yeahhhh love this episode! So glad we're back!

OverWims

First video I'll be watching when released took a while to catch up...

Luka Poser

As much as Clara's lying and the double life is painful to watch, I think it's so, so important to understanding her. In series 7, when she was still The Impossible Girl, a question in that mystery was why she was kind of a Perfect companion. Then it turned out there's nothing bigger that made her special, so she just is really good at playing a hero, complete with a skill for looking after kids. So, this season asks the question: "what kind of a normal person could be an impossibly amazing children's hero?" to which the answer is "someone deeply fucked-up who is good at putting up facades". That of course also applies to the Doctor, who adopted his name as a self-actualising promise while deep down being a scared little boy. Finally, the two get to overlap in this episode, which begs another question: “how much can Clara help this Doctor if he is inadvertently bringing out her bad side?” Clara is my favourite companion precisely because she is difficult to like. She is allowed to be just as complicated and selfish as the Doctor has always been, without the safety blanket of being an alien man with their name in the title of the show. The last time we had someone this messy who wanted both lives at once was Rose, but Clara pushes it further in uncomfortable and interesting ways.

Ben

Hopefully things should be a lot smoother for you with 12 from here on out!

Lycanlux

My favourite of S8 such a good episode and there's the first glimpse into Capaldi's speech ability with his final monologue to The Boneless. The Mummy on the Orient Express and Flatline being back to back good episodes really helps S8 I will admit as much as I love Capaldi as my fav doctor S8 is quite rough but here we really swing into gear, Glad your enjoying it!.

Luka Poser

You're so right about the Doctor, it's great seeing him be a passenger who gets to react to his own actions from an outside perspective.

Nathan Jasper

You're never disappointing, and you absolutely are good! Doctor Who's a climb and every climb has a few loose rocks along the way.

Gallows Girl Amy

I love that this episode was set in Bristol. It has a well established relationship with street art. Not just for the amazing Graffiti but more famously as the home town of Banksy. Sadly they didn't show much of it though. I'm not from there but I have friends down that way. If you want to visit the UK outside of London I heartily recommend it. It's also a cracking episode which really develops Clara and Twelve's characters and their relationship. Peter's inconsistent hair is down to his Tardis scenes being shot as part of an earlier block. This episode was then largely shot as a "Doctor Lite" episode with Peter only needed for one day of filming.

TGrimace

The two interactions that meant the most to me: Doctor: You were an exceptional Doctor. Goodness had nothing to do with it. and Clara: Isn't that how you think? Doctor: Mostly so other people don't have to. I think those statements by the Doctor really help to bring his thinking/mindset info focus.

Merlin’s Cat

I really like this episode. The doctor really is starting to soften from his earlier grumpiness. Also Jovian Wade as Rigsy was a great edition.

Lintrinsic

Yay, you got your Doctor moment! Don't worry, you didn't fall anyone, its all part and parcel of the Whovian experience as we all tried to explain. I've always had mixed feelings about this episode. It's got everything I love in an episode, the right mix of horror and comedy, Rigsy is fantastic... But it also encapsulates everything I came to dislike about Clara and by this point she was really grating on my nerves. The lies, the arrogance, to quote another franchise the sheer f-ing hubris, the craving effusive praise on top of the validation she already got.

Cei Stockport

Danny really mashed the Doctor's beserk button by calling him an officer. He WAS basically an officer during both the Time War and the Siege of Trenzalore and in both cases leading or even ordering people into battle KNOWING that some would die. Which couldn't be more against the Doctors principles than anything.

Don Dino Spezzini

I still get chills from his you are monsters and I’m the man that stops the monsters monologue, while straightening his coat. Also, one of my most used Gifs him doing the little dance and smiling.

OfficiallyGames

Calling someone "Love" in the UK isn't the man being flirty / sexist / cat calling / romantic etc. It's just a common, polite, friendly term like "mate", "dear", "hon". It's used a lot, even in customer service like "Here you go, Love". Just UK Culture nothing bad.

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

This is one of the most underrated Doctor Who episodes. I think this episode is where we get the duality of Clara, of her really deciding who she wants to be. Riggsy and his legal trouble. :(

Mimi

You really haven't failed anyone! It's your journey with the show, and how you feel along that journey is absolutely valid! That said, I'm so happy to see that you're seeing a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, and I really hope that you eventually feel that you've got your friend back, because missing the Doctor is really tough!!

Rach

Yep that's a genuine continuity error! He has about 3 hair lengths in this episode lmao. I definitely prefer it longer

OfficiallyGames

Poor George, being killed then Angela cursing him out due to mistaken identity lol

Ben

I mean, it kind of depends on who you're saying it to, some people won't mind it but others really will.

OfficiallyGames

Never met or heard of someone taking issue with it apart from americans taking it too literally. I am from the north though so I think it might also depend on region.

Jason Jeffery

Yes, due there were time constraints in scheduling and filming which is a good spot on his hair.

