Gonna comment before watching to say i love this episode. Gonna come back after the watch to see what you think too.

Regarding the prologue: The Doctor must have forgotten a lot at the beginning of his new regeneration cycle. For example, who he had become—who he was. After regenerating, he asked Clara if she knew how to fly the TARDIS. He also seems much more like he did before his first regeneration. The question is, how much does he know about who he was and who he is? Just the fact that he let Rose or Donna get close to him back then changed him significantly, if you remember. I guess that task now falls to Clara. And always keep this question in mind: “Why this face?” Just saying. Always keep your flag flying in the wind, as we say here in Germany.😉

Doctor gave the other professor a jelly baby, a call back to a previous doctor.

Nathaniel Castle

Legally the drinking age in england is 18, the reality tends to be around 12!

Rach

I love your analysis! I actually find Clara's relationship with the Doctor and Danny being a bit toxic is really interesting, compared to other companions it's nice to have a change of pace and explore someone who is still good, but fundamentally probably shouldn't be with The Doctor. It's Danny I feel sorry for! He never once said she should stop, he just wanted honesty, and I think it's reasonable in a relationship to at least want to know if your partner is involving themselves in mortal peril!

Nathan Jasper

I don't know that it's hypocrisy as much as it is realization. Amending your ways is part of change otherwise everyone would stay the exact same. Amy chose Rory, yes, but they both also started traveling with the Doctor. Rory was all the time putting himself in harm's way because he knew Amy didn't want to stop. It's still a slightly different situation than Clara and Danny, sure, but Amy and Rose both certainly had that level of addiction that Clara has. Rose abandoned Mickey/Ricky repeatedly to the point that he'd rather stay in an alternate universe. Which, Mickey's clinginess and refusal to move on is another issue entirely. But anyway, the point is, every companion has lied to people they loved for the Doctor and almost every companion has gotten that addiction high and sacrificed pieces of themselves to keep going. The only one to truly walk away was Martha, and even she joined UNIT to help on the ground level. If Donna hadn't been forced to stop, she absolutely would have kept going. She even said "I was gonna be with you forever" right before the mind wipe. Clara's lying to Danny is inexcusable, absolutely, but she's also hardly the first to lie and make excuses to stay a little bit longer.

I think Clara in this season is so different to all the other nuwho companions because by this point she is there to have fun- the doctor is her hobby. But the others have always given up their "earth life" to be with the doctor and I feel like that is where the clash between the characters is coming - Clara wants fun, the Doctor wants someone who will push the button with him when he has to blow up Pompeii, and I think this is the first time in a long time that the Doctor isn't getting that and I think he's starting to feel the weight alone

The most destructive lies are not the ones we tell others. It is the ones we tell ourselves.

Twelve is beginning to take form in this latest regeneration. It takes a moment for a 2000 year old Time Lord to reconstitute. The Doctor will be arriving soon.

Luka Poser

Finally the episode where Twelve comes fully into view. He maybe doesn't even like being The Doctor anymore, certainly he hates the difficult decisions he has to make. But he keeps putting himself into situations where he has to make hard decisions. Maybe because he enjoys the thrill, or maybe because he truly doesn't know how to stop. And I think Clara truly SEES him for the first time. That "I love you" said ostensibly to Danny but while she's looking at the Doctor... insane TV, frankly!

Ok first I have to address a comment at the beginning that you said and I’m paraphrasing if you have the powers or the knowledge help or get off our planet, so he can’t just live here like a normal person it almost feel like the situation that Metroman finds himself in Megamind, he is tired of doing the job thats why in the last episode he wanted the humans to make the decision he can’t be Superman all the time and be funny and silly and kindhearted is exhausting,I really feel bad for this doctor because everyone wants him to be like 10 and 11 but he is not he is tired, he is cranky and he is a being that feels emotions too but everyone wants him to be happy and saved the day with a smile and that is not the case everyone dies at some point thats how it works, he can’t saved everyone, also brings me to another point Courtney it’s not special she needs to make herself special by learning, caring like she care when she was plying saving the creature by traveling and many other things she was not special at that moment because she was wasting her life doing stupid stuff. Anyway I’m sorry I got a little heated I didn’t like that comment about you have the powers help or get off our planet i guess I’m sensitive about it being an immigrant and being called and illegal alien that kinda touch a nerve so I’m sorry if I come across as angry and so if this offended you or made you feel uncomfortable and that is too long.

