2 Judgment Day", or in AMC's "The Walking Dead". Looking back further, Xander played one of the sleazy nightclub owners taking advantage of Jeff and Beau Bridges' characters in "The Fabulous Baker Boys" (1989) - an excellent comedy! Elias Koteas DOES resemble actor Christopher Meloni from "Law & Order", though it never occurred to me until you mentioned it. I liked Elias' work in two of David Fincher's films, "Zodiac" (2007) and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (2008).

One of my favorite films. Andrew Niccol's directorial debut. His work is always deeply sympathetic. He also wrote The Truman Show (1998) and Stephen Spielberg's The Terminal (2004) starring Tom Hanks, and wrote+directed Lord of War (2005) which is some of star Nicolas Cage's best work. Ethan Hawke also appears in Lord of War, and stars in Niccol's Good Kill (2014). After watching the film, check out its original theatrical trailer, which strikes a very different, more conventional tone. DNA evidence was in the zeitgeist after the OJ Simpson trial in the summer of 1995; the Human Genome Project had started in 1990 and DNA-related studies were popular in science news; the first successful cloning of a mammal, a sheep named Dolly, occurred in 1996. (The TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation came later in 2000.) As for why the tone of the trailer is so different from the film despite the trailer being an ostensibly-accurate summary of the plot, consider the film's score, both its string-heavy melodies and lack of percussion. Where there could be fearful tension it chooses hope or melancholy -- or silence. Two favorite musical moments: horns break through briefly at dawn (1h03m), and again when hiding/being revealed (1h12m) and immediately after. A small thing our host seemed to have missed: the lead (younger) detective was swimming in a lap pool when called by the junior (older) detective with a new lead, so he has kept in shape -- perhaps trying to convince himself of something. (1h04m) Also, the company doctor's words near the end about his son's inspiration... gets me every time.

Gattaca was made before the Human Genome Project was completed and ironically (because of ethical and legal concerns) no-one really know's what to do with the result. Although since we can barely fix the most lethal broken gene pair's attempting to make an ubermensch is not really on the horizon.

So many details in this movie. The staircase in Jerome's home is a helix shape, which he has to climb when Anton comes to visit - I'm not sure about the meaning of this, since Jerome 'technically' has a 'perfect genome', but I guess it can be seen as an image of him being stronger than his disability, which makes his internal struggles even more sad.

I'm so happy you watched this movie! I approve of more executive decisions!

I just love this movie to bits; have since I saw it in theaters way back in high school. One of those movies where I was one of like seven to twelve people in the theater; it never got the attention it deserved. It is indeed visually beautiful, some amazing cinematography and visuals, and the retro-futuristic aesthetic makes it nicely timeless. I love the score as well, it's the first movie I went out and bought the score album for. The story, the themes, the emotions, the deeper philosophical questions inspired by the setting; it really is everything Science Fiction should be at its best. Also, I'm a fan the wordplay - "in-valid" / "invalid", "deGenerate" / "degenerate", the "Hoovers" literally vacuuming up genetic material from crime scenes. As one of the cats who always voted for this every time it was in a poll, absolutely delighted by this executive decision. Fantastic reaction.