Jason Jeffery

Also, there is no need to apologies for this season with the Doctor. The people who Like Capaldi the best understand your feelings. With Matt Smith, she was the Impossible girl but it just seems like a lost connection between clara and the doctor this season. Personally i put this down to Danny but regardless, we fans know whats to come so we understand the current frustration you have with his version of the doctor yet have no issue with it.

Jamiee

One thing I love about this episode, is so far leading up to this moment, a question thats been asked "what is going on in the doctors mind", the enigmatic nature of his thoughts and feelings are able to be shown a little bit here in a way that fits the story and isnt just "and then he was open and vulnerable", and his monologue and "i am the doctor" moment sorta solidifies his footing and is less shaky with idenity and I think this episode shows that arc start to come to a close, not fully but we're in the endgame of the "am I a good man" question With the lying, I think the doctor is less hurt by the lies itself, but confused as to why she feels the need to, she could very easily say to him "just dont tell danny" kinda vibes and he'd be, okay-ish with it, thats not new ground and companion double lives is basically a given for every past companion. As for the "PE" and "soldier boy", I dont feel like these are maliciouus comments or remarks, just a light nickname/jab, as opposed to the caretaker era where he actively disliked the guy Out of canon talk, I think Moffat is finally understanding how to write for capaldi, it felt like the first half of this season he was just throwing different moods and vibes at the wall and seeing what sticks, but I think we're at a point where he's cracked the code and we can actually get on with some storytelling rather than just testing waters. As for the "love" comment, that's an incredibly common nickname for someone you don't know, especially if theres an age difference, and even more especially so in certain places of the uk that are a bit more rural

MaxValPlatt

I think that Jamie Mathieson was a nice choice for this stretch of episodes - he wrote both "Mummy" and this one, so, putting them consequentially finally gives Doctor a stable characterization (with slight progression likability-wise). And you liked both of these )

Jack Mingle

He was community payback, wouldn't lose sleep over him Just kidding (really though that was funny i almost spat my tea all over myself.)

Jack Mingle

Gotta love Local knowledge

Retro Tom

I can only speak for me, there has been nothing to be disappointed with. You've had a honest opinion & reaction, whether one agrees or disagrees. In fact it's reason to be more proud that you weren't faking liking the 12th Doctor earlier on just out fear of alienating fans. Regardless of how you feel it has been & continues to be a joy to watch your reactions because of your real passion. That to me is what makes a true fan, not just blindly praising everything because you feel you have to be caring enough to voice the opinion "this isn't working for this time" It doesn't mean there hasn't been or won't be good stuff in the past or future. You're doing great with nothing to apologize for. Keep up the good work!

Jack Mingle

I felt bad for Rigsy, he tries to show Clara his really cool art in the tunnel and she just say "Oh nice" and blows right past it.

Jack Mingle

The Doctor getting a chance to see how he appears from the outside is really giving him a whole new perspective on his own actions. Really good episode and Local Knowledge is a great tertiary Companion.

Nicholas Sulikowski

I'll admit, prior to this re-watch, a good deal of series 8 was kind of a blur to me. Largely because I too was having difficulty adjusting to this grumpier Doctor. Now I'm enjoying it a lot more the second time around, but previously most episodes I could barely remember them. Except "Flatline". I adored this episode when it originally aired and always remembered it. Not only was it well written and creepy, but it leaned a little into, for lack of a better term, hard sci-fi. Like I just adored how although we eventually assume the Boneless are malevolent, we don't actually know for sure, nor do we ever learn their endgame. It's a little bit like the entity from "Midnight", but moreso sci-fi curiosity mixed with some horror than just straight horror. I just loving musing over what a two-dimensional world and two-dimensional life forms would be like, and how bizarre communication with them would be. This wasn't just a creepy episode, but a thought stimulating one as well. (Though I will say the 3D Boneless were pure nightmare fuel. I yelped a little out loud during this rewatch when they first appeared, despite having seen this episode a few times.) Oh and don't worry about not getting Twelve at first. Not every Doctor is for everyone. But I am glad that you finally see the Doctor within him.

Ejigantor

I really like this episode - and it's sort of a Doctor light episode; he's present throughout, but only physically there at the end, and I won't say this is better than Blink, but I like it about as much, as Doctor light episodes go. The effects are so cool, the concept of the monsters is great, and it's a really good *scary* episode; even with the mummy killing people in the previous episode, it wasn't scary. And there's nothing wrong with taking time to warm up to this Doctor, moreso than any of the prior ones, really. Even when you love someone, that doesn't mean you have to love everything they do all the time, and even when you don't love how they're being right now doesn't mean you don't love them.

John

Love that we're seeing the Doctor we've always known is still in there. Tons of baggage along for the ride, but he is still the Doctor. We're seeing the Doctor call people by these nicknames while acknowledging he knows their actual name. I think it's so he can keep people at arm's length and not form connections. He's still afraid of losing people and afraid of opening himself up to people.

John

Please don't ever feel like you've failed us for not immediately loving Capaldi's Doctor. Yes, he's MY Doctor, but I had to go through the turmoil of this season to get there as well. And if he's not your favorite, that's OK, always and completely OK.