Merlin’s Cat

Don’t forget Perkins also survived so I think it’s entirely possible he saved everyone. A note about Perkins (that you may not know) Frank Skinner (who played him) is a well known British comedian and a massive Doctor who fan, when he said no thank you to travelling with the Doctor it must have been a hard line for the actor to say. I really like this episode and I see it as a turning point.

Jamiee

I do think I find 12's Clara a little bit more interesting to watch, I think I found Impossible Girl Clara just a bit too MPDG whereas here she has a little more depth, flaws, sure, but I think if everyone was perfect and there was no conflict, then it wouldn't make for very interesting watching, that said, it's not just 12 who has character growth and an arc, but also the companion is on their own personal journey as well

Mimi

The situation last week in Kill the Moon was a completely different one to the the times when the doctor normally helps out. There was no one invading the planet or killing people - it was just a decision that needed to be made which may or may not have had an impact on the earth. It was a turning point for humanity, and as such that really wasn't the doctor's call to make. He was obviously completely wrong though in the way he actually went about it! In this week's episode, by contrast, there were people actually being killed, so he was trying to save them. I don't think there's any inconsistency or hypocrisy in that as they were very different circumstances! Also, yes, the doctor saved everyone, he was just making a joke, lol! Perkins is on the Tardis afterwards, and there's a deleted scene on the beach with Maisie as well.

Ben

It's made pretty clear that the Doctor did save everyone on the train. I know you don't fully trust 12 yet but come on it was obvious that was what happened.

Daniel King

Not Sure how far along you are in watching episodes, or if you watch them week by week. but keep any eye out for the opening credits of episode 12

Nathan Sill

The way Peter looks at her at the end when she decides to stay is beautiful, I feel it gets overshadowed somewhat by Clara and her lying to danny. But on a rewatch u see the doctor in that moment and how happy he is, it's not just the smile it's the way Peter's eyes are he looks at her with such affection. That's why he's my doctor and I can't wait (no spoilers) for you to get deeper into his story and arc.

Alkaris

UK laws on drinking is 18 years, 16 under Adult Supervision. You're allowed to drive, gamble and smoke at 16, but you can't alcohol. Some have attempted to push the drinking age to 21 or 25 with proof of ID, which stores are legally required to ask ID to those who look under 21.

Clare W

and the ending credits as well!

Daniel King

oh yes! forgot that was on the end, a must watch

vaughn DeGeer

Doctor gave him a jelly baby a sweet most eaten by the 4th doctor, kind of like Turkish delight in texture

John

To avoid spoilers all I'll say is you're noticing the things you should notice and you're bothered by the things that should bother you.

Ben

Clara (even at this point) is what Rose would have become had she carried on travelling with the doctor in doomsday.

Igor McKay

I love the way Clara says “I love you” to Danny while looking at the Doctor. For me, it adds another layer to her choices: life would be so much simpler if we fell for the right people.

Ash Davis

Jamie Mathieson is my favorite non-showrunner writer for the show. His episodes are always the highlight of their respective seasons! So looking forward to next week’s episode as well, for the same reason! He’s able to throw out so much expositional dialogue without ever sacrificing stakes or pacing! His scripts are so dense with plot details and character motivations, you have to rewatch his episodes over and over to catch everything! This is easily the most rewatchable episode in the entirety of Series 8

Ejigantor

So, last week's episode is one I hadn't re-watched for a while, and after last week it's been percolating, and I've come to think that The Doctor took them to that moment explicitly to change the outcome; that in the original timeline the bombs were set off and the creature died. The scene on the beach at the end, when he closes his eyes and describes the future of humanity, he was observing the new timeline. That would also explain to some extent his removing himself from the situation, especially if he'd been there before in some other capacity. Doesn't explain or justify all the rest of his behavior though.

Ejigantor

We saw the TARDIS phone call from GUS; it was at the end of an episode with 11, Amy, and Rory. I think this is a fantastic episode. Love the "Are you my mummy?" callback. And of course he saved everyone; Perkins wouldn't have been nearly so chummy if he and Clara were the only ones The Doctor rescued. He just stayed behind to check out the TARDIS while the others went to the city.

Darth Muppet

I know I sound like a broken record by constantly saying this, but just hang in there. There is a reason for why things are the way they are right now. Twelve has my favorite character arc in the entire history of the show.

Carl Wilson

Good to see your reaction here. Personally I feel like Capaldi's really good era (and Clara's best) doesn't start till next season, and this season is really flawed. But they are at least beginning to turn things around a bit in this episode, giving him more nuance and Clara a lot more agency (for better and worse).

