Loved your reaction to this. This is a really thought provoking episode, and your making ties to Mengele were absolutely apropos. JMS isnt afraid of hitting sensitive topics and this one certainly is that. Its absolutely wonderful to see your theorycrafting in process and how it's evolving as you get deeper and deeper into the series. Star Watch note here. The Ambassador Kalica was Robin Curtis, known to many sci fi fans as Lt Saavik from Star Trek III and Sar Trek IV.

Yeah this is the "whats the moral thing to do with nazi science" episode, fairly common theme in scifi. Also the writer jms father was not a good person, nazi sympathizer, nazi memorabilia in the family home when he was a child. If certain things like uniforms give a nazi feel, it's done on purpose. Ww2 and fascist themes appear multiple times during the show, hope you know some history :) b5 council very much like the UN where the founding security councils get a veto, and the small countries have to put up with it.

As a long Doctor Who fan, I keep noticing that Kosh's exosuit looks very similar to Time lord's ceremonial garments. And pretty similar general attitude towards "inferior"/"primitive" races.....

Kinoko

My favorite thing about this episode is Talia just shows up at "the hour of Scampering" as if its no big deal :)

And Deathwalker was the Kryptonian Ursula from Superman II.

Another great reaction. Definitely a second watch episode. There is plenty of information in this episode to go in your notebooks. Way back when you started Farscape, you raised the possibility of covering Babylon 5 one day. I was fairly sure this show would grab you, and I am glad to see I was right.

This is perhaps the perfect show for encouraging WILD SPECULATION because sometimes you're not right, and sometimes you are - INSANELY - CORRECT AFTER ALL! Engage in theories! Just don't be upset if it turns out The Great Maker, JMS, was more clever than you. Because I watched these as they were first being broadcast, and he led THE WHOLE PLANET down red-herring wild-goose-chases for YEARS. Yes: Deathwalker's uniform was meant to be VERY evocative of the Nazis. The Mengele comparison is spot-on. And you are also correct - as evil as the whole equation is ("for one to live, another must die") - there are some people who would sacrifice their enemies to make themselves immortal (perhaps the Narn and the Centauri? The anti-alien Humans and...everyone else?) Why did the Vorlons do this? Why do they do ANYTHING?! (Be prepared to wait, sometimes YEARS, to answers to any questions involving the Vorlons.) And the B-plot of Talia and Abbut and Kosh...The Vorlon answer is the only answer ("Why do they do anything?" - well, wait a while, and you might find out.)

Good reaction. Season 1 does so much to lay foundations, set traps, foreshadow, put pieces in place and generally mess with the viewer. What makes it so amazing it that there are wonderful episodes like this all throughout. JMS was not afraid to touch on difficult and controversial topics. I sometimes measure the episodes by the amount of discussion that comes from watching. It's amazing how political, 'woke', and prescient this show was/is. 35 years later and the topics still resonate. Last, yes, the Vorlons are the most advanced of the races on B5. That is why his arrival in the pilot episode was such a big deal. He gets more out of his screen time than anyone.

In this eps, I always get goose bumps when the Vorlon roll up and say nope...NOT TODAY. Funny to think about it, but the Vorlon's motivation verse the leagues reasons for wanting her dead are very different. Probably some deeper meaning about actions, motivations and the results having different connotation depending on who you ask. Great reaction for a great episode.

Peter Powis

Love that the Vorlon solved the problem, no heated discussions - just smoked her and problem solved. End of!! Awesome! and I love Kosh, just saying!

Buck Rogers

Abbut was supposed to have been played by Gilbert Gottfried, and it really, really bothers me that he wasn't

This is a great sci fi reflects real world morality episode. It doesn't necessarily play in to the larger story but it's still good and makes you think. Kosh swooping in and ending the debate was great. Generally speaking, the aliens on Babylon 5 are some of my absolute favorites in sci fi.

Roy Graham

We got a lot in the last episode. But those answers only beg more questions! Yep. You hit on her inspiration, Mengele. One of histories most contemptable villains. The Vorlons get a pass because everyone is terrified of them. The council was meant to be the UN. That's... kinda how it works for us. It's not perfect but it's something. Nah... overthink. Overthink all you want. This show wants you to poke at it. Plus we're not gonna give you any confirmations so thinking is what you've got.

DoktorEvil

Major Josef Mengele and Unit 731 vibes from Deathwalker. And Sarah Douglas really brought it for this episode... really loved her as Ursa in Superman II. She's terrifying. And yeah, the Dilgar were basically space fascists, the uniform was entirely intentional. What's scary is how close the other races are to going down the same road, "for the greater good." Minbari honor is... complicated. I'll leave it at that for now. And yes, the Non-Aligned Worlds do get screwed a lot... the vibe is basically B5 Council are basically the UN Security Council vs the rest of the UN Nations. Gotta love that Vorlon Mic Drop at the end, too...

DH

I love Kosh, he has some of the best quotes ! "Ah! You seek meaning? Then listen to the music, not the song"

Paul Hess

We hate Deathwalker not only for the evil in her heart, but because we are just a thin membrane away from being just like her. Every race wanted her serum. Every race would have been stripped of their moral pretenses as they found ways to mass produce the death needed to make it work. We feel good and just that she was killed because we don't have to face that we are looking in a mirror of who we could be. What makes us noble is not that we (or any other race) are not selfish and thoughtless and raw, what makes us noble is that we can rise above it and form communities and care about each other. If we can't admit the risk we are doomed to become it. There but for the grace of god go I.

Just in case you are wondering and not getting it - the Babylon 5 Assembly is sort of modelled after the United Nations where the UN Security Council (the USA, UK, France, China and Russia) have veto powers over any substantitive proposal they want. It's not one-to-one since the way the UN works is that every country gets a vote but any memeber of the security council can veto any vote whereas in Babylon 5 the idea is that each member of the council has one vote and the entire rest of the assembly has one vote combined. But it's representing that concept of a league of nations where 5 of the members have way more power than all the others.

Dinker

Some interesting ideas about the Vorlons you have there. The League of Non-Aligned Worlds are like worlds where the alien species only have three planets or less. We know about the the Centauri Republic, and obviously the Minbari are a big deal. Maybe the reason the Narn are so big on B5 is because they helped out by selling weapons to the Humans? They do seem to want to be political players. The League are basically the small fry of Space UN, non-permanent member seats. They cast tie breaker votes but that's just because they barely have embassies and won't spend money on B5. (Or so we're told.)

Mark Ten

Kind of disappointing that they didnt get to Na'Toth after Deathwalker was killed.