John

Local Knowledge is my favorite "NPC" in an episode. It would be so easy to add a disposable character in that role and still serve the story, they really fleshed him out well in just 1 episode. Great character.

Carl Wilson

This is my favourite episode this season - partly because there was a sci-fi book I loved when I was a kid about different literally dimensional planes that made me love that kind of concept - and yes, where we can start really warming up to Peter Capaldi. So glad you felt that way too.

Carl Wilson

Remember that TARDIS stands for "Time and Relative Dimension in Space" - so I assume the 2-D creatures were draining away/messing up whatever energy it uses to maintain its relative-dimensional paradox (being bigger on the inside!), and then its defensive mechanisms went into overdrive and drained it further with the Siege Mode. Now, if you think about that too much of course it doesn't make any sense, but that's usually the case with science on Doctor Who. It's enough to make the story work and pretend it's not basically magic.

Carl Wilson

YES! That was even more annoying than the lying!

Fr. Brench

Oh, my friend, you don't need to apologize to us! To a large extent, the 12th Doctor wasn't meant to be likeable at first... by design he and the audience have been rediscovering who he is throughout this season. How long it takes to click with him is different for everyone, and it's lovely to see that beginning to fall into place with you. As for Clara, I felt much the same as you... she was an intriguing character in season 7b, but here she just gets a bit aggravating after a while.

Woodrow Petrovic

This is still 2 episodes before I was okay with him. I'm glad you got there sooner.

MaxValPlatt

His speech in the very last episode motivated you, I suppose?

Zachary Dastoor

SOMEONE VET THIS POST BEFORE ANGELA READS IT FULLY ANGELA DON'T READ FURTHER UNTIL SOMEONE SAYS IT'S OKAY I don't want to accidentally spoil something, I'm just posting based on information established up to this point. For the record, it's a small detail that isn't really brought up often, but it's been mentioned a few times up to this point and I think I remember one point when it was mentioned very briefly, almost in passing, and you may have missed it due to commentary, so I'll just remind you here. When Clara first called the doctor for IT support when she met Matts doctor(When people were being uploaded from the strange wifi connections), she got the phone number from a lady in a shop. The most recent mention of it before this episode comes with timing that, along with the comments from this episode from Missy, suggest that Missy was the lady in the shop who first gave the number to her to begin with so she could call the doctor which started all of this with her. I could be 100% wrong about this, and I don't know if it's confirmed later at any point or not, but that's where my thoughts lead from all the information up to this point.

Captain Painway

There have been two things I've been wanting to say as I've spent the last week catching up, as you've struggled with this incarnation of the doctor. 1) This is the biggest change between doctors we've yet had, both in age and in personality, so it is the hardest adjustment. 2) I read once that someone equated the incarnations of the newer Doctor to be basically the stages of grief (though none are absolutes, and they all exhibit some of each stage): - 9 was denial. He acted like the Time War never happened and didn't talk about it. He just carried on, put on a happy face with that big grin that went to his ears (my spouse does the same thing) - 10 was anger. He was the Doctor of "no second chances", and going too far (like in Donna's first episode). - 11 was Bargaining: 11 always looked for the ways for everyone to live, for everything to turn out good for; for ways to reverse fate and overcome fixed points. Hell, 11 came back from being wiped out of existence through a loophole at the Pond wedding. - 12 is Depression: This is the first incarnation to always have full knowledge of what happened to his people. He's cross with his people and with the universe (right up to his eyebrows!), he's detached and uncaring, or at least trying damn hard to seem to be. He's cocooning and protecting himself in his sadness and his loneliness, and Clara, the first face that face saw (I know that's an 11 line), is the only one he lets in, he lets "care" As for not liking Clara. I get not liking her actions, especially the lying to Danny once he knows about the TARDIS, but I think part of the general unease with Clara for many is also that she is the least servile companion yet in any incarnation of the Doctor. She has, over time, become more and more of not just an active participant, but an instigator of things. Hell, she handles the controls of the TARDIS! She also does things that the Doctor does, behaves like him in some ways this season; "Rule Number One, the Doctor lies!"

Mark Ten

The Tardis in siege mode looks like a tiny Pandorica. Cute

I think the thing we always need with a new Doctor is an episode that establishes "I am the Doctor" and this was Capaldi's. The one where the regeneration really finds themselves. 11's was his first episode with the Atraxi and he steps through Tennant's face. 10's with the Sycorax and the fight with their leader. 9's, well, he was just the Doctor to begin with. But I'd argue it was his first episode with him describing what he feels with the world turning, but also his murder of Cassandra in episode 2. This episode is so great for 12. He really did try. He wanted to find peace, give the Boneless a chance for co-habitation and survival. George survives to show us that even grumpy 12 is not nearly as awful as a human can be. I personally love Capaldi and his Doctor and I did since they announced he would take over for Matt Smith. I like that his character to this point has been on a slow burn and questioning his life's choices. But this, this felt like he was the Doctor again.