Carl Wilson

I'm a thousand percent sure he saved everybody. (And that's not based on anything outside this episode.) If he hadn't I don't think he remotely would have joked about it being his "cover story."

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

Ang…everything you’re feeling about Clara right now, is what a lot of people felt about her in real time. And I get it…honestly, I do. But to be honest…this is also why Clara is my favorite. I don’t love her because of her time as the Impossible Girl…I love her because she is so imperfect, and she’s struggling with making the right decisions, and she is doing bad things. I can relate to that…I have people in my life like that. And yeah, her relationship with the Doctor is toxic in some ways. But that is what keeps me interested so much. I often rewatch Series 9 more than Series 8…but I seriously had forgotten just how important this episode is. I remembered that this was where Clara rediscovered her love for the journey (if not necessarily the Doctor), and the lies began again and all that. But for those of us who know what is to come…damn, the foreshadowing. Like, so so much of it. I do love that this story is very much a 2-parter with Kill the Moon, even if it’s not numbered the way other episodes often are. And the 2-part stories are often my favorite kind. I also had to go check to see if the voice actor for Gus also did the Mr. Handy in the Fallout Series. He didn’t, but damn, everything about Gus sure reminds me of those Fallout droids.

Eaten by the 4th Doctor... and more!

DSJ.

Fellow addicts ;(

DSJ.

Strangely enough, all this Doctor thinks about is feelings

DSJ.

This is the Doctor with an absolutely equal Companion.

Literaltruth

Felt really sad about your feelings at the start of the episode. To say this without getting spoliery - there's a thing in this season where there's two arcs. The obvious arc is what you've been seeing with Missy in the Afterlife. The less obvious arc is that this season is all about the Doctor finding his way back to the thing you feel like you're missing. So hang in there - he's learning to be the Doctor again and although he'll never be quite a whimsical as Matt Smith, by next season he'll DEFINTELY be the Doctor in the way that you want him to be.

Captain Painway

I know this is older, and you might not see this Angela, but I felt compelled to post. I was in the US Army for 15 years, was in Iraq in 2003 for the invasion and aftermath. I have a 100% VA disability pension (as does my husband). Military members and veterans are no more good than any other average person. Back in the 2010s, before I got out, there was a survey published that showed around 90% of service members and veterans cited some sort of financial cause as being their primary or only motivation for joining. Only around 5% cited patriotism or service as their primary or only reason. We overly worship our military and vets in this country. I served with far too many selfish, cruel, incompetent (this one included me in some areas), apathetic, and/or violent people to believe that vets deserve respect just for being vets. I empathize with the doctor's view on soldiers far more than most, I'd say. As for the Doctor and Clara's relationship and how each of them is acting, I will repeat what John said three weeks ago: "...you're noticing the things you should notice and you're bothered by the things that (are meant to) bother you."

Hi Angela, Im new here. When the Doctor pulled out the cigarette case it was filled with Jelly Babies (candy) which is a big pull from Classic. Several Doctors (esp the Fourth's Tom Baker) used to offer strangers, aliens, villains, etc. "Have a Jelly Baby?" from a small paper bag as a friendly gesture or a distraction. I think this is the first time we saw them in a silver cigarette case. Offering someone a cigarette from a silver case is a very Noir/Orient Express kind of gesture and switching the cigarettes to candy is a joke.

Mark Ten

I saw the Doctor's refusing to make a choice as a very Time Lord thing to do. The Time Lords first law was non-interference and although the Doctor constantly interferes, there are still some lines he just cant cross. This was one but he handled it very badly. Peter's Time Lord is more an alien/outsider than the previous New Who Doctors and shows his lack of understanding of humans in this way.

David Hammer

I think this is when a lot of people began disliking Clara as a companion, or at least felt conflicted about her, so you're definitely not alone in that. I'd say she's probably the most polarizing companion of the Modern Who era - people either love her or hate her, and many think she outstayed her welcome on the show. But her behavior is understandable when you look at her as an addict, and I think to an extent the Doctor is addicted to her as well, or at least addicted to having someone there to whom he can show off. It's interesting that this is when he finds someone else to ask to travel with him in Perkins, knowing that Clara may not be with him much longer, and that Perkins refuses. I think the Doctor is taken aback by that refusal more than we see, and is why he's willing to allow Clara to lie to him (because there's no way he doesn't know she lying). He just wants her to keep travelling with him no matter what. It's clear at this point, in any event, that Clara is going through a transitional character-development arc just as much as the Doctor.
